Things are getting personal on the set of CBS’ “Elsbeth.” The Eye network was set to announce Sunday that Emmy-winning actor Michael Emerson — the husband of “Elsbeth” star Carrie Preston — will join the show in a recurring role this season.
The news was scheduled to be revealed during the “Elsbeth” panel at New York Comic-Con, as moderated by series guest star Laura Benanti. As announced during the panel, Emerson will join in a recurring role starting with the show’s Dec. 12 episode.
The “Lost” and “Person of Interest” star will appear as Judge Milton Crawford, described as a “haughty, soft-spoken and bespectacled man from an old New England family of public servants who sees his place in the nation’s elite as a birthright.” He’ll serve as a foil to Elsbeth Tascioni, the character played by Preston.
The couple has appeared on camera before in projects including “Person of Interest.

In 2008, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Back To You, co-created/executive produced by Steve Levitan, was canceled by Fox, the broadcast network then-aligned with Levitan’s longtime studio home, 20th Television. Shortly thereafter, another comedy co-created/executive produced by Levitan, Modern Family, was sold to a rival network, ABC, where it went to series and became an instant hit.
In 2023, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Reboot, created by Levitan, was canceled by Hulu, the streamer aligned with his studio 20th TV. In both cases, Levitan had been vocal in his displeasure over the cancellations, directing it at the network/platform: More bluntly about Back To You, “I have sworn off the Fox network.

I love a good twist. Some of my favorite TV shows of all time are chock-full of them. When the twisty ending of Kathy Bates‘ new “Matlock” pilot was revealed, I jumped out of my chair and immediately thought, “Yep, this is my new show.” But what are its awards chances?
For those that haven’t yet seen it, beware of spoilers in this article. Go and watch the first episode of “Matlock” right now at CBS and/or Paramount+ before continuing on. You have been warned!
The pilot, which first debuted on September 22 and was re-aired on October 10, begins with Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Bates) maneuvering her way into a job at the prestigious law firm of Jacobson & Moore. That’s where she meets junior partner Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), senior partner Julian (Jason Ritter), novice associates Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis), and managing partner Senior (Beau Bridges). In record time,...

Nicholas Pryor, whose nearly seven-decade acting career included hundreds of episodes of soap operas, playing Tom Cruise’s dad in Risky Business and Kathleen Robertson’s dad on Beverly Hills, 90210, died October 7. He was 89.
Fellow actor Jon Lindstrom announced the news on social media, saying in part: “Nick was an Actor’s actor, and an exceptional friend. … He was a mentor, a sounding board, a trusted confidant, and even a father-figure beyond, yes, playing my own father on #Gh and #PortCharles.” See his full post below.
Pryor racked up nearly 175 screen credits and half-dozen more on Broadway. After getting his screen start guesting on such 1950s and early ’60s TV series as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Doctors, he played Tom Baxter in more than 75 episodes of the NBC daytime drama Another World. That led to a starring role on The Nurses, a 1965-67 continuation of CBS’ The Nurses, which...

A quarter century ago, Happy Days fans probably bugged out when their beloved Henry Winkler played a dentist with a cockroach fetish in a September 1999 episode of ABC’s The Practice. But good luck finding that episode now. David E. Kelley’s hit legal drama, the finale of which turned 20 this year, isn’t streaming anywhere — after Hulu dropped it last September — meaning viewers can’t revisit that case or any of the other bizarre plot lines below. Here are our picks for The Practice’s wildest cases — and we’ve given each a title that might sound familiar! Monkey Business In Season 2’s “Sex, Lies and Monkeys,” Jimmy (Michael Badalucco) defends a man who was fired because his body hair reminded his boss of a primate’s. Example dialogue: “It was hard for me to get other work ’cause of what he said. Hard for me to even go on interviews,...

As “Reasonable Doubt’s” Jax Stewart becomes the newest Black woman lawyer to grace our television screens, TheWrap wanted to take a trip down memory lane by listing the most iconic Black woman TV lawyers our time.
For fans, these roles may just be the characters we show up to watch in our favorite shows weekly, but for the actresses that play them and the writers that write them, their existence has impacted on-screen representation for Black women as well as the careers of Black Hollywood actresses.
That rings true for Kerry Washington’s role in “Scandal.” While we primarily recognize Olivia Pope as a crisis manager in the series, she was a former lawyer who often exhibited those tactics from her legal career. Until Washington signed on for the role — which ABC originally suggested a non-Black actress take — there hadn’t been a drama series with a leading Black woman on TV for 37 years.

