Legendary tennis player Billie Jean King received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, making her the first woman athlete with the honor. The new sports entertainment category previously honored former NFL players Michael Strahan and Carl Weathers, who went on to an acting career before his death in 2024. The addition of King’s star marks the first of what she hopes will be increasing recognition for women in sports. “I may be the first woman to be awarded a star in this category, but l'm certainly not going to be the last. Let's keep going for it!” she said in a recent post on X. King made history before and after her tennis career. She won 39 Grand Slam titles, co-founded the Women’s Tennis Association and, as a result of her advocacy, the U.S. Open became the first major tournament to offer equal prize money to men and women players. King is an International Tennis Hall of Fame recipient and remains the first woman athlete with a major sports venue named after her. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2009 for her work advancing gender and LGBTQ+ rights. ✍️: Sabreen Dawud, reporting fellow 📸: Chris Pizzello/AP
