Uglies (2024)
Excellent premise, dumb execution
Uglies has a great premise but the execution was missed by a loooooong shot. The idea that society not only wishes for conformity, but to erase individual identity is an easy one to find fault with when the execution is dumbed down for children. Yes, it's a YA thing, but why dumb it down this much?
The film does take off in the second half, but like the Divergent series, there's something missing that would elevate the movie to where it should have been.
Disappointed. I hope the author didn't have much input, otherwise I can't see how he would approve such a mediocre movie.
Missed its mark.
Dune: Part One (2021)
Thanks Villeneuve for ruining
Herbert's novel. A watered-down attempt at removing just about all connections of Islam/Islamic culture that Herbert meticulously researched prior to his inclusion into Dune. Villeneuve's movie is technically impressive, but there is no soul - his removal of the Islamic and ME culture whitewashed what could have been an amazing movie. Why? To present Islam as anything other than a backward way of life would shatter the "Western" world's view of the enemy.
I gave the movie 5 stars due to Chalamet's performance and the technical marvels included. The rest is lost because the movie does not do more than resemble a Marvel Universe blockbuster - fluff meant without substance. A GREAT pity - this could have been something wonderful!
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Now we know why DiMartino and K split...
The mish-mash of story arcs, the rush of the entire first book, and the injustice they have done to several characters is hugely problematic, Hugely problematic!!!. While I liked seeing Kiyoshi early on, is it not supposed to be Roku as the first line of communication in the Avatar world?? It's almost like the guys who took over threw everything into a bowl, closed their eyes, and started picking events and characters to place in random order. I have waited years for this and am sorely disappointed by the final result. We still have two books to get through - I can only wonder how they will manage to mess that up...
Curry & Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case (2023)
Soulless monster
It is vastly disturbing that not only was she getting the cyanide on the pretense of poisoning a poor stray dog (what type of monster harms an innocent animal?????!!!!!), but that she killed a 2-year-old child.
We have seen documentaries on serial killers and similar before - this is nothing new. Her motives not only shone a light on the apathetic monster she was but the meticulous way she constructed the "reality" around her to work in her favor.
My heart breaks when I hear news of animal and/or child abusers/killers. They are the most vulnerable in our society and we are not doing enough to protect either.
The Kardashians: You're a Witch and I Hate You (2023)
The fact that they're still on
Seriously shows the power of advertising, bullying (cris obviously) and poor taste. From Chloe's nitpicking on poor whales (seriously, you're such an a-hole... to pretend a phobia - lie much??!!) to the fake everything that's on their faces/bodies, "I'M UNCOMFORTABLE" watching such a useless bunch continously being thrown everywhere I look (thanks Cris Jenner for punting your daughter's s_x tape and pushing them into everyone's face...). So disappointed they're still around - whomever keeps upvoting, you don't have ANY taste holding these artificial bags up as mentors/icons.
P. S - none of them really "learn" anything except how to push for more money. They're as empty as the garbage they sell.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Guardian 3 highlights
Animal experimentation (vivisection) in a way that should get most, if not all people to understand how cruel and inhumane our actions are.
Yes, the film has plenty of laughs and we're delighted to see so many familiar faces, but viewers should hopefully take the animal experimentation scenes and understand what it means in real life - this happens every day to millions of animals around the world for the creation of cosmetics, medicine etc. It is unacceptable that we continue to pretend it doesn't exist when we are the only reason why it exists.
Guardians 3 is a wonderful movie with hidden depths.
Kocktails with Khloé (2016)
No more - I beg you!
Awful hostess despite an interesting roster of guests. Another attempt by the Kardashian-Jenner clan to stay relevant, but let's face it. They are self-centred creatures who cannot play interesting because their entire brand is based on shallow, artificial facades. If it weren't for the mother Kris Jenner constantly pimping her daughters out, they would have died out a long time ago.
