Though Johnny Depp had his own ups and downs throughout his several-decade-long acting career, with most of the biggest problems coming in the actor’s way after a scandalous trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, he’s to this day one of Hollywood’s most lucrative actors.
Having started his path around 40 years ago, Depp could easily be considered the industry’s expert with no real obstacle to ever impede him, yet there’s at least one movie that the actor himself thinks left him totally worn out back in the day.
In 2005, Depp starred in Laurence Dunmore’s directorial debut The Libertine that, based on Stephen Jeffreys’ play of the same name, follows carefree and rakish poet John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester.
As Wilmot sees no harm in drowning his own life in endless amounts of alcohol and one-off sexual encounters with a myriad of women, he yet faces...

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a Bridgerton spinoff series that shows us how life was in the Ton during the early days of Queen Charlotte and King George’s marriage. We get to see how they meet and fall in love, how her reign leads to social change in the Ton, and how she became the strong and influential Queen that we see in Bridgerton’s first two seasons. But just because this series introduces us to younger versions of familiar characters doesn’t mean that it’s stuck in the past. Queen Charlotte also features an arc set in the “present day” Regency era of the original series that focuses on Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton’s friendship.
Between both eras, Queen Charlotte has a massive cast full of new and familiar faces. If you want to be as up to date on the hot gossip of the ton as Lady Whistledown,...

I don’t believe I have any more power now than I did at 22,” says Samantha Morton. “And I didn’t have any power then.”
That’s a startling statement to process after watching the 45-year-old’s regal performance in The Serpent Queen, during which she wields power with terrifyingly casual control and cruel smirks, as heads roll on her command. She stars as Catherine de Medici, the Italian merchant’s daughter who became queen of France in 1547, gradually acquiring a reputation as one of the most brutal and calculating European rulers of the period.
The crisp and witty feminism of the new Starz series highlights the misogynistic myths that history has spun around the “Medici Bitch” (who wasn’t conventionally pretty or submissive and did not conceive a child in the first decade of her marriage). But it doesn’t patronise its heroine by attempting to reinvent her as a misunderstood goody.

“Anatomy of a Scandal” star Rupert Friend has signed on to star as famed Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache in “The Yellow Tie,” an upcoming biopic of Celibidache’s life, Variety can exclusively reveal.
Friend will have a central role in the feature, playing the young Celibidache. As Variety revealed last year, John Malkovich is also signed on to play an older version of the conductor.
The duo last appeared on screen together in 2004’s “The Libertine,” in which Johnny Depp also starred as the Duke of Rochester. Friend has also appeared in features including “Hitman: Agent 47” and “The Death of Stalin.” He will next be appearing in “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.
Serge Ioan Celebidachi, the conductor’s son, will direct “The Yellow Tie” based on a screenplay he co-wrote with James Olivier.
Robert W. Cort has also boarded the biopic as an executive producer.

Most actors keep their awards in their homes or offices, but not Rosamund Pike. During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres this week (via The Independent), the “Gone Girl” and “I Care A Lot” actress confirmed she buries her acting trophies in her home garden because the thought of displaying them inside is too awkward to bear. Pike just won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for her performance in “I Care A Lot” (now streaming on Netflix). The actress’ other awards include a Primetime Emmy for “State of the Union” and a British Independent Film Award for “The Libertine,” among other prizes.
“It’s probably [something] deeply psychological…if you’ve got any psychiatrists or therapists in your audience, maybe they’ll say it’s probably some deep lying imposter syndrome,” Pike said about burying her awards. “I find it an uneasy thing to...

Hello and welcome back to our roundup of news stories from theatre, film, and television. Film Glastonbury has barely begun but already the bands have been overshadowed by Johnny Depp’s mention of an assassination attempt on U.S. President Donald Trump. The actor was introducing a screening of his film “The Libertine” when he asked, “Can you bring Trump here?” After boos from the crowd, he said, “You misunderstand completely. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” Alluding to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by the actor John Wilkes Booth in 1865, Depp acknowledged at the time that this might get him in hot water with the press, especially back home. We’ll have to see what the media fallout is but, after the reputational damage of his recent marriage breakdown, chances are that news outlets won’t give him an easy ride. From one festival to another now,...

This post has been updated with new information. Johnny Depp did not mince words when talking about President Donald Trump during the Glastonbury Festival in England on Thursday. The Pirates of the Caribbean star, who was on hand for a special screening of his 2004 film The Libertine, brought up the president while addressing the crowd. "Can you bring Trump here?" he asked. The crowd began booing, to which Johnny continued, "No, no, no, you misunderstood completely. I think he needs . . . help." The actor went on to reference the 1865 assassination of Abraham Lincoln by actor John Wilkes Booth. "When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?" When the audience cheered and clapped, Johnny said, "I want to clarify, I'm not an actor. I lie for a living." In response to Johnny's comments, the White House issued a statement on Friday. "President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it's sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead. I hope that some of Mr. Depp's colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official." Johnny has since apologized for the remark. "I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump," Johnny said in a statement to People. "It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone." Back in February 2016, Johnny famously portrayed Trump in a hilarious Funny or Die spoof about his book, The Art of the Deal.

