The Cleaner: The Reunion (2024)
Season 3, Episode 1

The Reunion
18 October 2024
When Wicky arrives at a large home to clean up after a freak piano accident. He is surprised to discover that the owner is Justin an old school friend. He made it big in the world on investments and he was always regarded as the one to succeed the most.

Wicky originally mistook him for the car cleaner and his son as spoilt.

It leads to an impromptu school reunion, as Wicky phones a friend who has fallen on hard times to fix Justin's bannister. Later to be joined by a Pink impersonator and then someone who used to model himself on Robert Redford.

Only for Wicky to left feeling out of sorts by seeing his old schoolmates bonding. Having the sudden need to prove himself by attempting to shoplift.

It was a good mix of slightly surreal and bizarre. I did like how Wicky felt that most of them were losers. Justin just saw them as survivors.

A good start to the third series and some right amount of pathos.

Breakfast at Peabody's
15 October 2024
In an era where people would queue up for several days to be the first ones in during the Harrods sale. You could pick something costing thousands of pounds for just a few hundred.

Miss Milton has her eye on mink coat which has been slashed down to £50 at Peabody's department forthcoming sale.

Once Flora hears about she simply must get the coat for herself and dissuades Miss Milton that she will be trampled all over by the crowd.

Flora and Cissie decide to spend the night in the store, so they will be there first thing in the morning.

However the storeroom is no place to hide as the cleaners come around.

There is some fun to be had as the pair pretend to be dummies modelling hats. Apart from that it was a bit old hat.

Recipes for Love and Murder: Bereft Woman (2022)
Season 1, Episode 1

Bereft Woman
9 October 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Recipes for Love and Murder is based on novels of Sally Andrew.

Set in the small town of Eden. Maria Purvis (Maria Doyle Kennedy) is a food writer at the local newspaper. She likes her cooking but her column is at risk.

The editor wants an advice column and a reluctant Maria takes up the challenge. She gets a letter from Martine Burger who is suffering from domestic abuse from her husband, Dirk. He gaslights her and Martine also has a close relationship with another woman, Anna Pretorius.

When Martine turns up dead, the police arrest Anna. For Maria, the murder of Martine Burger leads her to probe what happened to her.

The first episode has scenic views of South Africa, not matched by some of the characters. I did like how the scenes flit between Maria reading the correspondence and Martine's life at the moment.

You know that Martine will soon turn up as the victim. Here is a slice of her life. By the end, you expect the main characters to set into action after Anna's arrest. There was a lot of set up but I felt some of it was unfocussed.

The Assistant
9 October 2024
Tony Hancock was in search of something new and different. So he hopped over to ITV and got different writers.

It is the same Hancock but in a slightly different setting. The opening titles has him hanging on a road, near a department store.

When he sees a mannequin undressing, Hancock is appalled and goes to give a piece of his mind to a hapless store assistant. She cries off to the manager Mr Stone (Patrick Cargill.)

It ends up with a challenge. Whether Hancock could work as an assistant in the department store for a week. If he can, then the money he owes in his account with the store will be wiped clean.

His first placement is with the erratic Owen Bowen in packaging. Later he goes on to become a children entertainer before he goes to toys and games.

Hancock things he has made a big sale at the football game. Alas Hancock realises that working in a department store is not that easy.

The bit with Owen Bowen was edgy who was played by Kenneth Griffith.

Gallant Journey
8 October 2024
Gallant Journey is a curious and not a very good biopic of an early aviation pioneer.

John Montgomery (Glenn Ford) was a man whose father wanted to enter the clergy. He had plans to fly gliders, only his health meant that flying gliders was dangerous. John suffered from dizzy spells.

Later John comes across Dan Mahoney. Another aviation enthusiast who launches the glider from a hot air balloon. Things seem to be going well until Dan crashes and dies.

Eventually John sells his possessions to keep going. Then ending up in a costly lawsuit.

All the while he still has the love from his girl Regina. As well as the support from several priests who share his enthusiasms about flight.