One can only hope the young generation they're reeling in wakes up and realized that creations built on nothing but vacuous, shallow nothings can never contribute in a positive way when we need it most. The world does not need more Kardashian-styled shows/products/performances. We need true artists who are talented instead of a bunch of artificial beings whose only real stamp on the world is the amount of plastic surgery they have done...
Keeping Up with the Kardashians: Lions and Tigers and Texts (2015)
Those of us who pay attention
Knew that BJWT was set up to steal donations. It is a crying shame these Kardashians are so ignorant when they have access to all kinds of information and could have done their due diligence. I mean, WHAT THE HELL! But, I guess anything goes in the making of an episode, from them endorsing animal abuse to pretending they actually have panic attacks - they need to step into the real world and understand that their actions ACTIVELY hurts others.
It is pathetic that we as a society have propped such vain, shallow empty vessels up and worship them. We should be ashamed!
This series is worth zero stars.
The Happening (2008)
Wahlberg is not and will never be a good headliner
I seriously cannot believe people are still casting him. He has one resting face and when prodded to cry, he cannot even scrunch that up correctly to display some human emotion much less tears. He is like a walking robot (wooden) and trying to get him to play any sort of teacher is hilarious. The kid did a better job acting than he...
The script might have been a good idea had Shyamalan invested in good characters who can deliver what he is known for: mysterious, mind-melds that make you go "holy cr*p" in the end. Zoeey D is largely a comedian, she cannot be useful in a drama...
Missed opportunity in my opinion.
Harry & Meghan (2022)
Interesting how the media
Can influence the weak-minded and those looking to hate others simply due to personal dislike.
I don't feel either way toward the Sussexes but noticed that where the social media community is concerned, there are 2 primary parties: Fervent and ardent supporters of the royal family who are fully blind to the actual mechanism that keeps it running - this also comprises 99% of the communities harassing and creating hate on the Sussexes; and those who support the Sussexes.
What I found interesting is that Sussex supporters are called trolls when they defend the couple but the supporters of the British monarchy are "royalists"... Everyone has flaws, let's not pretend the Queen and her family are perfect. William is currently making the rounds again re: his purported affair with Rose Hanbury but supporters of the RF ignore that. Were the situations reversed and it were the younger brother, it would create more online waves directing more gate their way.
Yes, Meghan Markle takes the lead in the couple's relationship as is common where the woman is older. Women mature much faster than their male counterparts and she is at least a decade older than him mentally. Why does this bother so many people re: "controlling woman"...
Meghan and Diana's struggles are very similar in many ways. If the British royal family were as "in touch" with the current state of society as their supporters emphasize, they would have evolved. As it stands, they are a symbol of a former colonial power who has never personally apologised, a family who refuses to adapt and embrace the 21st century, and should anyone dare to suggest changes, those who emphasize royal protocol leak and manipulate the media.
It's good to view a documentary where they are actually doing the talking.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians: Doggy Blu's (2014)
Poor Blu
I feel really bad for the poor Great Dane who is stuck in the laundry room for hours on end until Kris Jenner wakes up in the morning. That is not only animal neglect and abuse but it shows you exactly how the Kardashians have recycled pets over the years. Kim's daughter North didn't look after her hamster or feed the poor creature apparently and the hamster died. Kim's Persian cat died, Dolce the Chihuahua was killed by a coyote... seriously, how often do coyotes pop up in gated communities.... This family should not have animals seeing that they and their assistants are not looking after them. Please just stop with the props. No one is impressed.
Ascendant (2021)
The young environmentalist
Idea with superpowers was great but the plot was poor, the villains were laughable and the movie didn't come together.
We have vague ideas about the Wolf family with twins who have superpowers. One twin seems good while the other has no empathy for humanity who hurts/destroys innocents (a-hole beating the dog), our ability to pollute without remorse and our greed that overrides our decency. I won't say the second twin is evil because she's not (I'd do the same if I saw someone beating an innocent animal!).
