21 July 2023 – Today marks the Verve Records/UMe/Universal Music Canada release of You’ve Got To Learn, a previously-unreleased recording of Nina Simone’s performance at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival. The album arrives as part of the “Happy Birthday Miss Simone” campaign, a year-long celebration of Simone’s 90th birthday.
You’ve Got To Learn is a major find for Simone’s fans. The album includes Simone’s first-ever recording of “Music For Lovers” and “Blues For Mama,” as well as the only-known live recording of “You’ve Got To Learn.” The historic six-song set also includes a straight “swinging” approach to “Mississippi Goddam,” Simone’s signature protest anthem, that is unique to this recording—it’s the only known version of Nina playing the song in this way.

Movie star John Wayne rightfully received a lot of criticism for racist statements that he made over the years. His harmful words ultimately overshadowed his monumental career in Western and war movies. So much so, that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences asked Wayne to present the Oscar for Best Actress on March 26, 1958.

Wayne said racist statements in his 1971 Playboy interview that will always haunt his memory. He wasn’t very fond of Native Americans, calling them selfish for not sharing their land. The actor didn’t think white folks did anything wrong by taking the country.
Additionally, Wayne had negative statements about Black people. Perhaps the most infamous part of the interview saw him admit, “I believe in white supremacy until the Blacks are educated to a point of responsibility.”

Photo: 'Wild is the WInd' Important Social Commentary The film takes place in South Africa; a country still grappling with racial and xenophobia issues. Naturally, the film's subject matter prominently involves these issues, as well as the issue of police corruption and racial biases. In 'Wild Is The Wind,' a partnership of a black and white police officer shows different perspectives and biases while conducting a murder investigation. It highlights the racial discrimination that is still prevalent in the world today and its continued effect of impeding justice. The contrast of bias between these partners exemplifies very familiar attitudes among many people. Vusi, the black officer, seems to lean irrationally on racial motivation during the murder investigation. While John, the white officer, tends to dismiss race as a factor in the investigation. These characters' attitudes represent a couple of the prevalent stances that are taken against the issue of racial discrimination.

“Enola Holmes 2,” starring “Stranger Things” breakout Millie Bobby Brown, has successfully cracked the code to climb to the top of Netflix’s weekly ratings for Oct. 31 through Nov. 6. And it had just three days to do so, while many of its competitors had the full seven.
The sequel to the 2020 mystery film counted 65.08 million hours viewed in its debut week on Netflix, rising to the top 10 in 93 countries.
Brown reprises the titular role of Enola Holmes, younger sister to the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). Hot on a new case, Enola’s mystery eventually intertwines with a case Sherlock is working on, so the siblings team up to pull at all the loose threads together, watching their case unravel before them.
And it appears that in the lead-up to watching the sequel, many viewers refreshed their memory by watching the original film, as it received 9.64 million viewing hours on its own.

With all the (justified) media notice of the surprise success of micro-budget horror film “Terrifier 2” (Iconic), studio-made but still low-budget “Barbarian” (Disney/3.99) is adding to its much bigger take with an amazing response on multiple home platforms.
The 4.5 million budget release from their Fox unit isn’t remotely aligned with what Disney ownership sees as a priority in their productions. It already has an over 40 million domestic theatrical gross.
It popped up on both HBO Max and Hulu 45 days after theatrical release. The availability came with no PVOD first, which is somewhat different than is typically seen from many studios taking the direct revenue from rentals and purchases ahead of subscriber-based streaming appeal.
The most amazing note on “Barbarian” is that it is #1 at Vudu, which ranks by revenue and usually favors higher-priced titles. An explanation could be that its 14.99 download sales boosted its figures. At iTunes and Google Play,...