The actor appeared at the Glastonbury Festival in England on Thursday, where he alluded to a presidential assassination.
While on stage to introduce a screening of his 2004 film The Libertine, Depp, 54, asked the crowd whether Trump could attend the festival. Johnny Depp needs to go on an extended hiatus. Fresh off the record-low totals for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the actor appeared at the Glastonbury Festival in southern England on Thursday for a screening of his 2004 drama “The Libertine,” and he only had Trump on the brain while making his introduction.

“Can we bring Trump in?” Depp asked the crowd during his opening remarks. “I think Trump needs help. There are a lot of dark places he could go. I’m not insinuating anything – by the way this will be in the press and it will be horrible – but when was the last time an actor assassinated a president?”
We’re not positive Depp knows the answer to that question (the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by actor John Wilkes Booth), but we do know that Depp probably shouldn’t be making assassination jokes abroad. He has every right to crack this kind of joke with his friends and family, but doing it on a global stage in a foreign country isn’t in good taste at all. Remember what happened when the Dixie Chicks joked about Bush?
“Don’t worry, I’m not an actor, I lie for a living,” Depp said after his joke, but that didn’t prevent it from leaving a bad taste in many people’s mouths.

During an appearance Thursday at the annual Glastonbury music and arts festival in Southern England, Johnny Depp had some harsh words for Donald Trump — and along with them a historical joke even he realized might end up backfiring on him: “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” Depp’s joke is of course a reference to John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln who was an actor, from a famous family of actors. The actor made the comments while introducing “The Libertine,” his 2004 film directed by Laurence Dunmore, as part of the festival’s film component.

Rosamund Pike, the star of the highly anticipated film, Gone Girl, is about to get a lot of attention for her standout role as Amy Elliott Dunne, a disillusioned housewife who suddenly disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary. The part is one intense (and showy) role, and will surely stick with audiences well after the end credits stop rolling.
With all the buzz coming her way, it’s a good time to get to know the 35-year-old English actress making a big splash Stateside.
She’s a Bond Girl
While this is definitely her biggest role, it’s hardly her first. The actress’ first big screen part was Miranda Frost, a villainous Bond Girl in Pierce Brosnan’s final James Bond film Die Another Day. She was the 68th actress to be featured as a woman who finds herself entangled with the famed British spy.

Homeland star to take over videogame adaptation after death of Fast and Furious actor, while James Marsden to take The Best of Me lead
• Paul Walker died after crashing at over 100mph, coroner's report reveals
The unexpected death of actor Paul Walker ina high-speed road accident has left film producers scrambling to recast movies that the Fast and Furious star had planned to take on.
According to the Wrap, Homeland star Rupert Friend is set to step into the lead role of Agent 47, which Walker was due to act in straight after finishing Fast and Furious 7. Agent 47 is a remake of the successful 2007 film Hitman, starring Timothy Olyphant, which was itself based on a popular videogame of the same title. Though clearly a good fit for Walker, the role of a lethal assassin would appear to be more of a stretch for Friend, who is better known for his work...

From the use of Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" (twice) to choice morsels of quotes such as, "Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you hide yourselves in firmly constructed towers" (from the Koran), the specter of death haunts "Diana." While that's not a surprise, given that the story tracks her life in the two years leading up (and including) her passing, it's just one of many elements the script by Stephen Jeffreys ("The Libertine") isn't quite sure how to handle. Set against a chronicle of Princess Diana's last and most meaningful relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, it's a fine balance between tragedy and ghoulishness, and sadly, the film never finds it. Graceless, clumsy and uncertain, "Diana" is the result of what happens in trying to honor the late Princess by engaging in the very tabloid speculation that marred her life. In the slight defense of the film,...

I'm really looking forward to Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, largely out of curiosity, but also now for another reason, the work of composer Michael Nyman who took over scoring duties from Lee's Red Hook Summer composer, Bruce Hornsby. Nyman is best known for his work on The Piano, Gattaca and The End of the Affair, all of which earned him a Golden Globe nomination, but it has been some time he scored anything mainstream with the likes of the documentary Man on Wire and the little-seen Johnny Depp starrer The Libertine as the most recognizable titles in his filmography since 99's End of the Affair. I don't know if Nyman's score was used for this new trailer and I'm inclined to believe it isn't, or at least expect the actual score will be toned down a bit because I can't imagine an aggressive score will match some of the...
