Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus, in comes more of the debut season of “Spellbound,” a serialized re-cut of Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” and several original series premieres, including “Black Cake” on Nov. 1.

Kevin Bacon may have taken a paddle to the ass in Animal House and an arrow through the throat in Friday the 13th but he gained his first true fame with 1984’s Footloose. From there, with movies like Flatliners, A Few Good Men and, perhaps most importantly, JFK, it seemed like Kevin Bacon had worked with just about every major name in Hollywood. Thus, the greatest movie challenge of all time was born: Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
But, as he explained on a recent episode of Podcrushed (via Entertainment Weekly), Kevin Bacon initially thought the Six Degrees game was making fun of him. “I thought that, and this is my own acting insecurity — impostor syndrome — I thought that the joke of it was that the great actors could be connected to a loser actor like me…They were saying, ‘Look, can you believe he can be connected by Meryl Streep?...

Those of us that were alive in 1989 can attest that Batmania had taken over. Warner Brothers’ marketing machine was working overtime to make sure that the bat symbol was everywhere. It’s no wonder that when the film came out, it was a giant hit grossing over $400 million dollars. Adjusted to 2023 rates, that is just over $1 billion dollars. When it came time for a sequel, the team got back together again and put out another home run although it would bring in a little bit less at the box office.
That was okay though as this time Warner Brothers had prepared to push the movie with all sorts of merchandise. Just about any type of clothing you could think of had a bat symbol on it. When it came time to make a third film, that’s when it all seemed to fall apart. Tim Burton had a...

Plot: A group of Australian teens use an embalmed hand to communicate with the dead.
Review: If there’s one thing you can rely on in horror movies is that a group of hard-partying teens are typically doomed. The kids in Talk to Me are a pretty mixed-up bunch, with them making an ill-advised decision to use an embalmed hand which allows them to host a spirit as long as they are in contact with the hand. The rule is if they have you for more than ninety seconds, you might be stuck with the spirit, and if you die with the spirit still in you, they have you forever. So why do the kids keep playing with the undead? Because apparently, being possessed feels fantastic, even if you lose all control and do messed-up things such as, in one moment, French kissing a dog.
Of course, you can bet that before long,...

This article contains spoilers for "Talk to Me."
Loss and grief bring a lot of changes to one's life, more than it may initially appear. It's a personal, grim reminder of the final destination that awaits us all, a full-on wake-up call that it can and will happen to you. As much as a death by natural causes hangs over every human being, the specter of unnatural death looms even larger; not just for reasons of unfairness, but because it implies an additional amount of pain and suffering coming along with it.
Thus, it's a natural impulse for most people (and especially young people) to not so much confront their fears but to dismiss, belittle and mock them, in the hopes that they'll be sufficiently diminished. In YouTube stars Danny and Michael Philippou's debut feature, "Talk to Me," the world of the dead is treated as something to be laughed at,...

One of Kevin Bacon’s earliest roles came in the 1980 slasher classic Friday the 13th, and he has enjoyed returning to the horror genre now and then ever since. A few years ago, he teamed up with Blumhouse Television to try to get a television series follow-up to the creature feature Tremors going at Syfy. That didn’t work out, but now Bacon and Blumhouse Television are joining forces again for a horror action series called The Bondsman!
Deadline reports that The Bondsman is set up at Amazon’s Prime Video. Bacon will be taking on the role of Hub Halloran, a backwoods bounty hunter who comes back from the dead with an unexpected second chance at life, and love, and a nearly-forgotten musical career — only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.
The first season of the series is expected to consist of eight half-hour episodes.

Elliot Page writes in his new memoir, “Pageboy,” that filming the 2017 “Flatliners” remake was “a true mess from the very beginning” and a “shit show” due to unsafe stunt work and instances of racism and queerphobia on set (via Entertainment Weekly). Or, as Page puts it: “It went off the rails.”
In an entire chapter devoted to the making of the Niels Arden Oplev-directed thriller, Page alleges he and co-star Kiersey Clemons were put in unsafe working conditions during one stunt scene.
“We were getting ready for a car stunt when Kiersey and I realized that everyone had a built-in thick seat belt, except for us,” Page writes. “No restraints, a basic safety measure of the carefully orchestrated, expensive and elaborate stunt that hadn’t been thought through… We looked to the various stunt crew members strapping the others in, perplexed, questioning why we weren’t being secured for the scene.