Throughout his career spanning three decades, he’s crafted films that illuminate the quirky dilemmas and interactions of everyday people. In Rejtman’s skilled hands, ordinary lives become a showcase for both laughter and melancholy introspection.
His latest film, The Practice, focuses on Gustavo, a yoga instructor living in Chile who’s recently separated from his wife Vanesa. As Gustavo struggles to find stability in the aftermath of divorce, a string of bizarre mishaps piles even more chaos onto his life. When an earthquake causes an accident at his class, a knee injury waylays his teaching, and a suspected theft rattles his studio, it’s clear the universe has no sympathy for Gustavo’s fragility.

Mubi has unveiled next month’s streaming lineup, including an exciting lineup of notable new releases: Bertrand Bonello’s Coma (along with Nocturama), Julia Loktev’s The Loneliest Planet (as her newest film premieres at the New York Film Festival), Martin Rejtman’s The Practice alongside his previous features, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, and more.
As David Katz said in his review from 2022’s Berlinale, “Coma is anything but a navel-gazing work, and more one of imaginative empathy. It is not Being Bertrand Bonello, but addressed to and concerning a person of a far-removed generation and gender: his teenage daughter Anna. Some amusing early interactions with pop culture, especially music, come from this cross-generational conversation: ‘turn that garbage off’ et al. But Bonello looks at the Zoomer state of mind, as he does for much else of importance, and has cutting, perceptive and troubling things to say.”

The West Wing’s President Bartlet and his staff reunited at the Emmys.
The not-so-secret reunion saw Martin Sheen, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney and Richard Schiff appear in a replica of the Oval Office before presenting best drama series.
Sheen opened by saying, “From 1999 to 2006 I had the honor of playing the President of the United States on an extraordinary series created by Aaron Sorkin and produced by John Wells.”
“The name of that series was The West Wing, and we all had the honor of serving your administration,” added Hill.
Janney said, “It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago, Aaron and the writers actually had to use their imaginations to create interesting plot lines for The West Wing.”
Schiff replied, “Unlike today, where story lines can be plucked right off the news, storylines that writers would have deemed a bit far-fetched, if not utterly ridiculous 25 years ago.

For the first time since 2006, every current Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy nominee is new to the category. The seemingly unflappable leader of the pack is general first-timer Néstor Carbonell of “Shōgun,” whose expected victory could be one of 22 for the freshman series, the 1980 limited version of which took three out of a possible 12 TV academy prizes.
Carbonell’s strongest competitor is John Turturro (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), who has an advantage in this race in that he won the corresponding comedy award for “Monk” two decades ago. Also in the running are former limited series supporting nominees Paul Dano (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”) as well as Emmys newcomer Tracy Letts, whose “Winning Time” bid came as a surprise to most predictors.
In order to determine whether Carbonell truly has this contest sewn up, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure...

I laugh when I hear people talk about how “The Bear” is a sure thing winner for Best Comedy Series and that it’s such a lock nothing whatsoever can derail it. Ha! Ha I say! Oh, it’s naturally the heavy favorite with its 23 nominations and has remained the overwhelming frontrunner clear through Emmy season, all right. In the Gold Derby combined Emmy odds, it’s running away with this race. The same is true of ““Shōgun” for drama after its giant haul of 25 Emmy bids. And nothing can beat “Baby Reindeer” for Best Limited Series, right? Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer”) is a shoo-in for limited supporting actress, isn’t she? And no one could possibly beat Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Bear”) for comedy guest actress – could they?
But if Emmy history has taught us anything, it’s that upsets happen, even when it comes to shows and people considered locks.

