In May 2008 four year old Callum Reid disappears after a barbecue given by his parents Claire and Daniel. Five years later workmen digging up a burst water main in the same street find Callum's body, carefully wrapped in a blanket. DCI Maggie Brand leads the new investigation. Pregnant when Callum went missing she had to drop out of the case, whose lack of solution destroyed her former boss Phil Anderton. Now her son Sam is starting school. Back in 2008 barbecue guests Teresa and Joe fight when she flirts with another man, Sean, leading to Claire and Daniel also rowing and sending Callum and his brother Luke home with German nanny Nina, who seems to be dominated by her unpleasant boyfriend Jason. In 2013 fresh evidence comes to light to show that Callum was buried three months after his disappearance.

Maggie goes to Germany to see Nina, who had a break-down following the events. Nina explains that she told Singer, a detective in the murder case, that Byrne wanted her to help him steal and use the Reids' credit cards and she had refused. Singer had then bullied her into helping him frame Byrne. As a result Byrne killed himself but this was before Callum was buried so he is ruled out of the new investigation. Claire discovers that the blanket in which Callum's body was wrapped came from her house and Maggie brings Daniel in for questioning. He admits that he lied about his whereabouts on the night of the disappearance as he was with Teresa, with whom he was planning to run away. Maggie is annoyed to be called to the school about Sam's introverted conduct and perturbed when he mentions a man to whom he speaks. At the same time the Reids are stalked by Tom Rose, who once did some work for them and who later confesses to Maggie that he killed Callum.
