Early in their acquaintanceship, Owen (Liam Hemsworth) confesses to Katherine (Laura Dern) that he doesn’t really care for travel. “People always say it’s going to be this transformative experience. Go to a new, exotic place, meet the new, exotic you,” he says. “But you get there and you’re not new or exotic. You’re just you.”
Lonely Planet being what it is, Owen will of course be proven wrong. This trip that they’re on in Morocco, really will change their lives, specifically by tossing them into a whirlwind courtship. But if the Netflix romance depicts a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, the experience of actually watching it is decidedly more mundane. Neither dull enough to be painful nor fun enough to be engaging, it’s simply too bland to make much of an impression at all.

Filming has begun in Scotland on Big Beach’s adaptation of Borges And Me starring Fionn Whitehead, Luis Gnecco, and Alan Cumming.
Marc Turtletaub directs from a screenplay by Oren Moverman in which the memoir’s author Jay Parini finds himself stuck in a Morris Minor chauffeuring the brilliant, blind Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges through Scotland in 1970.
As a young student, Parini harbours dreams of becoming a writer and struggles to make sense of the 70-year-old, irrepressible Borges, until events take a surreal turn, leading the men to a place where they find common ground. The cast includes Peter Mullan and Harriet Sansom Harris.

Gwyneth Paltrow is making her return to the big screen for the first time in five years. The “Shakespeare in Love” Oscar winner will join Timothée Chalamet in “Marty Supreme,” a new film for A24 about a ping pong champion, directed by Josh Safdie.
Since reprising her role as Pepper Potts in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” Paltrow has somewhat stepped away from Hollywood (she also appeared in the series “The Politician” in 2020), saying she doesn’t miss screen acting and had a desire to one day do a Broadway play.
She did, however, joke that if anyone could get her back to acting, it would be Robert Downey Jr., her “Iron Man” co-star. Coincidentally, Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as mega villain Doctor Doom — though it’s not as if Paltrow has ever been super aware of the goings on of the MCU.

After a few years away from the big screen, Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love) is back, as we’ve learned that she’s set to star opposite Timothée Chalamet in A24’s new film Marty Supreme directed by Josh Safdie.
The project will feature her first substantial film role since Avengers: Endgame back in 2019.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the pic has been reported as being loosely inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman. At the same time, sources close to the production stress that it’s a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic. It’s unclear for the moment who Paltrow will be playing.
Safdie and Ronald Bronstein penned the script and will produce alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24.

Fandango Sales has boarded essay documentary “Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari,” which plays in the out of competition section of the Venice Film Festival. The film, written and directed by Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti, has debuted its teaser.
“Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari,” which is described as “a reflection on the relationship between humans and nature that exists beyond our impact on it,” is divided into three acts, dealing with animals, plants and stones, respectively.
“Our film is a tribute to the ‘unknown’ and in some ways alien world of animals, plants and stones, which we too often take for granted, but with which we should actually be in constant dialogue since it constitutes the essential part of our existence on Planet Earth,” according to a statement.
“The acts are closely interconnected because they create a unique dramaturgical development through three different staging devices.”

In the third episode of the Starz limited series “Mary & George,” Julianne Moore’s Mary, Countess of Buckingham, who is hell-bent on amassing power among the royal ranks, makes her first visit to the court of King James I (Tony Curran). The five-time Academy Award winner told Vanity Fair that series “Disclaimer” is the most “overtly narrative” project he’s worked on to date. “Disclaimer,” which will premiere October 11, stars Cate Blanchett as an acclaimed journalist whose own secrets are brought to light when a novel mirroring a past indiscretion is published. Cuarón writes, directs, and executive produces the series which is based on Renée Knight’s bestselling novel. The show was announced in 2021 and is Cuarón’s first TV series since his short-lived 2014 NBC show “Believe.”

The off-Broadway comedic hit Oh, Mary! is moving to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre starting June 26, and, while it’s gaining a bigger platform, Cole Escola, the show’s star and creator, wants to keep the zany hit show pretty much as is.
“It’s going to be bigger, better, bolder …” Escola says, before dropping the act. “It’s going to be exactly the same … we don’t want to spoil the recipe.”
That recipe saw the play — which had its world premiere at the Lucille Lortel Theatre last winter — sell out and extend twice. Given that the play follows a reimagined Mary Todd Lincoln, depicting her as a petulant wannabe cabaret star with a predilection for booze and, in its absence, paint thinner, the warm reception wasn’t necessarily a given. It even drew praise from Lincoln director Steven Spielberg, Sally Field (who played Mary in the movie) and screenwriter Tony Kushner,...

“It’s helped me to trust that even on my not amazing days, or even on my greatest days, that either way, the story is being communicated,” reflects Brody Grant on how receiving a Tony nomination for his performance in “The Outsiders” has affected him. The actor makes his Broadway debut in the role of Ponyboy in the new original musical based on the famous S. E. Hinton novel of the same name from 1967. The recognition has helped him “silence” some of his self-doubt and says it’s “a gift, because it’s great source material.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Even though Grant performed in the La Jolla production of the show back in 2023 and has settled into the Broadway run, he still revisits Hinton’s original novel every day. “Every time I crack open that book, I find something that I haven’t found before, it’s...

