Werner Herzog called out ‘Mandalorian’ crew for almost replacing Baby Yoda puppet with CGI: “You are cowards”

The iconic director didn't hold back when discussing the infant puppet

Iconic director/actor/producer Werner Herzog called out the crew of The Mandalorian for almost replacing the show’s Baby Yoda puppet with CGI, it is being reported.

Herzog, who stars in the Star Wars spin-off series as The Client, an antagonist figure who has wicked plans in store for Baby Yoda, admitted earlier this month that the sight of the puppet on set brought him to tears. “I have seen it on the set. And it’s heartbreaking! It’s heartbreakingly beautiful,” he told Variety.

It has now been revealed that Herzog got upset upon learning that a CGI version of the puppet he loved so much was being considered for the show.

Vanity Fair reporter Anthony Breznican writes that at a recent screening of the Disney+ series co-writer and co-director Dave Filoni shared that after a take using the puppet, the crew got ready for another take without the puppet “in case they decided during postproduction that the puppet wasn’t convincing enough and a digital version had to be substituted.”

Herzog reacted by saying: “You are cowards. Leave it.”

Describing Baby Yoda in detail, Herzog revealed that two technicians operate the puppet on set. “One was for the eyes and the mouth and the other one was for other facial expressions,” he said. “It’s a phenomenal technological achievement but, beyond the technological achievement, it’s heartbreaking.”
