Jinkies indeed! After two divisive seasons, Max won’t be renewing Mindy Kaling’s adult animated series Velma for another season. The show, starring Kaling as the voice of Velma Dinkley, lasted for two seasons before Max ripped off its mask, revealing a cancelation notice where a mustache-twirling villain’s head should be. The cancelation of Velma hits hard for fans of the series who genuinely enjoy Kaling’s unique spin on the Scooby gang and their darkly-themed misadventures.
“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” Max said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”

If not for "Breaking Bad," then Albuquerque, New Mexico would still be most famous in popular culture as the site of Bugs Bunny's wrong turns. If you've been sleeping comfortably under a rock, "Breaking Bad" centers on Albuquerque science teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston), who puts his chemistry skills to use cooking meth after he's diagnosed with cancer. With the show set in the U.S. southwest, the story made semi-frequent dips into Mexico itself and many of the series' criminal subplots and characters had ties to fictional drug cartels.
With a 500,000+ population, Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico. This is definitely a big fish in a small pond situation; the state has a wide-spreading land area but a sparse population of about 2 million. (It ranks 37th out of 50 in population for all U.S. states.) Why set a television series there compared to more famous regional neighbors like Dallas,...

Imagine Bugs Bunny dribbling down the basketball court, with Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam scrambling to keep up. Or Taz and Road Runner in a heated soccer match, zipping across the pitch in a colorfully chaotic blur. Looney Tunes: Wacky World of Sports brings these classic characters to life in a sports gameplay compilation featuring basketball, soccer, tennis, and golf.
Players can choose from favorites like Bugs, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig to compete in solo play or local multiplayer matches. Each sport captures the charming antics and slapstick hijinks unique to the Looney Tunes world. Whether triggering Acme-powered special moves in tennis or navigating dynamite-laden golf courses, players experience the zany humor and colorful craziness of their animated predecessors.
While the selection of activities may seem modest, the golf gameplay in particular emerged as a surprising highlight, with its balanced controls and creative course design managing to equal or even surpass prestigious competitors.

Second only to Mel Blanc himself, voice actor Jeff Bergman has voiced the most Looney Tunes characters over the longest stretch of time. He “officially” got the gig — the reason for those quotes will become clear below — in 1989 when Bugs, Daffy and the rest became teachers on Tiny Toon Adventures. He’s continued on through dozens of other projects like 1990’s Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue, 2011’s The Looney Tunes Show, 2015’s New Looney Tunes and last year’s Tiny Toons Looniversity reboot.
While he’s not the only person who’s voiced these characters since Blanc’s passing, he’s been among the most consistent. Which, of course, has steeped him in all sorts of Looney Tunes lore, as well as allowed him to make some of his own. Lore such as…

Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey cartoon, has fallen out of copyright. Enter Screamboat: a slasher flick set on a New York ferry. Will gory versions of Bugs Bunny, Popeye and Betty Boop be next?
This year, the legendary Disney short film Steamboat Willie, the first film to feature Mickey Mouse, entered the public domain. In theory, that means this version of Mickey Mouse now belongs to the people, who are free to share, reuse, sample, repurpose or perform works featuring him however they see fit, without fear of reprisal from Disney. Theoretically this could spark an entire organic folk revival of a character who played a part in all our childhoods.
In reality, though, things are a little different. Because in reality someone is going to make a cheap horror film about him. Variety has announced the existence of Screamboat, a film about some New Yorkers who go on...

Come, sit, and hear sad stories of what it was like to be a young British millennial nerd. The nineties were, in many ways, a dark age for British science fiction. Doctor Who was gone, apart from one Children in Need crossover with EastEnders – Dimensions in Time in 1993 – and an American co-produced movie simply called “Doctor Who” (which we would all pretend to hate while treasuring our VHS recording and commemorative Radio Times issue).
Over the pond, TV sci-fi was in the middle of a golden age, with three Star Trek series, Babylon 5, Farscape, The X-Files and Stargate Sg-1 only marking the tip of a science fictional iceberg. But British fans could only watch these episodes months or even years after the fact, particularly if they had only access to terrestrial television, and were forced to paw through magazines and websites for reviews and plot summaries to sate their hunger.

