Metre and Time Signatures

This document discusses time signatures and beat patterns in music. It explains that time signatures indicate the number and value of beats in each bar, with the top number showing how many beats and the bottom number representing the note value of each beat. Simple duple time has two beats per bar, simple triple has three beats, and simple quadruple has four beats. Examples are given of common time signatures like 4/4 and 3/4 and their meaning is explained. Readers are then asked to practice identifying time signatures and applying beat patterns.

Metre and Time Signatures

Simple Duple – Simple Triple – Simple Quadruple
Music falls naturally into repeating patterns of strong and weak beats.

Notes and rests are written in bars to show these patterns.

Barlines are thin straight lines drawn across the staff dividing it into bars. To show the end of a piece of music a
double bar line, one thin and one thick line, is used.

A time signature is two numbers, one on top of the other, written at the beginning of the stave to show the
number and value of beats in each bar which follows.

The top number of a time signature shows the number

of beats in each bar

The bottom number represents the type of note given

to each beat (expressed as a fraction of a semibreve)
