Surveying Model Question

This document contains a model exam for the subject CE 207 Surveying. It has three parts with multiple choice and numerical answer questions. Part A contains two 5-mark questions about EDM measurement principles and total station advantages. Part B and C contain two 10-mark questions each about surveying concepts like angle measurements, error calculations, area calculations, traversing, and reduced level determination. Students must choose one question from Part B and C to answer in the 1.5 hour exam.

MODEL EXAM - November 2018

Subject : CE 207 Surveying
B Tech S3 CE Time: 1.5 Hr.
Max. Marks 50

Part A (Answer all questions)

1. Explain the principle behind EDM measurement. (5 marks)
2. List the advantages of using Total station. (5 marks)

Part B (Answer any one question)

3. a) Explain any five laws of weights established from the method of least squares.
(10 marks)
b) The following are the mean values observed in the measurement of three angles A, B
and C at one station A=86º42’46.2’’ – weight 4
A+B=134º36’33.6’’ – weight 3
A+B+C = 262º 18’ 10.4’’ – weight 1
B+C = 185º 35’ 24.8’’ – weight 2
Calculate the most probable value of A, B and C. (10 marks)

OR

4. a) How will you determine the probable error of computed quantities. (10 marks)
b) The following are the mean values observed in the measurement of three angles A, B
and C at one station A = 76º 42’ 46.2’’ – weight 4
A+B = 134º 36’32.6’’ – weight 3
B+C = 185º 35’ 24.8’’ – weight 2
A+B+C = 262º 18’ 10.4’’ – weight 1
Calculate the most probable value of A, B and C. (10 marks)

Part C (Answer any one question)

5. a) In measuring angles from a triangulation station B, it was found necessary to set the
instrument at a satellite station S, due south of the main station B and at a distance of
12.2m from it. The line BS approximately bisects the exterior angle ABC. The angles
ASB and BSC were observed to be 30º 20’ 30’’ and 29º 45’ 6’’ respectively. When the
station B was observed, the angles CAB and ACB were observed to be 59º 18’ 26’’ and
60º 26’ 12’’ respectively. The side AC was computed to be 4248.5 m from the adjacent
triangle. Determine the correct value of angle ABC. (10 marks)
b) The following readings were taken with a dumpy level and a 4m levelling staff on a
continuously sloping ground at 30m interval
0.685, 1.455, 1.850, 2.330, 2.885, 3.380, 1.055, 1.860, 2.265, 3.540, 0.835, 0.945, 1.530
and 2.250. The reduced level of first point is 80.750. Rule out a page of a level book and
enter the above readings. Determine RL of all points using height of instrument method.
(10 marks)

OR

6. a) The following perpendicular offsets were taken at 10m interval from a survey line AB to an
irregular boundary line :
2.50, 3.80, 4.33, 6.76, 5.30, 7.25, 8.95, 8.25 and 5.50.
Calculate the area in sqm, enclosed between the survey line, the irregular boundary, the first and
last offsets by
i) Simpsons rule and ii) trapezoidal rule . (10 marks)

b) The bearings observed in traversing with a compass at a place where local attraction
was suspected are given below :
Line Fore Bearing Back Bearing
AB S 45º 30’ E N 45º 30’ W
BC S 60º00’E N 60º 40’ W
CD N3º 20’ E S 5º 30’ W
DA S85º 0’ W N 83º 30’ E
At what station do you suspect local attraction? Find the corrected bearings of the lines.
(10 marks)