Director William Wellman has some good flying sequences. All too often this movie fails to soar and is never too life affirming. John is plagued with miserable luck.

Financial Difficulties
8 October 2024
Fliss is not happy. Her ancient washing machine has conked out. Chris does not want to buy a new one as he cannot afford it.

It is bad news for Christ. His mother in law has told Fliss to take away his conjugal rights until he has purchased a new washing machine.

The repair man tells Chris the old one cannot be mended. He contemplates borrowing money from Gavin as they chat at the launderette.

Gavin is more interested in trading in his Lotus. He has an eye on a De Tomaso Pantera. A fine looking sportscar.

Gavin's new motor could be Chris's salvation. Just what does the car dealer have to offer for each buyer.

The resolution was good but once again the episode never goes above average.

The Goodies: Hype Pressure (1976)

Hype Pressure
8 October 2024
Although made in 1976, there is a lot here that would fly in the present day.

Bill is struggling to come out with some hit songs. Graeme tells him that he used a computer to knock out the Funky Gibbon. Nowadays the computer will use AI.

Tim is a television producer who is impressed when Bill and Graeme sings some bad folk songs. He makes them take part in a television talent show called New Faeces. Nowadays it would be Pop Idol/The X Factor with the obligatory cruel judge. In fact Tim Brooke-Taylor hosted The Fame Game back in the mid 1980s where participants got hooked off by viewers voting from home.

Only the folk duo are a hit. There is a hark back to the 1950s rock n roll era. The good old days just like some folks do today on social media.

It is very much the typical Goodies scattergun approach. I did find there was some rude language here. Once again proving they were not a kids show.

It all ends with a parody of a Ken Russell film that seems to never end. Someone call a politician.

The Tyrees of Capitol Hill
8 October 2024
The Senate Page Program is geared for students to work at the Senate as well as continuing with their studies. They are sponsored by a Senator.

Boford Tyree is one of the fortunate few who has got on the Page program by the retiring Senator Guthrie (Lloyd Bridges.)

Boford has been accompanied his grandfather Andrew Jackson Tyree. Even though Pages are expected to live away from home with other students.

Only Andrew Jackson Tyree seems to get in the way. Walter Pike one of the tutors regards him as a hindrance.

As the grandfather has extensive knowledge of history, Senator Guthrie sees a way to have him hang around the nation's capital.

This is a light, almost inconsequential story. It might help if the viewer knew of the Page Program.

Van Helsing: Help Me (2016)

Help Me
8 October 2024
This Van Helsing is Vanessa Helsing (Kelly Overton) a descendant of the famous vampire slayer.

Set in the near future. Precisely in 2019, Vanessa wakes up under military guard in a hospital. She has no idea what has happened to her after waking up from a coma. Those guarding her do not have a clue why they are doing so.

All they know that Vanessa is a woman of importance. The world is infested by vampires but these ones act like zombies. Vanessa does not turn into a vampire after being bitten.

The pilot is grim and grimy. It also looks cheap and nasty being largely set in a hospital. It looks like a typical low budget SyFy stuff.

It just tread water until Vanessa woke up, then it became more interesting. That is not saying much though. This is a weak opener. The series managed to run for 5 years.

Scene 31A: Tecto Meets Ey
7 October 2024
With a creative team that includes Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci. HBO decides to mock the superhero franchise in this new series.

At least HBO know where to look given the quality of some of the DC Comic adaptations by Warner Brothers.

Daniel (Himesh Patel) is the hapless 1st AD. Tasked to bring the creative vision of arthouse director Eric (Daniel Brühl) who in charge of the sequel to a superhero franchise.

The problem is everyone is at odds with each other. From the production team to the actors such as the theatrical Peter (Richard E Grant.) At one point the head studio honcho turns up to cut scenes and the budget to the film.

When you have Marvel lampooning its own movies in Deadpool and Wolverine. You wonder if the Franchise can cut it.

