Brad Pitt and George Clooney are definitely Hollywood heartthrobs, but while their work is all glam and glory, their personal lives tell a different story — especially for Pitt. Since the ’90s, when he first shot to fame, he’s had two big relationships that people still can’t stop talking about.

Pitt and Angelina Jolie were once seen as the ultimate couple, even with the shadow of Jennifer Aniston over them. Their split was a hot topic for years, and to maybe steer clear of more love drama, it looks like the actor is now taking relationship cues from Clooney.

Few cinematic characters have left as big of an impression as Ellen Ripley, Sigourney Weaver’s iconic “Alien” survivor, who led four films in the franchise and left behind some massive shoes to fill for everyone who’s come since. In “Alien: Romulus,” that’s a young cast of franchise newcomers, led by “Priscilla” and “Civil War” star Cailee Spaeny.
Directed by “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” filmmaker Fede Álvarez, the latest installment heads back between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” introducing a young group of friends desperate to escape their grungy mining colony. You will, of course, recognize the Xenomorph — H.R. Giger’s inimitable alien creature — but for everyone else, here’s a handy guide to the “Alien: Romulus” cast and characters.

Pitt allegedly might’ve wanted to omit love scenes from his movies out of respect for his ex-wife. Both Pitt and Jolie knew how intense that kind of intimacy could be between two actors. According to Mr. and Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman, producer Dave Matalon had reservations about their love scene in the movie. Never tell “Star Wars” the odds!
Things are moving faster than a Mos Espa podrace over at Lucasfilm. On Wednesday, we wrote that heavyweight writer-producer Damon Lindelof and his new partner (padawan?) Justin Britt-Gibson had walked away as writers of the upcoming (and untitled) “Star Wars” film. The project, currently more shrouded in more mystery than Emperor Palpatine, is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a “Ms. Marvel” vet and director-producer on a long list of documentaries.
But the Kathleen Kennedy-led production shingle has found its new scribe. Steven Knight, the writer-director of Tom Hardy vehicle “Locke” and creator of “Peaky Blinders,” is currently suiting up to travel to that galaxy far, far away. The British Knight has also written the screenplay for the Steven Frears film “Dirty Pretty Things,” the David Cronenberg film “Eastern Promises,” and the underrated Robert Zemeckis spy thriller “Allied.”

Lucasfilm has had difficulty getting a new Star Wars movie off the ground, but perhaps Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will have better luck. Variety has reported that Steven Knight is set to pen the screenplay for the untitled Star Wars movie with Ms. Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct. The Star Wars movie is the same one that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson originally penned before they departed.
Steven Knight is best known for creating Peaky Blinders, the period crime drama starring Cillian Murphy, but he is also known for his work on Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things, Locke, Allied, Spencer, Taboo, See, Sas: Rogue Heroes, and more. It’s said that this new Star Wars movie will mark the franchise’s return to the big screen following the release of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Production is slated to kick off next February with an official announcement...

“Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight is set to write the screenplay for the untitled “Star Wars” movie that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) is attached to direct, as original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have departed the project, Variety has confirmed.
The movie is widely expected to be among Lucasfilm’s first “Star Wars” films since 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” More information about the movie, including a possible title, is expected to be announced at the Star Wars Celebration in London in April. (A representative for Lucasfilm did not respond to a request for comment.)
Knight is a veteran screenwriter who launched his career specializing in gritty crime dramas like 2002’s “Dirty Pretty Things” and 2007’s “Eastern Promises,” eventually branching out to lighthearted dramedies (2014’s “The Hundred-Foot Journey”), war thrillers (2016’s “Allied”), and biopics (2021’s “Spencer”). Bidding to attract some of the biggest movies on earth for far longer shoots, Spain’s Canary Islands has powered up its maximum tax relief available on a single film lensed there to €36 million (38.9 million) per movie. That is one of the highest movie shoot caps in Europe.
In a parallel move, ceilings on fiscal incentives enjoyed by TV productions – whether made for established players or streaming services – have been raised to an extraordinary €18 million (19.4 million) per single episode. There is no limit on the number of episodes which can enjoy this facility.
Rolling off a Canary Island Special Zone (Zec) tax status offered to regions on the periphery of the European Union, the Islands already offered one of the highest deduction rates for film and TV shoots anywhere in the world: 54 for a first €1 million (1.1 million) eligible expenditure and 45 on further spend.