Tobe Hooper's 1985 sci-fi vampire film "Lifeforce" is one of the stranger genre exercises of its era. It was produced by the Cannon Group, an exploitation movie house founded in Israel by B-movie luminaries Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, so it comes with a schlocky imprimatur right out of the gate. "Lifeforce" also has plenty of traditionally schlocky elements, including space vampires, amazing monster effects (it has one of the best practical living corpses in film history), and extensive nudity. The first detail many may remember from "Lifeforce" is the vision of actor Mathilda May wandering around a space laboratory without a stitch of clothing.
The rules of the space vampires in "Lifeforce" aren't entirely clear, as Texan director Hooper was more interested in a sense of dread than plot clarity. It seems that the space vampires can not only shape-shift, but also subsist by "drinking" lightning-light energy out of the faces of their victims.

Love it or hate it, "Sanford and Son" is one of the most groundbreaking American sitcoms of all time. The NBC series about a widowed get-rich-quick schemer (Redd Foxx) living in Los Angeles' Watts neighborhood with his adult son (Demond Wilson) was an undeniable hit during its run. It ushered in a Golden Age of Black family sitcoms thanks to dynamic performances, frank dialogue written from a working-class Black perspective, and its often uproarious scripts. It was such a ratings juggernaut that it's often credited for killing off its much more sanitized competition, "The Brady Bunch."
"It was a groundbreaking series," Eric Deggans wrote in a series retrospective for the official Emmys website, noting that "Before 'Good Times' and 'The Jeffersons' would make TV history with powerful stories focused on Black families, 'Sanford and Son' would explore the prickly relationship between a middle-aged Black man and his son.

James Spader is reportedly set to return as Ultron in the upcoming MCU series Vision Quest. Last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Spader’s voice and mo-cap work for the character earned critical acclaim and he has been regarded as one of the best antagonists of the franchise.
Spader has reportedly only played two roles since 2015, one being Ultron and the other being his regular role as Raymond Reddington in The Blacklist. While Reddington is iconic for all sorts of reasons, Spader’s role as Robert California in The Office only a few years before remains a classic.

Nearly 10 years after voicing the titular villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron, James Spader is reprising the iconic role for Marvel’s upcoming WandaVision follow-up series on Disney+, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Paul Bettany is set to return for the Vision-centric series, which is on track for a 2026 release. It will reportedly take place after the events of WandaVision, following White Vision as he “presumably explores his new purpose in life.” Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard) is developing the series.

Ultron will return.
James Spader is set to reprise his role of the villainous artificial intelligence from 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Vision series with Paul Bettany.
Terry Matalas (“Star Trek: Picard”) will serve as executive producer and showrunner of the untitled series, which is scheduled to debut in 2026. Although Vision technically died in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” he was resurrected twice in the 2021’s series “WandaVision,” first as a spectral creation made (and then unmade) by magic, and again as a ghost white robot without any memories from his past.
It’ll prove troublesome for Vision when Ultron returns, since the characters have a longstanding history. Ultron created Vision’s original synthetic body as the permanent home for his AI, but the Avengers intercepted it and instead placed Tony Stark’s AI assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. inside, creating Vision. At the end of “Age of Ultron,...

Following a group of socially awkward scientists, Chuck Lorre’s The Big Bang Theory captured widespread attention and soon became a household name. While fans globally continued to enjoy the show and its characters, viewers in China faced a setback in 2014 when the country’s television regulator imposed an unexplained ban on the sitcom.

Exclusive: After 12 years at Sony Pictures Television, The Good Doctor creator David Shore is moving shop to 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios, with a premium overall deal. Under the three-year pact, which starts in November when his most recent Sony TV overall deal is up, Shore will develop, write and executive produce original series for 20th Television targeting linear networks and streamers, with a focus on Disney Entertainment Television platforms.
Shore has had only two studio homes for the past two decades. He spent eight years at Universal Television, where he created, executive produced and showran hit medical drama House before moving to Sony TV shortly after that series ended its eight-season run on Fox in 2012. With his followup hit medical drama series, ABC/Sony TV’s The Good Doctor, similarly coming to an end this year after seven seasons, Shore is making a change.

