About us
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), founded in 1961, is one of the World’s largest scientific organisations. It encourages international co-operation and participation in the earth sciences in relation to human welfare and is a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU). Membership is open to countries or defined regions. IUGS has over 120 members representing over a million geoscientists. IUGS works through topic specific Commissions, Task Groups, and Initiatives as well as Joint Programmes with other organisations. INTERNATIONAL GEOLOGICAL CONGRESS (IGC) First held in 1878, the quadrennial IGC is now a premier event of the earth science calendar covering the whole span of geosciences. The IUGS has been involved in its organisation since 1961 and is now responsible for the Congress. Future venues for the IGC include Dehli, India (2020) and Busan, South Korea (2024). INTERNATIONAL GEOSCIENCE PROGRAM (IGCP) Since 1972, this flagship UNESCO/IUGS program has provided support that has enabled geoscientists separated by economic and political barriers to collaborate on research and outreach projects worldwide. EPISODES IUGS’ s quarterly journal provides news on developments in the geosciences of regional and global importance and original scientific research papers. Current and back issues can be read free of charge at their website or at the IUGS website. Contacts The IUGS Secretariat is located in Beijing, China and is financially supported by the Government of China and the IUGS. All the matters concerning IUGS may be directed to the IUGS Secretariat or the IUGS Secretary General. NOTE: the IUGS Secretariat moved to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing on 1st December 2012. The INTERNATIONAL UNION OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES is a 501 c (3) non-profit organisation registered in the USA.

On November 9, 2024, the dedication ceremony for the Barremian Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) took place at Río Argos, near Caravaca de la Cruz in Southeast Spain. This GSSP, a "golden spike" that officially defines the base of the Barremian Stage in Earth's timeline, marks the appearance of the ammonite Taveraidiscus hugii 125.77 million years ago! 🌀 The event brought together key figures in geology, including members of the International Subcommission on Cretaceous Stratigraphy (ISCS), the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), and local leaders, alongside geologists and residents passionate about the region’s rich geological heritage. Stay tuned for more on how this landmark connects Earth's history to our present! 📍 Location: Río Argos, Caravaca de la Cruz, Spain 📜 Ratified by IUGS in March 2023 #EarthHistory #Geology #GSSP #Cretaceous #Barremian #GoldenSpike

🟢 Supporting Europe’s Strategic Vision for Geological Resources IUGS is actively engaged in the development of the @European Geological Surveys’ (EGS) Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), contributing to its final content and direction. The SRIA establishes a comprehensive framework aimed at the sustainable use of Europe’s geological resources. This initiative focuses on setting goals, priorities, and actions that support the energy transition and bolster European competitiveness. Centered on geoscientific data and knowledge of Europe’s subsurface, the SRIA addresses critical challenges such as climate change, energy security, and resource sustainability. Through research, innovation, and collaboration, the SRIA lays the groundwork for a Geological Service for Europe (GSE)—a data-driven, sustainable resource to provide essential insights for policymakers, industries, and citizens. IUGS Vice President Marko Komac participated in a two-day workshop in Brussels on October 16th and 17th to advance this effort.

New Blog Post! The Gulf of Oman harbors a critical environmental concern: the world’s largest hypoxic zone. This low-oxygen area, harmful to marine life, results from rising sea temperatures, altered hydrology, and nutrient-rich runoff from agriculture. These conditions fuel algal blooms that decompose and consume oxygen, expanding a “dead zone” where life struggles to survive. 📊 Data shows alarming trends—higher nitrate levels and a significant drop in dissolved oxygen—posing a threat to marine biodiversity, fish stocks, and the livelihoods of coastal communities. This report underscores the urgent need for: 🔹 Climate action to slow warming seas, 🔹 Better management of agricultural runoff, and 🔹 Sustainable fishing practices to protect our oceans. 🌍 Let’s act together to preserve our marine ecosystems before it’s too late! #IUGS #GulfOfOman #ClimateAction #SustainableFishing #OceanConservation https://wix.to/8OC677I