There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

The meltdowns were aplenty in this week’s episode of The Challenge, and while some of the sobbing was game-related, the rest of it was just a classic case of the beer tears.

As the house continued its efforts to snipe out the rookies, a love triangle (of sorts) formed around Nelson that sent Ashley Mitchell into quite a dramatic tizzy. Although she broke out playing the tough-skinned Andréa in the French show “Call My Agent!,” Camille Cottin comes off as gentle, bubbly and down to earth in real life. The hard-working Cottin didn’t shoot to fame; she became one of France’s hottest actors in her late 30s, after appearing in numerous stage plays, shorts and TV series over more than 15 years. Now, she is navigating between big American movies and French cinema with Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater,” which bows at Cannes, and Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” lined up for later this year, as well as Rachel Lang’s war drama “Our Men,” the closing film of Directors’ Fortnight.
What was your reaction when you read the script of “Stillwater” and what did you think of the character you played?
I read it in one go, and it was a very nice feeling because I got completely pulled in.

“Witches, they’re real, and they hate children,” Chris Rock warns us in the first The Witches trailer. Yes, even with Everybody Hates Chris-style narration, Four Tops orchestration, and CGI animation, Roald Dahl’s message lives on. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.” You can rest assured that person will not be a witch.
The children are entrapped in the bodies of mice, and the Warner Bros. feature adaptation of Dahl’s 1983 novel was supposed to be released in theaters. But it will hit HBO Max on Oct. 22. Just in time for Halloween. The film will fly into theatres internationally beginning October 28.
“Based on the timeless story, the reimagined Roald Dahl’s The Witches … brings a fresh sense of humor along with warmth and the unexpected to what is sure to be a Halloween favorite,” reads the official synopsis.

Now “The Witches” is back and ready to stream just ahead of Halloween.

Universal Pictures said on Friday that the studio has pushed the release of its heartfelt Tom Hanks-led sci-fi film “Bios” to April 2021.
The film was initially set to hit theaters on Oct. 2, 2020 but will now premiere on April 16, 2021. The news comes after Warner Bros. shifted a major portion of its future slate, including moving “Wonder Woman 1984” to Oct. 2, 2020, from its August release date.
“Bios” tells the story of a man, a robot and a dog who form an unlikely family. Hanks stars as Finch, a robotics engineer and one of the few survivors of a cataclysmic solar event that has left the world a wasteland. Brad Pitt knows how to take his shirt off all on his own.
The Oscar-winner, 56, featured in one of the most memorable scenes in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood when his character, stuntman Cliff Booth, strips off his top while fixing an antenna.
When it came time for Quentin Tarantino to direct the scene, he was quickly brushed aside by Pitt, who has a bit of experience getting shirtless on camera.
“It was funny because actually in public Brad is kind of shy about things like that,” Tarantino, 57, said on the latest episode of Amy Schumer’s 3 Girls, 1 Keith podcast.

After crafting some of the most clear-eyed, thrilling studio films of the last decade with Allied, Flight, The Walk, and, yes, even the fascinating Welcome to Marwen, Robert Zemeckis is entering the new decade with a perhaps more safe box office proposition: a new take on The Witches with Anne Hathaway, which still comes with some anticipation. While that will arrive this October, he’s now attached himself a new original, intriguing project.

Saturday Am Update: Disney's Frozen II is looking at another weekend atop the weekend box office after an estimated $7.8 million on Friday, with expectations for a third weekend around $35 million and a domestic cume topping $337 million. The performance is a bit behind Mojo's forecast, but is still in line with the average post-Thanksgiving dip for top titles.
Focus Features's Dark Waters delivered an estimated $1.39 million in its expansion this weekend into over 2,000 locations and is looking at a $4+ million three-day. To go along with that, the film received an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
In terms of the week's lone new wide release, Stx's Playmobil is hardly registering, delivering an estimated $167,000 from 2,337 locations, with current expectations for a three-day that won't even hit $800k. Should it manage to hit $800k, we're looking at a $342 per theater average, which ranks among the worst openings of all-time...

Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action “Pinocchio.”
Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz will produce through their company Depth of Field with Weitz penning the script. “Paddington” director Paul King had originally been tapped to direct but had to leave the project for unknown reasons at the beginning of the year. David Heyman, who was on board to produce, is also no longer involved with the film.
Though a deal hasn’t closed yet, Zemeckis has been eyeing the project since this summer. He was still, however, working on his current pic “The Witches” for Warner Bros. and didn’t want to commit to a new film until “The Witches” made more progress in production. With that film in post-production now, Zemeckis began turning his sights on his next project, with “Pinocchio” high on his list.

