With Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and the awesome might of Mother Nature out in front of the marketing for Twisters, many may not know about the additional treats swirling in Lee Isaac Chung’s legacy sequel to the original 1996 hit. Among Powell’s group of YouTube-streaming weather junkies are Brandon Perera, Katy O’Brien, Sasha Lane and, most exciting to music fans of the aughts and 2010s, Tunde Adebimpe, best known as the frontman for TV on the Radio. Adebimpe plays a technobabble-spewing weather weenie named Dexter, and while he doesn’t get tons of screen time, he kind of steals every scene he’s in.
Adebimpe, of course, is no newcomer to film, having starred in the 2001 indie Jump Tomorrow (based on a short completed at NYU) before his band made its first recordings. He also appeared in Jonathan Demme’s 2008 winner Rachel Getting Married (he was the guy Rachel was getting married to!

Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, the Polish composer who won a Oscar for his score of the 2004 film Finding Neverland, died today in Krakow following a years-long battle with Multiple System Atrophy. He was 71.
His death was announced bythe Polish Music Foundation.
A prolific composer for film and television, Kaczmarek’s credits beginning in the 1980s and building momentum in the 1990s and 2000s. Among the titles: Total Eclipse, Washington Square, Aimee and Jaguar, Unfaithful, Soldier’s Girl, The Visitor, City Island, Get Low and Paul, Apostle of Christ.
But it was his score for Finding Neverland that he’ll perhaps be most remembered for. Nominated for both BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, the score for Marc Forster’s J.M. Barrie 2004 biopic won the Oscar for Best Original Score the following year. The win made Kaczmarek an international presence in cinema.

Exclusive: Brooklyn-based filmmaker Ged Dickersin (Coda) is launching True Indy, a production company intent on making films that can and should be made independently, with filmmakers telling acutely relevant stories for the world market.
True Indy sees the opportunity to attract financing for films that can be made in the $1 million-$5 million range, reducing the financial risk to investors and increasing the chances for a return on the investment. The company is introducing its slate of original U.S.-born indies at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, as well as looking to partner with filmmakers from around the world in international co-productions.
“Independent filmmaking has developed so much, with budgets that exceed what the new world market can return, making it difficult for private equity to support the independents,” Dickersin said. “Coming out of the pandemic and the strikes, the cost of making a film has inflated drastically,...

Within the last half decade, the kids space has experienced a rapid rise and fall.
As streamers increased their presence within U.S. households, they turned to kids content, a space that has historically been cheaper to produce but yielded higher financial returns, as evidenced by successes like Paw Patrol, Cocomelon, Gabby’s Dollhouse and Bluey.
But led in a cost-cutting strategy by Warner Bros. Discovery (and followed by the likes of Disney, Netflix and Paramount), over the last two years, even legacy brands like Scooby-Doo and Sesame Street have become victims of cancellation or disappearance from platforms with little warning and little to no other ways to access the content.
As many others in the industry are pulling back in the kids space, PBS is gearing up to do even more. “When you think of kids media as just a marketing tool or if you think of it as...

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.
Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

Nearly two decades after scoring an audience award at Sundance for “Two Family House,” a smartly understated yet deeply affecting indie about a Staten Island factory worker who deeply regrets stifling his showbiz ambitions, director Raymond De Felitta steps back up to the plate with “Bottom of the 9th,” another dramatically solid and emotionally satisfying drama that pivots on a long-shot attempt to fulfill long-delayed dreams.
De Felitta — whose resume also includes “City Island,” “Rob the Mob” and the 2016 TV miniseries “Madoff” — takes an admirably restrained approach to a familiar scenario that could have come off as sappy in the wrong hands. At the same time, however, he allows his most valuable players, led by Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara, more than enough freedom to make vivid and compelling impressions within the lines he has drawn.

Lfs swaps Covent Garden for London City Island following a proposed move to the Barbican falling through.
The London Film School (Lfs) has found a new home on London City Island, the latest glass-and-steel Docklands neighbourhood to spring up on the capital’s eastern fringe.
The Lfs is following in the footsteps of the English National Ballet, and its associated school, which announced in May 2015 they would be swapping their Kensington home in West London for a purpose-built venue in the new neighbourhood.
The Lfs, which has been based in Convent Garden in central London for more than 50 years, has been looking for a new location for some time.
In 2015, it was forced to withdraw from a deal with the City of London to relocate to the Barbican Centre in 2017 after a $14m-$17m (£12m-£14m) project to convert a former exhibition space fell through due to a shortfall in private investment.

Something I'll be touching on in today's Los Fanboys Podcast, as part of our Suicide Squad discussion, is that Rick Famuyiwa's The Flash movie will really be the first film of the Geoff Johns Era of the Dceu. The film, which will find Ezra Miller front-and-center as Barry Allen for the first time, now has a start date and a location.
It would appear that Miller better get comfortable living in London for a while. He's currently there filming Justice League with director Zack Snyder, and it is now being reported that The Flash will start filming there as well, starting in January of 2017.
There's plenty of reasons to be excited about this film, and the fact that Miller is turning his version of Allen into quite a scene stealer in Justice League, is a big part of that. The actor has made a strong impression on audiences in...

