The beloved gang is back! Simba, Nala, Rafiki, Zazu, Timon, Pumbaa and yes, even Mufasa are back for Disney's new Lion King sequel, although the cast has had a bit of a shakeup. The movie The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, the follow-up to the straight-to-video films The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and The Lion King 1½, will air on Nov. 22 on Disney Junior. The new flick will be followed by a series, The Lion Guard, which will air on the channel in 2016. The film and show focus on Simba and Nala's son Kion, who leads a team of animals to protect the Pride Lands. "It's kind of like The Lion King meets The Avengers," Nancy Kanter,...

What's the only thing worse than a sequel? The only prospect worse than paying £10 at your local cinema to have your favourite movie ruined, forever. The answer has three words. Straight-to-video.
In the '90s, home release sequels became fairly common. You'd greet them with surprise at your local Blockbusters and then want to pull your eyeballs out when you took them home and watched them. They're probably called straight-to-dvd or straight-to-Blu-ray now, but they still exist.
With the announcement that Dolph Lundgren will be starring in Kindergarten Cop 2 (because of course), here are 21 absolute stinking sequels - the vast majority of which weren't even considered good enough for the cinema. How many of them have you watched?
1. American Pie Presents: Band Camp
2. American Pie Presents: Beta House
Maybe it's the Eugene Levy factor - just why did he keep starring in all the sequels?! - but we have weird...

Sequels and spinoffs are all the rage on the big screen these days, but the news that Disney is moving forward with a Frozen 2 still comes as something of a surprise considering the studio has been reticent to pump out theatrically-released follow-ups to its biggest hits - only The Three Caballeros, The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000 and Winnie the Pooh are part of the Disney Animated Canon.
However, throughout the '90s and '00s Disney had a lucrative side-business in direct-to-video sequels that were turned around quickly and cheaply and made the studio a fast buck. Many execs felt that these cheapened the originals and John Lasseter put the brakes on them, although the recent Tinker Bell films (branching out from Peter Pan) have their roots in this release model.
Digital Spy revisits 13 of Disney's most unnecessary straight-to-video sequels below:

Translating movies and television for international markets can be a tricky business, as we discovered last year when we assembled this collection of 20 titles that got lost in translation.
But if you want to descend to a whole new level of weirdness, you need to look beyond the official channels. Whether it's a pirated disc being hawked in the street or a bona fide copy resold in unofficial packaging, these are products where the normal quality standards simply do not apply.
Below we've rounded up 11 of the world's most bizarre bootleg DVD covers, featuring dodgy Photoshopping, garbled Babelfish-style synopses, and entire actors being accidentally dropped in from other movies or TV shows.
1. True Detective
God, True Detective was a great show. Remember that episode where Rust and Marty go to Vegas and live it up in faux-Paris before narrowly escaping an exploding building on the back of a phoenix?
No,...

After Planes flew into cinemas last summer and proved to be a crushing disappointment, it's probably fair to say that nobody is getting particularly hyped up for its sequel, Fire & Rescue. Perhaps these rock-bottom expectations are a good thing, because Planes 2 feels like a significant upgrade on its distinctly run-of-the-mill predecessor, which was initially going to be a direct-to-dvd release before it found its way onto the big screen.
Dane Cook returns to voice Dusty Crophopper, who this time around sees his racing career shot to pieces when he discovers a fault in his gearbox. This immediately creates a search for purpose and meaning more compelling than anything in Planes - what's more heartbreaking, chasing a dream or coming...

With "Maleficent" cleaning up, and live action reboots of "Cinderella" and "Beauty And The Beast" along the way, Disney continues to reach into the vault to exploit their classic titles for new cash as much as possible. And with "The Lion King" already making nearly a billion dollars worldwide at its time of release twenty years ago, Disney certainly already tried. They knocked out a direct-to-video sequel in 1998, "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride," and in 1995 there was the series "Timon & Pumbaa" which lasted five seasons. And now the mouse house is ready to bring Simba and co. back to the small screen. Sorta. The Wall Street Journal reveals that Disney Junior and Disney Channel will unveil "The Lion Guard" next year. The story will focus on Kion, Simba's son, who works with a group of animals to protect the jungle. “It’s kind of like ‘The Lion King’ meets ‘The Avengers,...

It ought to be easy to dislike Joss Whedon. He's an absurdly talented, extremely laid-back mega-geek who created some of the finest TV ever and now gets to play with all Marvel's money and makes little indie movies on the side just because he can... and he's also a musician. This isn't really news, since Whedon wrote the “Firefly” theme tune, the songs for the musical “Buffy” episode “Once More With Feeling,” the songs for “Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog” (and for the sing-along DVD commentary to that blog)—the man even wrote a song for the direct-to-video “The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride.” He ought to be really, really resent-able. But he just isn't. He's great. He's adorable. Even when he's writing not-great little indie movies like “In Your Eyes” (our review is here), we love him. Even when he also writes a merry-sad indie-pop track for the soundtrack, just to show off.

DVD or Blu-ray? Redbox or Netflix? Streaming? Whatever your poison, we've got the highlights and lowlights on the week's new releases -- plus exclusive previews from "Footloose" and "Immortals." Moviefone's Pick of the Week "The Skin I Live In" What's It About? After his wife is horribly burned in a car accident, a plastic surgeon (played by Antonio Banderas) dedicates his life to developing a miraculous new kind of skin -- that he tests on a helpless woman, held captive in his mansion. See It Because: The movie's director Pedro Almodovar is the only selling point you need. His totally unique style and prolific career can be daunting. If you're not familiar with his previous work ("Volver," "All About My Mother" among others), there's really no other way to prepare for his approach than to just dive in with one of his movies. 10. The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998)
The Lion King is often hailed as one of the best Disney movies of all time, so why did they have to ruin it with this awful direct-to-video sequel. The sequel centers around Simba's daughter Kiara who falls in love with Kovu, a male lion raised by Scar's followers. It's like a Romeo and Juliet with Lions. Nothing original, nothing exciting.

Steve Trenbirth, the dude who directed "The Jungle Book 2" and worked in the animation department for "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" and "The Return of Jafar," has a new gig lined up: a CGI indie flick.
Trenbirth will direct "Trouble Down Under," which is set in Australia and follows the clash between African meerkats and a gang of kangaroos after a wallaby shows up and creates trouble for everyone.
Findlay and Howard Jackson wrote the script, and the project will be developed on a $25 million budget. Cameron Daddo, Andrew Daddo, Ernie Dingo and Tony Bonner are part of the film's voice cast. (THR)...

Can you guess whose birthdays are today based on the following clues? He was an important character in the Harry Potter world but did not live past TOotP. Although he has many interesting credits to his name, he is best known for portraying Lieutenant Groves in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. She plays the role of Blair Cramer in One Life to Live - in over 300 episodes! He's done everything in his power to control the life of his ex-wife, Britney Spears! One of his very first movies was WarGames, a cult classic now. He's famous for many reasons, but perhaps you'll remember him best as Inspector Gadget? We're not quite sure what originally made her famous, but she's a household name, sort of like Madonna, but we call her Rosie. First up, Sirius Black of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Gary Oldman, 51, has quite a long and distinguished career.