Starship Troopers has continued to remain a cult-classic sci-fi movie that features a group of teens who undergo rigorous training to prepare themselves to fight off gigantic bugs that are invading Earth. While the movie on its own is an underrated sci-fi project in the cinematic world, many would be surprised to know why an insect was particularly chosen to be a villain.

But, before diving into how Bugs initially got finalized as the movie’s antagonist, one must know that the movie’s development began as a separate project called, Bug Hunt at Outpost 7, written by Ed Neumeier. That was when the Bugs’ history originated!

As we have mentioned many times before, and particularly after the restrictions placed in the movie industry internationally due to Covid, short filmmaking has been experiencing a surge in all aspects, with the quantity increasing as much as the quality, to the point that, now, these films can actually be better than their feature counterparts. In Asia in particular, the 2023 has been utterly impressive in that regard, with the short titles of intense quality coming one after the other. 25 of those we collected in this particular list, which we feel is one of the most competitive and overall impressive among the plethora we publish every year.
Without further ado, here are the best Asian Short Films of 2023, in reverse order, although the order, particularly in the first 10, could easily be completely different. Some may have may have premiered in 2022, but since they mostly circulated in 2023, we decided to include them.

After Supernatural wrapped up its fifteen season run back in 2020, the franchise was supposed to live on through the prequel series The Winchesters… but then the show’s home network The CW was taken over by a new management team that came in with the intention of wiping the CW slate clean for the most part. The Winchesters was cancelled after one season, then couldn’t find a new home because it had to be shopped around during the writers strike, when networks and streamers were hesitant to make major pickup decisions. But maybe that’s not the end for Supernatural after all. During an appearance at the Creation Honolulu convention earlier this month, the show’s stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles implied there’s more Winchester action to come. Could we see a Supernatural season 16 someday?

Jamila Woods has shared her new album, Water Made Us, via Jagjaguwar. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
The title of Water Made Us references Toni Morrison, who once said, “All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” The album maintains Woods’ interest in Black feminism, but, as a result of being written in the midst of quarantine, is more self-reflective than her past works.
“Water Made Us feels like the most personal and vulnerable piece of art I’ve ever made. I love creating from source material, diving deep into a subject and extrapolating from what I discover,” Woods said in a statement. “We sat in the house for two years and I became my own source material. With Water Made Us, Jamila Woods takes us on a radically honest journey through the complexities of love. The opening track, “Bugs,” is a patient slow burn about not letting the little things hinder one’s love for their partner. “It bugs me, but I do it for ya,” the Chicago-based singer-songwriter admits during the chorus. That selfless sentiment defines the album’s identity early on, with “Bugs” ending with a broader evocation of embracing the world’s imperfections: “Don’t kill this bug/Slide a little paper under this glass/Let a few bugs live.”
Songs like “Tiny Garden” and “Practice” grapple with building a strong foundation for relationships, while “Send a Dove,” “Wreckage Room,” and “Thermostat” find Woods attempting to pick up the pieces in the wake of those relationships crumbling. “Send a Dove” begins with a breezy rhythm that takes a dramatic turn toward the somber at the halfway point,...

It's been just over 20 years, but the "Fast and Furious" saga is running out of road, and "Fast X" marks the beginning of the end. After going from small scale robberies to international espionage and even heading to space, there are not many other places to go, so "Fast X" involves a very "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" plot that finds the family on the run from their biggest threats yet -- The Agency that once shielded them, and also a live-action gender-fluid Bugs Bunny in the form of Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes.
Dante is the best villain the "Fast and Furious" franchise has got to date, and the best part of the movie. He is not just another guy who wants to rule the world, but one deeply obsessed with the events of "Fast Five," one who takes things personally and will stop at nothing until he destroys Dom and everything he loves.