It was the hair, at first I thought I would hate this movie because of the kid’s hair. Allow me to explain, Jude is one messed up teenager (aren’t all teenagers messed up in the movies?) I had a similar feeling many moons ago, when I saw Primal Fear and thought, "The world better keep an eye on this Edward Norton guy." I'll admit, I haven't seen any of his films since- mainly because they just don't interest me. But I'm sure his work has been stellar in them. It would appear Zack Snyder agrees with me that this guy's got "it." According to Miller, Snyder handpicked him to play the cinematic version of DC's The Flash without even auditioning him.
In a talk with MTV, Miller recounts how he was basically minding his own business on vacation in Costa Rica, when he received a call that would change his life.

var brightcovevideoid = '3607311203001'; Jennifer Lopez returned to the block where it all started for her first-ever performance in the Bronx Wednesday evening. The free show, held at Orchard Beach and sponsored by State Farm Neighborhood Sessions, was an emotional mix of old and new songs that had about 25,000 J.Lovers of all ages dancing and cheering for the Latina star. "This is such an amazing moment for me, I'm so happy to be home. Doing this tonight is honestly a dream come true for me. Where my Latinos at?! That's right, we're in here!" It’s difficult to be scared of what you don’t believe in. Michael King, a documentary filmmaker whose wife has just died, has no belief in an afterlife and thus feels no fear when it comes to exploring the supernatural. He’s all too willing to tempt dark paranormal forces during the making of his latest film, and he’ll learn the hard way that supernatural forces not only exist, but are capable of great evil.
Anchor Bay Films’ upcoming horror movie The Possession of Michael King will be adding some paranormal scares to the summer.
The Possession of Michael King is slated for an August 22nd theater release and a home media release on August 26th:

Who doesn’t like Andy Garcia? Sure, he was in the only regrettable entry to The Godfather trilogy, but he more than redeemed himself with a career going on four decades that has seen everything from the major blockbusters to more nuanced fare a la Kenneth Branagh’s underrated Dead Again. His recent choices have been dynamic and engaging, like City Island, which is worth putting on right now. As in, stop reading this review and watch it; Garcia at his best in years. Similarly Vera Farmiga is at the top of her game professionally. Currently haunting TVs as the titular Norma running Bates Motel, she’s throwing in key performances in flicks like The Conjuring after a career that catapulted with The Departed and Up In The Air. These two should be a rock star team, but, sadly, in At Middleton, the script and direction are middling at best.

There is nothing quite like a delicious lobster dinner, especially by the beach. Khloé Kardashian and French Montana continued their New York getaway and enjoyed a tasty intimate meal at Lobster House on City Island on Saturday evening. The pals, who spent three hours at the restaurant, sat close to each other and dined right by the water. The 29-year-old brunette beauty looked casual chic in a black top, light skinny jeans, black pumps, a tan coat and aviator shades, while the rapper opted for a black top with matching pants. Before this dinner sighting, the duo was most recently spotted grabbing some late-night pizza at Star Gourmet in Manhattan early Saturday morning. They began their...

Miami - We've so often seen Andy Garcia performing in an Italian-American gangster guise – from “The Untouchables” to “Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead” to, of course, his Oscar-nominated breakout role in “The Godfather Part III” – that it's easy to forget the Havana-born actor's Cuban heritage. Or perhaps not so easy in Miami, Garcia's hometown from the age of five. Back in town for the Miami Film Festival premiere of his new film “Rob the Mob,” Garcia is greeted with a collective roar of affection by the local crowd packing out the city's spectacular Gusman Theater; earlier that day, when we meet for a chat in the Standard Hotel restaurant, he has the breezy assurance of a man who knows his way around. His old high school, he points out, is a short distance down the street, while a number of his films have played the festival...

When it comes to New York City filmmakers, you have your Woody Allens and your Spike Lees and Martin Scorseses, but in recent years, a new breed of filmmakers has emerged trying to tell some of the other 8 million stories set in the city. Granted, filmmaker Raymond De Felitta is not exactly a young new face, having made his first short back in 1990, but with his last movie City Island and his most recent one, Rob the Mob , he has painted two very specific portraits of New York City and its people that makes him a filmmaker that really understands how to translate that onto the big screen. Rob the Mob stars Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda as young married couple Tommy and Marie Uva, who after being released from prison on two-bit crimes get the idea to use the crime family's...