“I was completely shocked,” shares Justin Levine about how he felt on the morning of Tony Awards nominations when he heard his name called not once or twice but three times for his work on the new musical “The Outsiders.” The multi-hyphenate earned recognition for his contributions to the book by Adam Rapp, his and Jamestown Revival’s score and his and Matt Hinkley’s orchestrations. He and the Jamestown Revival guys Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance watched the announcement together and were “running around like maniacs” in celebration. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

DC Studios has cast Superman and Supergirl, leaving us to wonder who's next. Lanterns appears to be taking shape, while Booster Gold is also said to be close to starting production (rumour has it the title character has secretly been cast).
While we strongly recommend taking the following with a pinch of salt given the source, Film Front claims to have learned who the three frontrunners are to play the Dcu's Booster Gold.
Bigger stories than this have been broken by smaller outlets in the past, and that's why we're not completely dismissing the story!
According to the site, Dylan Playfair, Fionn Whitehead, and Patrick Schwarzenegger are all screen-testing for the role of Booster. It's unclear which of them has potentially been cast or even whether any of them are still in the running.

For me, the news that Alfonso Cuarón was helming "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was exciting. At the time, I only knew him for directing the thoroughly enchanting and visually splendiferous 1995 film version of "A Little Princess." As for everyone else? They were trying to make heads or tails of why the guy behind the indubitably erotic 2001 Mexican road trip drama "Y tu mamá también" had been hired by Warner Bros. to work on its golden goose (which really needs to cut ties with its transphobic creator already).
Cuarón was as baffled as anyone else when WB approached him. "I was confused because it was completely not on my radar," he explained to Total Film. "A Little Princess," while critically well-received, had barely made a dent at the box office, while the director's 1998 mid-budget modern-set retelling of Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" was an outright flop. However, this proved...

James Cameron has seldom been more vocal about his appreciation for an artist than when he was completely bowled over by Bernard Hill’s role in Titanic. For a director as esteemed as Cameron, there must be very few things that can still hold that effect on him, however, Titanic still manages to churn out such rare and treasured moments at a steady pace.

Despite playing only a minor role in the film, the subtlety of Bernard Hill’s powerhouse performance in the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio film held the capacity to move the director of the $2.26 billion romantic tragedy. As such, it was only right that Cameron expressed his gratitude and privilege after witnessing the understated actor’s process at work.

Bernard Hill, the actor whose memorable tones and rugged visage brought to life a variety of fantastic performances, has died. He was 79.
Born in Manchester in 1944, Hill quickly gravitated towards stage work before taking the chance to make the jump to film and TV. Yet his early career was marked by few standout roles, mostly relegated to brief appearances on the likes of I, Claudius and the BBC's Tom Stoppard adaptation Professional Foul.
Still, he found one of the first parts that would define his career in Alan Bleasdale's The Black Stuff, a one-off TV play in 1980 that the writer would expand into classic comedy drama Boys From The Blackstuff. Hill scored a BAFTA nomination for his performance as the tragic, yet dimly self-aware Yosser.

“The thing that pulled me the most is the authenticity with which the writer Susie Hinton explores what it feels like to be a teenager,” reflects Danya Taymor on what resonates with her about the 1967 novel “The Outsiders.” The popular book was adapted for the screen by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983 and has now come to the stage as a musical. The director finds the original work so powerful because the novelist was able to capture the experience of adolescence “without pulling any punches, without trying to sugarcoat it in a way that dove into my heart and talked to the 14-year-old inside me.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. Following the opening of new musical “The Outsiders” on Broadway on April 11, we rack our brains about what other shows are likely to earn nominations in the top category of Best Musical, including frontrunners “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and others.
Sam Eckmann: Hi David! I can’t believe we are sitting roughly two weeks out from Tony nominations and we still have no idea what the Best Musical race is going to look like. Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Carey Mulligan comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” Variety can confirm exclusively.
They will release the film in the U.S. while Universal Pictures International is handling global distribution.
The film, which was previously titled “One For The Money,” is directed by James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions (“Philomena”).
The screenplay was written by Tom Basden (“After Life”) and Tim Key (“Great Expectations”), who also star in the film alongside Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).
“The Ballad of Wallis Island” tells the story of Charles (played by Key), an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favorite musical duo Mortimer-McGwyer (Mulligan and Basden) despite the fact they split up many years ago. Making things even more awkward, the musicians – Nell Mortimer and Herb McGwyer — were also once romantically involved with each other a la Sonny and Cher.

“Oppenheimer” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema won Feature Film at the 38th ASC Awards, March 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Oscar favorite beat the other four Oscar nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” Poor Things,” and “El Conde”.
This marked van Hoytema’s first ASC win after three nominations (including “Dunkirk” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and positions the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer for his first Oscar win. Significantly, “Oppenheimer” represents the culmination of his experimental IMAX collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. The duo achieved a new kind of intimate spectacle with this psychological thriller about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy), the “father of the atomic bomb.” Van Hoytema used the large-format IMAX camera to explore the landscape of faces; namely, Oppenheimer’s in color from his perspective and Salieri-like adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss’ (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white from his.

There’s nothing IndieWire loves more than directors talking about their favorite movies. So, of course, we took notice when, in late 2023, Turner Classic Movies started looping in directors to share their favorites from TCM’s lineup each month: Steven Spielberg’s TCM picks kicked things off, then Martin Scorsese waxed rhapsodic about “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” and Guillermo del Toro gushed about the greatness of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion.”
Now Chris Columbus is sharing his own TCM picks, along with some especially insightful anecdotes. Watch the video above.
Columbus starts off sharing his love of “Singin’ in the Rain”: “An amazing, almost flawless movie. You can say that about very few movies. I showed ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ to my 16-month-old granddaughter who was absolutely absorbed in the musical numbers. Moreso than any Disney animated films. I go back to it once or twice a year.