Brad Pitt does not have plans to retire from acting, but he is gearing up to appear even less frequently than he already does on the big screen. In an interview with The New York Times, the actor calls the current acting landscape “a younger man’s game” and says that he does not have any plans on starring in an abundance of new movies. If anything, Pitt’s time as an actor will become more rare.
“It’ll be fewer and farther in between for me, just because I have other things I want to do now,” Pitt said. “When you feel like you’ve finally got your arms around something, then it’s time to go get your arms around something else.”

Aside from Robert Pattinson in the titular role, most of the casting details revolving around The Batman are currently under wraps. This has caused many people to speculate about which star will be cast as which character. One of the most often discussed parts is Alfred Pennyworth, who’s been played by icons like Michael Caine, Jeremy Irons and many more over the years.
While there’s still no word on who will take the role next, our sources – the same ones who told us Ewan McGregor would be returning as Obi-Wan, and The Matrix 4 will feature a young Morpheus, both of which have now been confirmed – say that Jared Harris is currently one of several actors on Warner Bros.’ wish list to to portray Bruce Wayne’s butler.
The 57-year-old may seem a little young for some to take on the part, but many feel the same way about Pattinson.

This year, the motion picture academy made history by inviting an equal number of women and men to join. In all, 842 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

In its continuing push to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, 842 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call.
People of color (29 percent) and women (50 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.
In 2018, the Academy invited 928 new members.
Twenty-one Oscar winners are among the new invited members, including Guy Nattiv (“Skin”), filmmaker Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo”), Phil Lord, and Chris Miller (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”), and 82 Oscar nominees (including newbies like Lady Gaga and “Roma” breakout Marina de Tavira). Ten of the 17 branches invited more women than men. The percentage of women...

Half of the 842 new members invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are women, the group announced on Monday.
The organization behind the Oscars also disclosed that 29% of the new invitees are people of color. Should those people accept, and they almost universally do, the Academy will have doubled the percentage of nonwhite people in their ranks in four years.
In 2015, people of color accounted for only 8% of the Academy body. In 2019, it stands at 16%, the Academy reported. As it stands, the Academy counts 8,946 active members, with 8,733 eligible to vote on the Oscars. The total membership including retired members is 9,794. This year’s number falls short of 2018’s record of 928 invitations.
New members in this round include “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon Chu, actors Winston Duke and Gemma Chan, and screenwriters Ritesh Batra (“Photograph”), Chinonye Chukwu (“Clemency”), Park Young-soo (“Detective Dee”) and Ryo Sakaguchi (“Ant-Man and the Wasp...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 842 new members in their annual effort to bring in new blood to the organization that hands out the Oscars. This is down from the 928 members invited last year, but 50% of this year’s number are women, inching closer to the goal of creating an even playing field between female and male members. It marks an 7% increase in female members from 2015 to an overall 32% of the entire organization.
A total of 29% of the new class revealed Monday are people of color, marking an 8% increase in that statistic since 2015. Among the new invitees, 21 are already Oscar winners and 82 are past Oscar nominees.
New members among the acting branch include recent Best Song winner Lady Gaga, who is also being invited to the music branch; Sterling K. Brown; Claire Foy; and actors ranging in age from 23-year-old Spider-Man Tom Holland to the (shamefully) never-nominated legendary French star,...

Lady Gaga, Claire Foy and Sterling K. Brown are among the 842 people who have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy announced on Monday.
The announcement came two days after the Academy’s Board of Governors spent a Saturday meeting going over the lists of prospective members drawn up by each of the Academy’s 17 branches. This marks the fourth consecutive year in which several hundred film professionals have been invited to join the Academy. This will easily push the number of active Academy members over 9,000 and the number of Oscars voters over 8,000 for next year’s Academy Awards.
As usual in recent years, the huge list of new-member invitations was heavily weighted toward women, who made up 50 percent of the invitees (up from 49 percent last year), and non-white film professionals, who made up 29 percent. The list was also heavily weighted toward international members,...

Gold Derby: Charlotte, Catherine of Aragon is a seminal figure in European history. Were you at all apprehensive or nervous about playing her?
Charlotte Hope: It wasn’t apprehensive, I think mainly because I was so freaking excited. When you’re filming a TV show like that there’s not time to be afraid ‘cause it was so fast.
