I have to say I watched this movie with no preconceptions about what to expect. I saw the cast, saw the premise and it sounded like it could be amusing.
Not only had I never seen another Wain/Showalter film before, I had never heard of them. I did not read anything here about this movie first, so I believe the commentary below is based solely on my opinion on having viewed this film without regard to expectations or a formed opinion about the writer/director/whatever...
This movie was so bad I am pretty sure it gave me cancer.
I now see a lot of people share my opinion of this movie. Many influenced, perhaps unfairly, by other works from these two people. I am fairly certain that I am cerebral enough to understand the movie, I just find myself not wanting to. I understand that not every comedy has to conform itself to the general schlock seen on sitcoms, nor to Hollywood's formulaic approach to most romantic comedy's or frat house insanity. In fact, some movies that do not conform to this formula are often excellent examples of what can be done in movies (the recent movie 'Juno' is a good example).
I have to say that the short 'stories' had some relatively small amusements in them and that they did a fair overall job of maintain character consistency (the Jesus picture in the funeral home was the same 'Jesus' from the librarian story) which had some 'smirkable' moments. However, the stories themselves were not funny. Not remotely funny. They were boring, inane, uninteresting, mind numbing and ultimately damaged my brain.
I realize that this is a harsh review and I don't throw around the 'cancer' word lightly, but that word seems to fit the disease that is this movie. I recommend avoidance at all costs, even if you have seen everything else in the video store.
