The Regime (2024)
As someone from a post-communist country, I'm pleasantly surprised
I have to say I expected it to be way worse, and after watching 3 episodes I'm pleasantly surprised. Being from a post-communist country, I can definitely sense the satire and sarcasm of this show. They managed to portray the absurdity of dictatorships and its dictators pretty well. It reminds me of Lukashenko's Belarus or Ceausescu's Romania. I liked the subtle references to certain people and events. The "reunification" thing is basically what happened in Crimea, the Corporal practically became Elena's Rasputin for a while, and the whole "rural craze" was a spot on too, as such things really happened in my country during communism, not to mention faking some pseudo-historical theories of one's origin to boost their egos ("The Foundling"). I have to admit I am quite entertained, intrigued and want to watch more. Lastly, I will say that I'm not really surprised at the low rating, as there is many things about this show that your typical western audience simply wouldn't get.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005)
One of the few I really like to rewatch
It was such a joy to watch this show for the first time, and even still it's a joy to rewatch it, which frankly doesn't happen to me very often.
The humor is right up my alley, they're not afraid to be sometimes controversial and engage in touchy subjects, and it's soooo worth it. Personally, as a fan of dark humor, nowadays many seem to be afraid of offending people and it affects comedy too - I just find more and more comedies/comedians so boring and unfunny because of it.
The main characters are fun, the background characters are fun, literally every character in this show is original and funny in its own way. McPoyles, Cricket, even the characters' parents - all of them have something going on, and add up to the comedy. The dynamics between the characters are crazy.
I wish there was more comedy shows like that. It reminded me the best years of South Park I adored so much.
And Just Like That... (2021)
RIP Miranda
Now, I usually don't care enough for writing reviews, I have other things to do in life. But this show was just so cruelly botched, and ruined the legacy of the original series, I literally had to create an account and write my opinion about this. So, buckle up. It's a long ride.
I have SO, SO many problems with this show.
The main one, but sadly not the only one, is Miranda.
She used to be my second favourite character after Samantha. Where is my sassy, independent, career-oriented, ambitious, logical and down-to-earth lawyer queen? She's dead. Instead, we have a whiny, childish teenager with her head in the clouds. Someone who is pathetically simping for her crush, and is willing to cheat and destroy her family for them. Che doesn't even care about Miranda, but she threw away her everything for them, and for what?? Miranda resigning from some high-end scholarship just to go to LA with Che, and "be with them" when they are making a career?? How very UN-Miranda! This is literally what that Russian man Carrie was dating did to her with taking her to Paris. It frustrated me so much that Miranda seemed to not care that she's cheating on Steve and continued to do so until Che had a problem with it, even though it hurt her so much when he had sex with someone else once. She literally destroyed her family for Che, and in the end Che left her anyway. What a joke.
Next, we have Che. Oh how I wish Hollywood finally started making actually interesting and deep LGBT+ and minority characters, instead of making them just boring, stereotypical and one-dimensional. It's like according to Hollywood, the most important part of a LGBT+ character is being LGBT+, black character's is being black, etc. It is quite insulting. Being non-binary is Che's whole personality, basically. Their "comedy routines" are mainly unfunny gender identity preaching. Sometimes while watching I asked myself if Che can talk about anything else other than this topic, it's so terribly forced and feels totally fake.
Next, we have the kids. Oh boy, they're such an annoying spoiled brats. Brady in 1st season was bad, sex-obsessed and obnoxious, but he got a little bit better later on, when we saw him having issues with depression. But Charlotte's kids... oh my. Rose/Rock isn't even the worst, it's Lily. She is such an entitled, spoiled, rude, know-it-all brat, who constantly disrespects her mother. She literally kicks out Charlotte out of her own house just because she has some friends over. Charlotte is so pathetic, basically all her life now is fussing over these spoiled entitled kids, and spoiling them even more.
Other new characters just lack any originality or personality. Seema tries too hard to be a Samantha 2.0, Lisa has literally nothing going on, no plot whatsoever. She's just a "cool, rich black wife" trying to have some career on top of being a mom. The only somewhat interesting new character to me happened to be dr. Nya. She actually had a relatable problem - being in a relationship with a man you love, but who wants to have children, and you don't. So I'm giving the extra one star for her and Anthony, who is still himself, thank gods.
What did they do with Stanford?? Excuse me, but him suddenly disappearing without a word and going off to Japan to be a monk was the most ridiculous thing ever.
Also, Carrie not performing a CPR or even calling an ambulance for Big, was a cherry on top.
So yeah, what a disaster. While re-watching the original show, I'll try to pretend this doesn't exist. Like with Star Wars.
