Assignment Unit Hydrograph

1. Derive the six-hour unit hydrograph from streamflow and rainfall data for a 216 km2 watershed, assuming constant abstraction and baseflow of 20 m3/s. 2. Use the derived six-hour unit hydrograph to calculate the streamflow hydrograph from a 12-hour storm with 2 cm rainfall in the first six hours and 3 cm in the second six hours, assuming a baseflow of 30 m3/s. 3. Determine the runoff and watershed area from a given one-hour unit hydrograph and storm pattern, assuming a constant abstraction rate of 0.76 cm/hr.

Assignment

Unit Hydrograph

1. Derive by deconvolution the six-hour unit hydrograph (6-hr UH) from the
following data for a watershed having a drainage area of 216 km2, assuming a constant
rainfall abstraction rate (phi-index) and a constant baseflow, QB = 20 m3/s.

Time Rainfall, i Streamflow , QT

(hr) (cm/hr) (m3/s)
6 1.50 26
12 3.50 71
18 2.50 174
24 1.50 226
30 173
36 99
42 49
48 33
54 26
60 22
66 21

2. Use the unit hydrograph developed in Problem 1 to calculate the streamflow

hydrograph (QT) from a 12-hr duration storm having 2 cm of rainfall excess in the first
six hours and 3 cm in the second six hours. Assume a constant baseflow rate, QB = 30
m3/s.

3. The one-hour unit hydrograph for a watershed is given below. The

abstractions have a constant rate (phi-index) of 0.76 cm/hr. Determine the runoff from
this watershed for the storm pattern given. What is the area of the watershed?

Time Rainfall, i Unit Hydrograph (UH)

(hr) (cm/hr) (m3/s per cm)

1 1.27 0.11
2 2.54 1.12
3 3.81 2.23
4 1.27 1.67
5 1.12
6 0.56