In the opening chapter of Elliot Page’s memoir, Pageboy, he writes about visiting a gay bar for the first time. He was 20 years old; it was the summer before 2007’s Juno premiered, about a decade and a half before he would come out as trans. “Shame had been drilled into my bones since I was my tiniest self, and I struggled to rid my body of that old toxic and erosive marrow,” Page writes. “But there was a joy in the room, it lifted me, forced a reaction in the jaw, an uncontrolled, steady smile.” Page never imagined he would write a book, but when the opportunity (and the self-assurance) came, the words flowed.
“I have this new ability to literally sit with myself and make things,” Page told THR over Zoom a few weeks before the memoir hit shelves. “I could never do that before [coming out].”

After spending 15-plus years as the brain behind the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, Justin Lin has lined up his first post-car racing film. The filmmaker, who left “Fast X” over creative differences last year, is set to direct “The Last Days of John Allen Chau,” IndieWire has confirmed.
The film, an indie based on the 2019 Outside Magazine article by Alex Perry, will represent something of a return to Lin’s roots. The director first rose to prominence with several independent films like “Shopping for Fangs,” 2002 Sundance title “Better Luck Tomorrow,” and 2007’s “Finishing the Game.” Since 2006, however, Lin has become best known for his work on the blockbuster “Fast and the Furious” movies, directing “Tokyo Drift” and the following four titles in the series. After handing the franchise off to James Wan and F. Gary Gray after “Fast and Furious 6,” he returned to the director’s chair for 2021’s “F9,...

The 1990 song "Blaze of Glory" from the "Young Guns II" soundtrack is impossible to resist. I feel pretty confident in saying that, when you read the title of that song, it began playing in your head. In fact, you'll be singing it for the rest of the day, and if anyone else is around, they'll join in with the harmony. Maybe you, like a young version of me, watched the video repeatedly, admiring ... the music. I didn't mean the exceedingly good-looking Jon Bon Jovi himself. Okay, that's a lie, but the song really is pretty great. There is a reason it's performed at every karaoke bar, including the fictional one in the afterlife in "The Good Place."
What you might not have realized about the song you cannot stop singing now that I've mentioned it, is that it was written over dinner with two stars of the 1990 sequel to 1988's "Young Guns.

A bundle of taut nerves stretched to their vomit-inducing breaking point, “Talk to Me,” the directorial feature debut from Australian brothers and Youtube stars Danny and Michael Philippou, is the type of horror film whose effectiveness arises from its barebones simplicity. It asks: What if “Flatliners” was rendered as a Monkey’s Paw for the teenage audiences that fuel today’s viral videos? What would the consequences, outside of personal shame (and minor embarrassment), be for those fame addicts? The film’s answer to these questions is stunning, if not an unbearable nightmare.

Hello, everyone! We’re back after a brief hiatus to give you a look at the horror and sci-fi headed home this week on home media. As it turns out, the month of August’s releases are starting off on a quiet note, as we have two titles getting the 4K treatment this Tuesday—Dario Argento’s Tenebrae and Flatliners from Joel Schumacher—and then a handful of indie horror arriving on both Blu-ray and DVD: Scream at the Devil, Paranormal Devil, The Farm, and Joker’s Poltergeist.
Flatliners 4K
Some Lines Shouldn’T Be Crossed.
Known for his impressively eclectic filmography and for helping to launch the careers of several young Hollywood stars of the 80s and 90s, Joel Schumacher tackles the existential question that, at one time or another, haunts us all: what awaits us after we die?

Much of the ink printed about Showtime’s prestige series The First Lady has (deservingly) been in reference to its female creative team, whether it be stars Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, director Susanne Bier or producer Cathy Schulman. But there’s a good story to be told about two men on The First Lady, specifically creator Aaron Cooley and co-star Kiefer Sutherland.
Cooley cut his teeth in entertainment by starting out as an assistant to filmmaker Joel Schumacher in 2002. By that point, the in-demand auteur had already churned out a long list of high-profile Hollywood films including St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, A Time to Kill, Flawless and Tigerland, to name a few. But there’s one more feature that’s worthy of mention because it left quite an impression.

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

“We Are The Weirdos, Mister.” A phrase you’ll find printed over t-shirts, pin badges, mugs, earrings, tote bags, necklaces, and more all over the internet. It’s the most iconic line from The Craft, a film released 25 years ago that still has a rabid following today. For anyone unfamiliar with The Craft, it’s a line spoken by Fairuza Balk’s Nancy, an inferno in black lippy and sunglasses, the de facto leader of a homemade coven made up of outsiders who have taken the raw deal the world has given them and rejected it by learning to harness the power of nature. This line is everything. We are no longer going to be victims, it says. We will no longer be afraid. We reclaim our space, our power. That we are four teenaged girls will no longer mean we have to watch out for ‘weirdos’ – because it is us who are the weirdos.

