VALLEY VIEW, Texas (KXII) - The Valley View Volunteer Fire Department said a malfunction was the reason a tornado siren did not warn residents of a tornado before it hit the town on Saturday.

In a statement on Facebook, the department said the malfunction was due to a wiring issue that has since been fixed.

After the siren failed to sound, the department sent out a message on social media advising people to take shelter immediately.

The department said the siren had not been tested in two months because of weather conditions at the scheduled time of regular tests.

The department noted that at best, the siren can be heard half a mile away, and it is too far away to warn the areas that were impacted by the tornado.

It serves as a reminder to always have more than one way to receive alerts during severe weather.