The father is being held by some Russian mob who have killed the mother and entrapped the daughter in a high speed elevator in Shanghai - with the intent of gaining information from the father through torturing him and the kid.
We see snippets from Aria's childhood with torture scenes dispersed throughout. I won't spoil the ending but the movie could have done alot more. The lead female is pretty good.
The God Committee (2021)
It will never be ok
Killing innocent animals for science. Studies have proven that 9/10 times the hundreds of millions of animals that have died for science, died for nothing.
The film is interesting and the dilemma is obvious - what strikes me most about the movie is that people care so little for others. We care about money, our looks, our reputation but we don't care that we exploit others-selfishly and unnecessarily.
Stiles and Grammer make an interesting couple. Domingo is an unexpected addition but adds flair to the overall cast.
This film really allows you to think about vivisection and it's obsolete nature in today's world.
The Kardashians: I Have Something to Tell You... (2022)
I cannot stress enough
How excessive and neurotic these characters are. The "anxiety" they apparently feel is used as a punchline. The "breakdown to get a breakthrough" was said by Oprah Kenny dear. The "mean" things said to these robotic individuals is due to them being totally disconnected from reality - when reality keeps knocking on their door!
The fact that they keep popping kids is another thing that irks me - the world is OVERPOPULATED as is, why are you reproducing like it's going out of style??!! The tone was set by the mother who pimped out her daughters - sure, they're obscenely wealthy but all the life lessons one should have learnt (being a decent person, having REAL compassion etc) is absent from these blank bodies floating around.
Finally, yes, Khloe is turning into a stick figure. Her insecurities couple by the constant surgeries going around via her family creates a need to constantly reflect on what she isn't.
Nothing about the show is real - all one can take away is that these are vacuous empties with no real contribution to society and the world at large (we will see where Kim's legal journey takes her...).
Monsters (2022)
When you dissect sentients without remorse...
What do you expect? Yes, I believe that ruthlessly killing sentients played a role in the evolvement of Dahmer's psychopathy. It has been noted through various studies that animals are often the first and most unfortunate victims of serial killers.
Evan Peters' portrayal of Dahmer was spotless. From the accent to the way he walked, spoke and more, Peters' brought Dahmer to life in a gruesome, cold, sociopathic way. While Dahmer's parents were fractured and highly flawed individuals, trying to blame his actions on them is somewhat illogical.
Supporting cast were amazing in their reactions to Peters.
Highly recommended!
The X Files: Fearful Symmetry (1995)
My heart broke
What a reminder of the ugly history of zoos, circuses and aquariums. I'm glad the x-files are covering issues like this - we need to be exposed to the reality of "entertainment" and realise that it's not entertaining, fun or humane for sentient creatures who deserve their freedom. Great episode!
The X Files: Red Museum (1994)
They got something right...
We know rBST is a dangerous hormone extensively used in animal agriculture. We know FDA approval is rubbish considering they've approved stuff like Aspartame - a known cancer-causing agent. We know that killing sentients for food in this day and age is simply wrong, and that tradition and culture must adapt and evolve to the current age and needs. The X-files may be almost 30 years old but once you get past the effects and get to the core of an episode like this, it sheds a great deal of light on what is happening in the world around us. Do we care? We should!
Chicago Med: Disorder (2016)
Dogs are HIGHLY predictable!
This is an interesting series however they get so many common issues wrong. The dog bite segment was completely out of line and highly sensationalised. Dogs are sentient, highly predictable creatures, creatures of habit that rely on routine and more. What makes Dr Manning's comments even more bizarre is that this wasn't a random dog but the woman's companion. In a real-life setting, the dog would likely have had an injury or been ill to bite her "out of the blue". It's stuff like this that give dogs a bad stereotype.
Magic Mike XXL (2015)
Absolute garbage
Why does Hollywood keep churning out trash?? Changing Tatum is a great dancer - let him start a dance school instead of subjecting us to utter torture! Not even worth the 1 * but they wouldn't let me post zero.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Really Campion, animal abuse in the 21st century!
