I am an advocate of reading books rather than watching adaptations, and for this reason when I sat down to watch the Pilot I almost gave up in the beginning considering it to be another run of the mill Sleepy Hollow remake but what I saw was pretty fascinating. They seem to have only used The Horseman and Ichabod Crane and the original conflict that was at the heart of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is rendered just that, a legend with no mention anywhere. There are several elements that will allow for a thrilling plot, if played right. Although it seems like a lot of the elements in contemporary American horror will be incorporated, the good thing is that they never said anything about using the Irving classic to the detail. The underlying mysteries are far too many in number and as is the vogue, you are in for betrayals and cowardice and petty human nature making the drama enjoyable. While there are many biblical associations there is nothing new on the table. The undertones of witchcraft and the eternal fight between good and evil is there. Well, you need something.
Considering Len Wiseman's association with the Underworld franchisee I had some idea of what was in store for me. And he delivered.
The work by Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane is commendable as is Nicole Beharie as Abbie Mills. At present the cast is small but you never know when new players enter the scene.
So while the fall brings with it many new shows those interested in mysteries and drama and have no aversion to a little gore might want to give this small series a try. After all its only 5 episodes. Sit back and enjoy.
