Sales of the all-electric Ioniq 5 SUV spiked in October, spurring record sales for Hyundai in the U.S. Electrek reported on the model's impressive figures in October, with the 4,498 vehicles sold representing a 51% year-over-year increase. The WSJ editor needs more research and perspective on the Ford Lightening ⚡ Q: why wasn't Ford working on this in 2000 or in 1990 when GM had the HyWire - which is the father of the whole battery 'skateboard' design, now 'obvious' and standard? Only corruption. Engineering may be part, with battery energy density coming up to speed with the LiMnC batteries used in the EV-1, well loved and marketed, going from 40 mile range to 100 mile range - which is where the 'powers that be' were ordered to 'pull the plug' and lawsuits were filed by the oil companies to Warp / alter California's ability to manage their Clean Air Act CARB (California Air review board) standards. Such a pivotal intervention!! After a 14 year lag... China decides to step into the vacuum, as they had battery and tech resources, and could never compete with the global OEMs on combustion (ICE) cars. Registrations of Tesla cars in California fell 24% in the second quarter, signaling mounting challenges for the electric-vehicle maker, according to a report by the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA). High interest rates and stiff competition has led to subdued demand for electric vehicles as consumers opt for less expensive hybrid cars. The Elon Musk-led electric vehicle maker's Model Y crossover continues to be the best-selling model in the state, but the automaker's market share in the first half of the year fell to 53.4% from 64.6% in the corresponding year-ago period. Cadillac is exploring how it could further elevate custom vehicle designs with the Sollei, an electric concept that it calls its 'ode to the sun.' With the Celestiq electric sedan, Cadillac aimed to create bespoke, ultraluxury vehicles that reflected individual owners' personal tastes and could rival brands such as Rolls-Royce. Now, Cadillac is exploring how it could further elevate custom vehicle designs with the Sollei, an electric four-seat convertible concept. The Sollei — a name chosen for its nods to both the sun and leisure — is a styling study that Cadillac said represents "the ultimate design expression of a coach-built luxury electric convertible." The Celestiq, as well as limited editions of other models, such as Blackwing performance variants, have opened up opportunities to explore how "one-of-one" curated vehicles could expand across the brand's lineup, said John Roth, vice president of global Cadillac. "Where can we go to really continue to propel Cadillac forward, continue to appeal to a broader luxury audience, and really achieve that Tier 1 status that we've been looking for as part of the overall vision plan with the brand?" Roth told reporters at Cadillac House at Vanderbilt, the brand's Celestiq customization center at General Motors' Global Technical Center in Warren, Mich., where the Sollei was revealed. Roth told Automotive News in February that Cadillac is working to improve its position as a top luxury brand with enhanced products, more global markets and a high-end customer experience at dealerships. "We're our best when we're innovating in the marketplace," he said. "And when you do a concept vehicle like Sollei, you're showing the innovation that our best designers and engineers can bring to the marketplace, in collaboration with a client who's pretty discerning." There are no plans to bring the Sollei to production, Roth said, but it's possible that elements of the concept will show up in future production vehicles. Cadillac plans to showcase the Sollei at Monterey Car Week in California in August. Cadillac House, where the Sollei was revealed, was converted into a design center for the Celestiq, where buyers can work with concierges to customize their vehicles. The Celestiq starts around $340,000 not including shipping, and no two vehicles are expected to be alike. Sales of the Celestiq have not yet begun, but Roth said deliveries are expected before the end of the year. About "99 percent" of customer-commissioned Celestiqs are in the design phase, he said, and the length of that process depends on the level of personalization from each buyer.

Hyundai Motor also distinguished itself with a remarkable 10% increase for the fourth quarter, benefiting from robust sales of its electric and hybrid models. While the shift to electric vehicles is underway, it’s progressing at a slower pace than many industry leaders anticipated. Compounding this issue, President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal for steep import tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico poses a threat to the industry, putting affordable new cars at risk of significant price hikes. Even as electric vehicles grow in market share, conventional hybrids have made the most substantial gains in 2024, as reported by Cox Automotive. Hybrid models like the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic leverage small batteries to enhance fuel efficiency without demanding motorists to change their driving habits. This makes them an attractive choice for consumers seeking both economy and convenience. Toyota, the frontrunner in hybrid technology, revealed that U.S. sales of hybrids and electric vehicles soared by over 50% last year, now comprising 43% of its total sales. Additionally, Mazda’s 16% sales increase underscores the success of its strategic shift toward remodeling dealerships and targeting the upscale SUV market.
