‘Jerry’ Ties With Slowing ‘Michael’ at Box Office

Associated Press

“Michael” and “Jerry Maguire” tied for first place at the box office over the weekend, each with $12.5 million in ticket sales, according to industry estimates Sunday.

“Michael,” starring John Travolta as a seedy angel, was slumping, however. Its per-screen average has dropped by 28% in just two weeks. “Jerry Maguire,” a romantic comedy with Tom Cruise as a sports agent, appears to have more staying power: Its average take per screen has gone down only 11% after a month in release.

Next in the weekend tally came the new Wes Craven slasher film “Scream,” with a $10-million estimated gross, followed by “101 Dalmatians,” with an estimated $7.4 million. Final figures are expected today.
