Writing Linear Equations Notes

The document provides examples of writing linear equations in slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and using tables to represent word problems. It explains that the slope (m) represents a rate, such as dollars per hour or items per person. The y-intercept (b) represents a flat fee or constant amount. It gives examples of writing equations for situations involving rates and flat fees, such as a yard service that charges a flat fee plus a fee per hour worked.

Writing Linear Equations

Example:
Given Write the equation of a line if the slope is -4 and the
Slope (Slope-Intercept Form) y-intercept is 5.

& 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏
Y-Intercept
Example:
Given Write an equation of a line that passes through the
(Point-Slope Form) give point and has the given slope: (3,-1) slope -2.
Slope 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
&a
Point
𝑦 𝑦 Example:
𝑚 =( )−( ) Write an equation of a line that passes through the
𝑥 𝑥 following points: (4,2) and (3,6).

Given
2 Points (Point-Slope Form)
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )

Example:
James was given 200 hours of community service to
complete. At this rate, how many days will it take for
him to have 158 hours left?
𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏

Writing Linear Equations:
Word Problems
What to look for…
1. A Rate. The rate will be your slope (m) in the equation. The following are examples of a
rate:
 $3 per day
 $10 per hour
 $5 per person
 $6 a minute
*This number is always multiplied by your x-value.
Per is a key word that is often associated with slope.
2. A Flat Rate or Fee. This fee is your y-intercept (b). This value is a constant. It never
changes!

Examples:
A yard service charges a flat fee of $20 to come mow A boat rental company charges a $30 fee to rent a
your yard and an additional $5 per hour that it takes boat plus an hourly rate for the number of hours
them to mow it. Write an equation to represent this you use it. If the total bill for your 2-hour trip was
situation. $44, write an equation to represent the hourly rate.