"You aren't supposed to believe in these things." Netflix has debuted a new trailer for a ghost horror film from Thailand called Ghost Lab, streaming in the US and Thailand starting this May. After witnessing a haunting, two young doctors become dangerously obsessed with obtaining scientific proof that ghosts exist. Gla and Wee, played by Paris Intarakomalyasut and Thanapob Leeratanakajorn, two medical doctor buddies see a ‘ghost’ with their own eyes when an afterlife experiment goes wrong. The encounter spawns an insatiable desire to find a scientific explanation for ghostly spirits, and to find proof of the afterlife. Their fixation and reckless pursuit of unattainable knowledge will take them down a rabbit hole that might cost them their friendship, and their loved ones. Also starring Nuttanicha Dungwattanawanich as Mai. This is a cool concept (reminds me of Flatliners), especially from a Thai filmmaker, it feels like there's a whole different...

After 30 years, Kiefer Sutherland and Lost Boys co-star Jason Patric have united to set the record straight about their past love triangle with mutual ex Julia Roberts. In 1991, the actress, then 23, was practically a real-life Runaway Bride. On June 14 of that year, she was supposed to marry then-24-year-old Sutherland, her co-star in the 1990 film Flatliners. The two were set to exchange vows on a Twentieth Century Fox sound stage, decorated to look like a pastoral garden, in front of about 150 guests. Instead, on the day of the wedding, the groom-to-be was spotted moving out of the Hollywood Hills home he shared with Roberts, while she was seen on a lunch date with Patric,...

HBO Max has set the cast for the drama pilot “Red Bird Lane,” with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon set to star.
Along with Sarandon, Kiersey Clemons, Isidora Goreshter, Danny Huston, Ash Santos, Fiona Dourif, Dizzie Harris, and Tara Lynne Barr will also star.
The show is described as a psychological thriller about eight strangers who arrive at an isolated house — all for different reasons — and quickly realize that something sinister and terrifying awaits them.
Sarandon will play the hostess of the house, Catherine. She is brilliant, beautiful, magnetic, and a murderer.
Sarandon is a five-time Oscar nominee, having won the award for best actress for “Dead Man Walking.” She has also been nominated for nine Golden Globes as well as six Emmys. Her other film roles include “Thelma & Louise,” “Bull Durham,” and “The Client.” On the TV side, she recently starred in the critically-acclaimed FX series “Feud.” Beyond that,...

Late great visual stylist Joel Schumacher’s death-defying science fiction thriller Flatliners (1990) turns 30 today. It’s a classic, positively Frankenstein-ian examination of ambitious innovators prioritizing their careers in science over their own safety.
Five enterprising Chicago medical students push themselves beyond the normal confines of mortality in a series of “flatlining” experiments, wherein one student at a time lets the others level their heart rate for increasingly more insanely extended durations. These arrogant doctors-in-waiting discover that, upon resuscitation, each of them has brought something back with them: a haunting childhood trauma that, though invisible to anyone else, eventually poses a very tangible physical threat to that particular character’s well-being.
For Nelson Wright (Kiefer Sutherland), that trauma manifests itself as a schoolmate (Joshua Rudoy) he and his friends bullied into a horrific accident. For Rachel Manus (Julia Roberts), it’s her father (Benjamin Mouton), a Vietnam War vet who committed suicide in her youth.

After battling cancer for a year, Joel Schumacher passed away this week at the age of 80, and some of the more famous people he helped in his long career have been remembering the different ways his work, friendship and support affected them.
Schumacher directed a number of memorable films over the decades, including St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys, Flatliners, Falling Down, Tigerland and A Time to Kill. In a statement, Matthew McConaughey has opened up about his breakout role in that 1996 John Grisham adaptation, crediting Schumacher with altering his professional trajectory against the odds.

I’ll never forget the one time I got to talk to Joel Schumacher, the fluky, baroquely skilled, stylishly protean Hollywood filmmaker who died Monday at 80. It was June 1985, and I was one of the journalists attending the New York press junket for “St. Elmo’s Fire,” the post-teenage soap opera that already felt like a reunion of “The Breakfast Club.” The junket was buzzier than anyone had anticipated, because it coincided with the arrival of the latest issue of New York magazine, with its famous cover headline that christened the film’s stars “the Brat Pack.”
At the time, I was still in the demo for “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and had a real soft spot for it. In hindsight, it’s a quintessential Schumacher movie: a little smart, a little sappy, more than a little in love with its glamorously questing and angst-ridden twentysomething characters. In its glossy ’80s-youth-market way,...