The New York-based, New York-centric Raymond De Felitta has been the Jean Renoir of the outer-boroughs since the tender “Two-Family House” (2000) made a star-crossed Shangri-La out of Staten Island. (His debut short, “Bronx Cheers” and the popular family drama/comedy “City Island” 2009 were set in the Bronx.) His latest “Rob the Mob,” which arrives in NY theaters Friday (March 28 in La), is situated largely in Queens, but is a radical change of pace for the director in terms of both style and subject. And it offers the best time to be had at the movies thus far this year.A caper flick-cum-love-story-cum-road movie -- even if all the roads seem to be Northern Boulevard or Jamaica Avenue -- “Rtm” is based on the crime spree, or the Is-It-Really-a-Crime? spree, committed by a pair of young lovers who robbed Mafia social clubs in the early ‘90s. Dog Eat Dog: De Felitta’s Entertaining Take of a Take
After the success of his 2009 indie feature, City Island, Raymond De Felitta turns to a scrappy ‘based on a true story’ vehicle with Rob the Mob, a film that manages to override predispositions and assume an energetic momentum that is both rewarding and engaging. An interestingly varied cast, populated by a several faces instantly recognizable from either “The Sopranos” or various Martin Scorsese films, provides the film with immediate likeability, an entertaining mix of mafia history and character study.
In 1991, while the Gotti trial holds everyone’s rapt attention, Tommy (Michael Pitt) is paroled after getting busted for holding up a floral shop with girlfriend Rosie (Nina Arianda). While Rosie has kicked drugs and a life of crime to clean up her act, she now works as a star performer at a collection agency run by Dave Lovell (Griffin Dunne...

Well, I said in my review that the high-tension Brazilian kidnap thriller "A Wolf at the Door" was highly impressive stuff, and it seems the jury at the Miami Film Festival agreed. Not only did Fernando Coimbras' debut feature take the top prize at last night's festival awards ceremony, beating nine other films in the Knight Competition for Spanish and Latin American narrative cinema, but Coimbras was further rewarded with the Best Director award. That the jury -- led by Spanish producer Enrique Lopez Lavigne, whose credits include "The Impossible" -- chose to doubly honor Coimbras in this fashion marks a serious show of faith in a filmmaker whose snappy arthouse-genre chops have serious crossover potential. ("A Wolf at the Door" also won the Latin Horizons section last year at the San Sebastian fest, where it premiered; Brazil has a formidable candidate for Oscar submission here.) It's not as if...

Chicago – The actor Andy Garcia has been known throughout the years as a tough-guy leading man, with memorable roles in “The Godfather: Part III” and the “Ocean’s Eleven” series. He latest role is a gentle and comic turn, as a father doing a college tour with his son, and discovering more than expected in “At Middleton.”
Andy Garcia has experienced a brilliant American Dream story. He was born in Cuba, came to America as a child, where his father developed a successful perfume company. He was an athlete in high school, and turned to acting in his senior year. After graduating college, he moved to Los Angeles and began to move up the ladder. After doing “The Godfather: Part III,” Garcia continued with leading man roles in “Internal Affairs,” “Hero” and “When a Man Loves a Woman.” He is taking on more character parts at this point in his career,...

Michael Pitt, sitcom star Ray Romano, Andy Garcia, Broadway sensation Nina Arianda....wait, what? Yeah, the cast for "Rob The Mob" is a bit all over the place, and even the title is a bit too cutesy but you have to admit, the trailer for this looks far more interesting, particularly as it keeps going, more than you would have previously thought possible. Set in 1992, but weirdly boasting costume and set designs that seem more 1970s, the is a based on a true story tale of a young Queens couple who robbed a series of mafia social clubs and got away with it before being targeted by both the mob and the FBI. Admittedly, director Raymond De Felitta ("City Island") isn't putting too high a bar on the proceedings, aiming for a loose, breezy vibe, so it works on that pretty modest level we suppose. And while Garcia has played...

When a couple in love from Queens was down on their luck, they decided to pick themselves up by pointing a gun at the mafia. Michael Pitt ("Boardwalk Empire") and Nina Arianda (Win Win, Tower Heist) play a couple who hold up some mafia social clubs until they get in way over their head by picking up a mob family tree list that catches the interest of the FBI. Some familiar mobster faces like Andy Garcia and Michael Rispoli pop up, and Ray Romano is also here, maybe trying to shake his TV sitcom image for better or worse. It's at least an original story, and the trailer makes it look promising, but we're not sure if it'll work. Located across the water from City Island in the Bronx, the half-mile long Hart Island is the largest mass grave site in the United States, with nearly one million New Yorkers buried there. What's most unusual about the island, however, is that you will find no headstones indicating the names of the deceased. In fact, you won't find anything there - because you're not allowed to visit.
Formerly a prison for Confederate soldiers and more recently the home to a women's asylum, Hart Island is now the final resting place for New Yorkers whose bodies haven't been claimed by family members, and it's been closed off to the public for the past 35 years. A veritable dumping ground for unclaimed infants and adults alike, the bodies brought to Hart Island are mostly laid to rest by lowly paid inmates from Riker's Island, who oftentimes construct simple wooden crosses to mark the mass grave sites.

That title may feel like an effort to damn the film with faint praise, but it is not intended to be a slight on what looks like a thoroughly sweet and enjoyable film.
So much comedy these days seems to skew towards the lewd and crude it is refreshing to see a couple of seasoned pros (Andy Garcia of The Untouchables, Godfather Pt 3 and City Island fame and Vera Farmiga of Source Code, Up In The Air and The Departed) enjoying themselves with endearing laughs.