What it got right was that you feel the atmosphere of a movie set. I just did not find it funny enough. Somehow the biting humour was missing.

Upstairs, Downstairs: For Love of Love (1972)

For Love of Love
7 October 2024
The first series of Upstairs Downstairs concludes with a wedding.

It is June, 1909 and the Bellamys are worried with Elizabeth gone missing. Rose knows where she is and secretly visits her.

The Bellamys eventually learn that Elizabeth is shacked up with some Fabians. At least they are intellectuals and thus one step up from socialists.

Elizabeth is keen on a bohemian lifestyle with poet Lawrence Kirbridge (Ian Ogilvy.) He manages to impress Richard and Lady Marjorie. After all he is another spoilt rich kid but has some talent as a poet. Maybe marriage should be on the cards between these two.

Meanwhile James Bellamy has hooked up again with Sarah who is now working in music hall with some success.

The episode looks to have an happy ending. From my vantage the relationship between Elizabeth and Lawrence looks doomed to me. It all felt plodding.

The most important aspect of the episode was the stern talk by Hudson to Rose. That she should not had secretly kept the news of Elizabeth from the Bellamys. It was cheeky of Elizabeth, to talk about the workers. When Rose visits herm she hands Rose her dirty washing to take back.

If the Frame Fits
7 October 2024
Jessica Fletcher goes to Connecticut to visit an old friend Lloyd Marcus (Norman Lloyd.)

The well heeled area of Cedar Heights and its country club is in turmoil at the moment. There has been a spate of art thefts.

During the next attempted theft, Lloyd's daughter Julia Granger is killed. Lloyd found the body and as he hates his son in law Donald Granger. He rearranged the crime scene to frame Donald, who he regards as only marrying his daughter for money.

Jessica figures out that Lloyd tried to frame his son in law. So the real killer is still out there. While Donald seems to be very close to his late wife's sister, Sabrina.

This was a campy episode, it was an era of Dallas and Dynasty. So the wealthy had lots of hidden secrets with many not working for a living.

In the end Jessica thinks that there had to be more than one culprit for the crimes.

Z Cars: Absence (1974)

Absence
7 October 2024
Harry Dance has been a long term informant for Bert Lynch. He has always proved to be reliable.

Now Harry informs Bert of a robbery at the bank. An audacious one with a souped up van with bars in the front to ram into the bank.

It sounds far fetched to some at the police station. A few doubting the reliability of Bert's snout.

Soon Harry disappears. He promised to give Bert more details of the robbery. Now Bert Lynch is worried that Harry has come to harm.

His wife does not seem that bothered. She seems busy getting driving lessons from another man. Later a body is found in the canal.

I found the episode was rather pedestrian. It did show Bert having genuine concern about his grass. In the end it really was a case of who can you trust.

The chase sequence livened it up a bit. I was rather puzzled why two policemen chase a souped up car by foot when they should had jumped in their panda cars.

Judgment Day
7 October 2024
Judgment Day, that maybe because there was a reference to the The Terminator. The series finale takes place in various timelines, as Dr Ben Song needs to save Addison Augustine from Leaper X.

The episode opens in the year 2051 as Ben meets future Ian in a nuclear winter.

Ben then goes back to 2018, the night he had his first date with Addison. He decides to tell her everything, that he has has come from the future to save her life.

Addison is disbelieving as it is the plot to the Terminator. All the while Leaper X is about but just whose body has he entered?

The fun was Ben revisiting his leaps in the first season. Some of the time travel conundrums were a big hokey. There was no big return from the original show but it all ended rather satisfactorily.

Shine on Harvey Moon: Goodnight Vienna (1984)

Goodnight Vienna
7 October 2024
Harvey Moon is a fast learner. In politics he manages to quote from some politicians and writers. Useful when he ends up serving wine at a political do for his boss, Dick Elliot.

At the office he uses his savvy to make peace with his senior clerk Ryder who clearly detests Harvey.