Jennifer Aniston won Best Comedy Actress at the 2002 Emmys for the hit laffer “Friends.” Twenty-two years later, she could well pick up an Emmy bookend by winning Best Drama Actress for her starring role as Alex Levy in the acclaimed Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show.” Her rival nominees are: Anna Sawai (“Shōgun”), Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”), Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), Carrie Coon (“The Gilded Age”), and her “The Morning Show” co-star Reese Witherspoon.
Aniston is currently in third place in our odds chart with both Sawai and Staunton ahead of her. Sawai is hoping to win for the first season of “Shōgun,” and she could, theoretically, get taken along for the ride in a “Shōgun” sweep (we expect “Shōgun” to win Best Drama Series). Meanwhile, Staunton is hoping to prevail for the final season of “The Crown” — perhaps voters will get sentimental and want to bid farewell to the lauded show.

This year’s Emmy nominees for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series are a mix of former winners and first-time nominees — and if you’re on The Morning Show or The Crown, there’s a pretty good chance you’re nominated.
Those two shows represent six of the seven nominees in this category, which is becoming a pattern lately: Last year, The White Lotus grabbed five of the eight slots, including one for winner Jennifer Coolidge. The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki is the only repeat nominee from last year, back again for her work as Princess Diana in the sixth and final season.

Based on the merits of its first two seasons, Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” was nominated for three of the four regular drama series acting Emmys, with its lone elusive category having been the supporting female one. Now, following its submission of seven featured ladies on the initial 2024 Emmy ballot, it has simultaneously scored a whopping four Best Drama Supporting Actress mentions, joining only three other series that have done the same or better.
The supporting actresses representing “The Morning Show” on this year’s final Emmy ballot are Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, and Holland Taylor. Only Pittman has been part of the cast since the show’s inception, as Lee and Taylor first appeared in season two and Beharie was just added ahead of season three. “Overnight!” That’s what Holland Taylor infamously shouted 25 years ago when she won her first career Emmy Award in Best Drama Supporting Actress for her guest-starring role as judge Roberta Kittleson on “The Practice.” (Watch the Emmy flashback video below.)
Can the esteemed actress now claim an Emmy bookend for playing Uba board chair Cybil Reynolds on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show”? She’s competing yet again in the Best Drama Supporting Actress race and, just like in 1999, she’s billed as a guest star as opposed to a series regular, so Emmy history could repeat itself.
Taylor has submitted the episode “White Noise” to Emmy judges for this 2024 contest, in which Cybil’s career hangs in the balance when one of her old racist emails resurfaces. Cybil agrees to a damage control interview on the A.M. news program with Black journalist Chris Hunter (Nicole Beharie), but it...

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Holland Taylor is entering “The Morning Show” episode “White Noise” as her 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Supporting Actress. “White Noise” debuted on September 20, 2023, and is the third episode of the Apple TV+ drama’s third season.
In “White Noise,” Uba board chair Cybil Richards (Taylor) is thrown onto the hot seat when an old racist email she wrote resurfaces. In an attempt to salvage her legacy, Cybil agrees to an interview with Chris Hunter (fellow 2024 Emmy nominee Nicole Beharie) – but it goes so poorly that Cybil’s fate is ultimately sealed. The episode was written by Joshua Allen and directed by Thomas Carter.
Taylor is a nine-time Emmy Award nominee and won Best Drama Supporting Actress in 1999 for “The Practice.” For this 2024 contest, Taylor is competing against Christine Baranski (“The Gilded Age”), Beharie, Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), Greta Lee (“The Morning Show...

By the time 1999 rolled around, David E. Kelley had already more than proven his bonafides as a megaproducer and an Emmy dynamo nearly without peer. He had already won five statuettes as a producer for Best Drama Series – three for “L.A. Law” and two more for “Picket Fences” (1993 and ’94) – as well as another pair for writing Emmys for “L.A. Law” (’90 and ’91). Oh, and there was also a 1998 Best Drama win for “The Practice,” giving him six trophies for top series and eight Emmys overall. Not too shabby. In fact, his run of winning Best Drama five times in six years had never happened. The closest anyone came was Kelley’s mentor Steven Bochco’s run of four straight for “Hill Street Blues” in the early 1980s.
And still, even with all of that, the best was yet to come for Kelley.
In ’99, the producer was coming off his “Practice” win...