Unacceptable that animals were abused in this movie. Go ahead Cumberbatch, method act all you want but the abuse of animals is wholly and absolutely unacceptable!
Movies that show human-on-human violence aren't real so why not figure a way around this instead of being brutal and inhumane? Absolutely disgusted. 1 star because I couldn't give 0.
And Just Like That...: Seeing the Light (2022)
Tried too hard... And failed.
The cringe in this series almost had me permanently afflicted! Granted the old series had some "WTF" moments and the movies were awful (yes, there is no polite way of getting around that), but I expected to feel curiosity at the very least.
What I found was an attempt to bring Carrie and the girls into the 21st century (proper) which failed on every account. Whether we're looking at Miranda's attempts to be "true" to her real self or Charlotte trying to micromanage every second of her family's life, we see real-life issues being dragged (kicking and screaming) into a 30-minute show that, for all intents and purposes, just seems a way for SJP and crew to continue earning nosh ($$$). There was no good reason to create 2 terrible movies and an even worse show after the original series ended (s6 was something of a disaster...). Why do this SJP? Why create something so bad, one cannot even classify it as mediocre?
The Mentalist (2008)
Review of S1E10 - No, animal testing is NOT acceptable
Regardless of your arguments. It is scientifically proven that 9/10 animal tests do NOT work meaning animals suffer mercilessly and without any hope of reprieve until death, which often does not arrive for many years. Where is our humanity? We exploit animals in the hopes of creating a morality engine?? Absolutely horrified by our reality and our lack of empathy for the voiceless.
This show is amazing and Baker does a fantastic job of a somewhat disconnected problem solver with a supporting cast that work well.
Rick Stein's Long Weekends: Cadiz (2016)
No Rick - Bullfighting is most assuredly NOT a sign
Of male macho behaviour... In fact, most of your shows have nothing to do with PC-attitude considering you focus on extremely unhealthy foods (animal products and by-products in EVERY meal) and worse, you pronounce them healthy! Eating fish does NOT imply health. Have you heard of mercury poisoning? Do you understand the insane amounts of toxins founds in "seafood"?
Back to this episode, Bullfighting is not only extremely cruel but it is utterly inhumane - this has nothing to do with "political correctness" and everything to do with your level of compassion (you have none). Judging by the fact that you consume veal regularly, eat pâté and more, you are not only one of the chefs we should be ignoring in this day and age but one we should request be banned from television due to the ignorance you regularly display.
Very disappointed.
P-Valley (2020)
Some good, some bad - An average series
I like Mercedes - she's tough, street smart and has what it takes to push past her ceilings and reach for a better life. She MAKES the show along with Uncle Clifford who has a weird sense of humour that keeps you chuckling and Tydell Ruffin's gangster Mayor.
I find Autumn and Keyshawn have no goods to back up their character backgrounds. The former because we're supposed to believe she's smart enough to outwit a two-bit thug - every time she busts out a bit of dialogue to show her "intelligence", I roll my eyes. Elarica doesn't play well what's supposed to be a smart character in hiding...
Keyshawn is as materialistic and shallow as one expects. Yes, she's in an abusive relationship but she doesn't do herself any favours with her current mentality. She's consumed with her looks like every other instagram wannabe - nothing behind the face. Are we supposed to "feel" for her?
The storyline is average, the characters are average -Lil Murda is hilariously bad, Andre Watkins' can't seem to focus on anything except "tail". I have not seen Katori Hall's original play - perhaps that's better.
The Rite (2011)
For Cryin Out Loud - Leave Animals Out Of This!
I'm usually a fan of horror flicks but this rubbish about the devil possessing animals or taking the form of animals (toad/mule etc.) is pure and utter rubbish. How many innocent creatures had to suffer at the hands of zealots believing this tripe?!