At home, he is getting cosy with Frieda. She is painting a portrait of him. The fly in the ointment is their relative Yossela who has come to stay with them from a camp in Palestine.

Yosella cannot get over the trauma he has endured. Always hungry, he steals food. He carries a knife and is jealous of Harvey's relationship with Frieda.

It soon becomes clear that Yosella cannot settle in London.

A rather glib treatment of some a psychological affected young lad. Then again if it was too heavy, it might not had suited the comedy drama part of the show.

This episode also introduces Pauline Quirke as Veronica. She is Maggie's friend and will become a series regular.

6 October 2024
There was a hidden intruder on the train. Joe has found him. In the chase, Arran Moy gets shot. The train guard Billy McCloud has something to hide. The intruder turns out to be a damp squib.

He is Caleb Mahmoud, an illegal immigrant that Billy got on the train. I was surprised why Caleb could not just buy a ticket.

Back at the National Cyber Security Centre, the pressure is on Abby Aysgarth. She is taken in for questioning. Her bosses suddenly think she is a liability. Maybe in league with hackers.

All of sudden Joe loses a valuable contact. Pev and others wonder just why would anyone want Abby out of the way.

From the sublime to the ridiculous all in one episode. That very much sums up Nightsleeper.

At one point you think Abby's boss has something to hide. That Abby has been framed. They you end up groaning at all the silliness going on in the train.

New York
6 October 2024
Phoebe Robinson is known as a comedy writer. Jessica Williams was a correspondent for the Daily Show.

Both got together to do a comedy podcast and they were picked up by HBO for a series of comedy specials in 2018.

2 Dope Queens in essence is a variety show format. Featuring both women doing stand up comedy and chatting to guests as well as introducing other comedians.

Tig Notaro directed the first four specials. The format is aiming to be easy going. It starts with both women talk about living in New York or not able to afford to live in the metropolis going by the size of their rooms.

They talk to Jon Stewart who tests pizza. That had a Letterman riff. Other comedians are introduced who did a short stand up routine.

Now it might be I am watching this six years after it was broadcast. By which time there was nothing too special about the opening show, nothing that was too funny. Even the guest comedians did not offer much more than average material.

Czech Mate
6 October 2024
Czech Mate is very much a espionage paranoia drama that were popular in the 1970s and 1980s.

Vicky Duncan (Susan George) is a journalist who has identified a high ranking soviet military general who keeps out of the limelight.

She has also been suddenly whisked off to Prague by her ex husband John Patrick Duncan (Patrick Mower) who wants her back.

As soon as they arrive in Prague, Vicky ends up in a kafkaesque nightmare. John has disappeared, he rushed off to a business meeting. Their passports have gone. She has no money.

Vicky goes to the British Embassy for help, she meets Roger Brown who promises to help. Later Vicky comes across a dead body, some strange men following her and the Czech police take her away for questioning.

It is not much a shock that her ex husband was using Vicky. He planned to use her passport to smuggle his new Czech girlfriend into the UK. She looks a bit like Vicky. Roger Brown knew this as he works for British intelligence.

John Patrick Duncan is being used, his new girlfriend is an east european spy. Brown wants her to get to the UK so the British authorities can track her.

Vicky is determined to stop all this but at what costs?

The story does not gel and is too uneven. Vicky is out of her league and she is meant to be a journalist. The story toys for a moment that Vicky was set up because of her investigation on the military general.

I really did not buy the ending. Did her colleagues not worry where Vicky got to?

An intriguing opening, the 30 minutes format makes it zip along. Whoever was guarding Barbara was careless.

Pat remains undeterred. Uncle Mort takes them all to where they all once lived during the war. Houses built to last, but they are now derelict.

I did like the shoddiness of new homes in the 1970s. I also liked camp Count Jugular the wrestler. Those old houses did not look so enticing though.

Frank Gorshin is having fun and puts on a great physical performance. The riddles make you groan. As the original comic strip featured the Joker. I did think this was more of a Joker story.