Between Despicable Me 4 (July 3), Twisters (July 19), and Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26), there aren’t going to be too many open screens in theaters this month. So marketing becomes a huge piece of the puzzle as far as standing out and turning heads goes. This is especially true since all three of those movies stuck to the status quo of jokey, bland Photoshop work.

Over the weekend, my phone blew up with texts from TV comedy writers who were in the middle of watching the latest season of The Bear. Some were enjoying the new episodes, others were frustrated by them, but not one person said this story of toxic workplaces, addiction and mental illness, and ruinous personal relationships was a barrel of laughs — this despite the fact that FX, Hulu, and Emmy voters everywhere continue to consider it a comedy. Having trouble predicting who will win Best Drama Guest Actor at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”). Attorney-turned-selling novelist Scott Turow made the cover of Time magazine the summer of 1990 describing him as the “Bard of the Litigious Age.” And 34 years later, the 75-year-old still is. Over the past four decades, Turow has written 13 works of fiction which have been translated into 40 languages and have sold more than 30 million copies. Several have been transformed into miniseries and TV movies.
In fact, Hollywood filmmakers were salivating in 1987 for the rights to Turow’s first novel, “Presumed Innocent,” a clever, sexy murder mystery with twists and turns that would baffle even Columbo, about a prosecutor accused of murdering the attractive colleague with whom he had been romantically involved “It began a sort of Hollywood frenzy,” Turow told me in a 1992 L.A. Times interview. “It was one weekend’s madness.” And for good reason, the novel spent 44 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list and another five months on the paperback charts.

Easton, who has played at least three other characters on the series during his more than 10-year run, announced his exit on Instagram early Wednesday morning. He captioned the post, “Thank you for your kindness. My heart is filled with love and gratitude. #gh #goodbye.”
In a video message accompanying the post, Easton said, “I’ve always been partial to the Irish goodbye. That’s where you leave the party without actually telling anyone you’re gone. But I thought you all deserve better, so I just want to let you know that I just filmed my final scenes here at ‘General Hospital.’”
“I’ve loved every minute that I’ve been here,” continued Easton. “I want to thank the entire cast and crew for allowing me to share their stage this past 10 years. Most importantly, I want to thank all of...

As a screenwriter, David E. Kelley is used to injecting social commentary into his material — not unlike the way the ancient Greeks entered the city of Troy. But when the creator of shows like The Practice, Big Little Lies and Ally McBeal made his foray into documentary filmmaking – with the ocean sustainability-themed Hope in the Water — the Trojan Horse method of educating was no longer applicable. “If you would leave me to my devices, I probably would’ve had a floating dead body, to talk about the biosecurity risk of people being beheaded in our oceans, but it was not going to be this kind of series,” jokes the prolific producer. “I didn’t proffer that idea. They didn’t ask for it – maybe because they were worried I might suggest something like that.”

Danielle Savre from Station 19 quickly found a new job.
Yes, that first sentence is heavy with the puns.
Danielle starred as firefighter Maya Bishop on Station 19 for years.
Her character was an important one to the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, not just for the show, but because of the relationship her character had.
Maya is the current captain and former lieutenant of Station 19 of the Seattle Fire Department.
Maya’s wife (Carina DeLuca-Bishop) popped by Station 19 but should return to Grey’s Anatomy in the fall. It led to rumors that Maya could also appear on Grey’s Anatomy.
That doesn’t appear to be in the cards.
Danielle Savre to star on NBC’s Found
Found is the show where Danielle will appear this fall. Her role is mysterious, so we may have to wait for further details.

Who's who on FBI: Most Wanted?
The oldest spinoff of the FBI series features a small but dedicated team of special agents determined to bring the most violent criminals to justice.
This show has been renewed for a sixth season, so the summer hiatus is a great time to dive into the FBI: Most Wanted cast and character guide and get to know who these people are.
A Small Cast, But A Big Change
Before getting into the cast guide, you should know that FBI: Most Wanted will rotate cast members during Season 6. This cost-saving measure means that different characters will be featured on each episode, with some missing each time.
This will impact a series like FBI: Most Wanted, which only has five regulars, far more than shows with big casts, as character disappearances will be noticeable.
