The READING SUBTEST CONSISTS OF 2 PARTS

o Part A – Scan reading


 15 minutes
 33% of total score

o Part B – Multiple choice


 45 minutes for 2 texts
 66% of total score

o Total of 60 minutes

What is/ are the skill/s required to score a “B” on the reading test?

 Skimming (Part A)
 Scanning (Part A)

 Reading for the main point (Part B)


 Reading for opinion/ attitude (Part B)

Prior to the reading test:


1. Read from a variety of different texts from a variety of different sources
Ex.: Case studies, journals, etc.
NO TO TABLOID NEWSPAPERS!!!
2. Don’t use the dictionary as you read.
3. Don’t just rely on practice tests materials
4. Set yourself a time limit when you read

Part A
 A ‘summary completion’ task
 Given a summary of four short texts with GAPS
 Assess the ability to source information from multiple texts, to synthesize information
 To read 3-4 short texts (approx. 650 words)
 No need to read all the texts entirely – NO ENOUGH TIME!

TIPS for Reading Part A


 Quickly scan the 3-4 texts (10-15 seconds)
 After that, read the summary first then search the texts for the answers
 Manage time, skip questions you can’t find answers for
 Ensure the meaning and grammar if your answer fits
 Don’t get frustrated if you start off slowly

 Skim/ Scan read texts when studying, don’t just read for detail.
o To answer, pick up IMPORTANT WORDS/ PHRASES ONLY
 Create opportunities for “incidental reading”
o Ex.: Googling/ Surfing the internet, Scrolling the newsfeed in FB/ Social media, Menus &
Timetables
o Do it in ENGLISH as much as possible 
 Any non-OET fill task can help you practice
o Look at the words next to the gap
o Predicting the next word

Summary of Passages:
Passage 1: Pre-term infant and how she survived
Passage 2: Research findings on the causes of pre-term birth
Passage 3: 2010 report showing drop in USA pre-term death

 Time your answers, 2-3 minutes to scan and skim the texts, 10-12 minutes to complete the
answers, 1 minute to check the answers
 You CANNOT go back to Part A once you move on to Part B

Part B
 Ability to read and understand comprehensive texts on health-related topics similar to those in
academic or professional journals
 2 passages (600-800 words each) and answer multiple choice questions (16-20 items)

TIPS for Reading Part B


 Manage your time (20 minutes for the first text)
 Ensure your choice answers the question
 Save yourself some time to double check your answers
 Keep track of the overall meaning of the text as you read
 Read at a meaning level, not just a word level
 Pause at the end of each paragraph
o What’s the main point?
o What does the writer want to achieve?
 At the end of a text, ask:
o What’s the line of argument?
o What’s the writer’s opinion?
 Don’t feel the need to know every word
 Build a vocabulary list:
o Study words that aren’t unique to that medical topic
o Limit yourself to 6-8 new words to study per day
 Boosting your ability to understand a text without knowing every word is just as important as
building the vocabulary

 All of the above/ None of the above questions

IMPORTANT!
 Part A – write answers in numbered boxes at the right of the summart text
 Part B – write answers on the answer sheet with PENCIL
 No extra time given at the end of the sub-test to check answers
 Abbreviations are NOT accepted, unless it appears in the text
 Wrong spelling is WRONG
 American/ British spelling variations are accepted.
