Former New Jersey Devils center Jim Dowd cut by Flyers

Brick native Jim Dowd, celebrating here after scoring a goal for Philadelphia in the playoffs this spring, was cut by the Flyers Friday.

Jim Dowd, the Brick native who attended the Philadelphia Flyers' training camp on a tryout contract, was cut by the team Saturday morning.

General manager Paul Holmgren said the Flyers had cut the 39-year-old Dowd and defenseman Bryan Berard.

It is likely that Dowd, who played last season for the Flyers after the Devils decided not to sign him, will retire. He would've been the seventh-oldest active player in the NHL this season. In one preseason game for the Flyers, Dowd was scoreless and minus-1.

Berard, 31, played in four preseason games and had three assists and four penalty minutes.