To hear Jake McDorman describe his first time reading a scene from “Mrs. Davis” is akin to watching the show itself. “You’re like, ‘I think it’s funny. I think it can be funny. Or maybe I’m completely misinterpreting this and it’s a drama. I don’t know,” McDorman tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview.
But as McDorman and viewers have found out, the new Peacock drama “Mrs. Davis” is all of that and more: it’s a serious drama with room for slapstick comedy, barbed banter, and swooning romance that’s also about technology and religion and the very nature of humanity. Jonathan Barker, a producer and executive who co-founded the giant-screen producer-distributor Sk Films and was its CEO, died Thursday morning of cancer in Toronto. He was 67.
Also a board member of the Giant Screen Cinema Association, Barker launched Sk Films two decades ago with Bob Kerr, who had co-founded Imax Corp in 1968. Sk went on to produce more than a dozen projects that combine human drama and natural history discoveries. Among them was the eco-adventure series The Water Brothers, which Barker executive produced and starred his environmentalist sons Alex and Tyler.
Other titles produced and/or distirubted by Sk Films include the Oscar-shortlisted 2003 docu short Bugs! and 2012’s Flight of the Butterflies, the only film to sweep the Gsca Awards. Barker was executive producer of those films, along with other Sk titles such as 1997’s Mission to Mir, 2009’s Journey to Mecca and its 2010 follow-up Roads to Mecca, and this year’s Backyard Wilderness.

Warner Bros Animation is creating a new series of short-form cartoons based on the studio’s iconic Looney Tunes Cartoons franchise featuring the likes of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the gang that will harken to the original Looney Tunes theatrical shorts. The studio said today multiple artists will produce 1-6 minute shorts “written” and drawn by the cartoonists allowing their own personality and style to come through.
The plan is to produce 1,000 minutes each season, with the content to be distributed across multiple platforms including digital, mobile and broadcast.
“The Looney Tunes are one of the most beloved group of animated characters in the world,” said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros Animation and Warner Digital Series. “Looney Tunes Cartoons places these characters into the hands of some of the best artists in the business and into an animated shorts format that will remind many of the time when...

Arguably, British tech ensemble Bugs paved the way for the likes of Spooks, Sherlock, Torchwood and more...
It feels a long time ago that watching Saturday night TV with the family was the norm, but back in the 1990s, millions crowded around the box for the likes of Noel's House Party, Due South, The Generation Game, and of course, Bugs. The latter ran for four series between 1995 and 1999 and arguably holds the distinction of being embryonic of later, more intensive, tech-heavy UK shows including Spooks and Sherlock.

Michael Jordan proves here that Dennis Rodman is not the only Looney Tune he can play with.
Taking the cinematic court with Warner Bros.' vaunted lineup of Looney Tune characters, including Bugs, Daffy, Elmer et al., Jordan and his new cartoon teammates scores some fast-breaking laughs in this animation/live action teaming.

Spoilers: here are our viewing notes for Doctor Who series 9 episode 1, The Magician's Apprentice. There's a lot to spot...

Which is fortunate because, as you might expect, The Magician’s Apprentice contained more than its fair share of these. Here are the ones we found; if you noticed something we haven’t, feel free to add it in the comments!

We pay tribute to Brian Clemens, a screenwriter and producer whose work lit up 1970s cult TV and beyond...
Brian Clemens, who died earlier this week aged 83, was a highly respected screenwriter and producer both for TV and Film. He will chiefly be remembered for his work on The Avengers, The New Avengers and The Professionals but his credits were numerous and encapsulated a real golden age of cult, escapist television from the 1950s onwards.
Clemens was born in Croydon in July 1931. He spent his National Service as a Weapons Training Instructor. After spending time as a copywriter, he established himself as a scriptwriter - sometimes using the pseudonym "Tony O'Grady" - O'Grady being his mother's maiden name. He received his first commission from the BBC at the age of 24 - a thriller called Valid For Single Journey Only. He went on to write for many of the big TV...

It's pretty hard to fathom now that BBC One is on the verge of celebrating the show's 50th anniversary in spectacular fashion, but there was a time when (whisper it) Doctor Who wasn't on television.
If you ignore that one night in May 1996 when Paul McGann lit up our screens, Who was in absentia for 16 years, but that doesn't mean that the BBC weren't looking for another sci-fi or fantasy hit to replicate the show's success...
This week's Friday Fiver takes a look at a few such attempts - not programmes like The Tomorrow People inspired by the show's original run, or series like Primeval and Merlin which launched in the wake of the new show's success.
These are the shows that tried - with varying degrees of success - to fill that Doctor Who-shaped hole in our hearts between 1989 and 2005.

Eleventh Hour
Salford born writer Stephen Gallagher first came to prominence with the release of his novel Chimera. The book became a hit TV show and Stephen has since gone on to enjoy huge success as a TV writer on both sides of the Atlantic. In Britain, he wrote the hit drama Eleventh Hour, as well as Oktober and Life Line. He also wrote for Doctor Who and the sci-fi cult classic Bugs. An American version of Eleventh Hour was produced in 2008 and Stephen’s other Us credits include NBC’s Crusoe and ABC’s The Forgotten.
Kieran Kinsella recently caught up with Stephen and began by asking him about Chimera.

Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost) are two UK nerds on tour of the geekier side of the United States. They start with what is arguably the country's nerd Mecca - the San Diego Comic Con - and then begin a tour across the country visiting various UFO tourist spots of legend.
Their vacation goes a little crazy when they bumble into Paul; an actual bona fide alien from outer space who crashed in Roswell in 1947, has been kept prisoner by the government for decades, and who has just finally escaped. Looks like we're going to be waiting a bit longer than first anticipated for Dark Castle's next ghostly cinematic gathering for Warner Bros.
The studio that Bugs built has pulled Todd Lincoln's The Apparition from its 2011 release slate and bumped it to the more frightening time (just in case the Mayans were right) of 2012. The exact date remains undetermined, but hopefully we'll see it before the impending apocalypse.
The flick stars Ashley Greene (Twilight), Sebastian Stan (Black Swan, The Covenant), Luke Pasqualino, Julianna Guill (Friday the 13th, Altitude), and Tom Felton (Rise of the Apes, 13 Hrs, The Disappeared).
Synopsis
"When frightening events start to occur in their home, young couple Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run.

James Franco’s performance in 127 Hours was rightly praised, but what of his earlier, less prominent roles? Ti takes a look back…
James Franco has just been nominated for Best Actor for his role as Aron Ralston in 127 Hours, a film for which he is receiving high praise. Not just that, but he's co-hosting the Academy Awards ceremony (alongside Anne Hathaway) and is rapidly becoming Hollywood's leading man of choice, thanks to his comedic and dramatic acting chops.
He will soon be seen in Your Highness ("Handle your shit, Fabius, please.") and Rise Of The Apes, all while finishing a PhD in English Literature at Yale.
Clearly, his star wattage is at its zenith, but it wasn't always so.
Fresh off his success as Harry Osborn in the Spider-man movies, Franco was cast as the lead in a number of films, many of which failed spectacularly at the box office...

Shot in stark, beautiful black & white, director Michael Haneke has fashioned a haunting metaphorical drama that is as coldly chilling as anything made by Ingmar Bergman, and darkly unsettling as anything from the canon of David Lynch. Entertainer Travalena Dead At 66
Entertainer Fred Travalena has become the latest star to pass away in a week of tragic celebrity deaths.
The impressionist and singer was 66 when he died at his home in Encino, California on Sunday.
Travalena fought non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2002 and the disease returned last summer after going into remission.
Dubbed 'The Man of a Thousand Faces' for his ability to mimic stars like Jack Nicholson, Sammy Davis, Jr. and even Bugs Bunny, Travalena became a big name in America in the early 1970s.
He went on to become a mainstay headliner in Las Vegas, Reno, Nevada and Atlantic City, New Jersey - and was a regular on the U.S. chat show circuit.
In one part of his beloved act, Travalena mimicked all the U.S. presidents, from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush.
He was also famous for singing signature tune Have I Told You Lately as Kermit the Frog, Frank Sinatra and Katharine Hepburn, according to the Los Angeles Times. He even wowed fans with a routine, in which he played Sinatra imitating Boy George.
Flowers have been placed on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is awash with tributes to those stars who have passed away in the last seven days, like Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Gale Storm and Ed McMahon.

Milk (Universal) Sean Penn deservedly captured his second Best Actor Oscar (and Dustin Lance Black a statuette for his original screenplay) in director Gus Van Sant’s portrait of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to hold public office in the U.S. Alternately heartbreaking, infuriating and very funny, a film that both captures a bygone era and is still very timely. Fine support from Josh Brolin, Victor Garber, James Franco and Emile Hirsch. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Three featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.
