The actor on playing a Polish Holocaust survivor alongside Lena Dunham, what he likes about hip‑hop and why a boring Pm would be a relief
Stephen Fry, 66, is an actor, broadcaster, writer, presenter and director. As a teenager, he was expelled from school, went to prison for credit card fraud and failed his A-levels before retaking them, resulting in a scholarship to Cambridge University, where he joined the Footlights sketch troupe. He has since starred in more than 60 TV shows, at least 50 films and written 17 books. His latest film, Treasure, with Lena Dunham, is out now.
In Treasure, you play Edek, a Polish Holocaust survivor, reluctantly turning to his homeland with his journalist daughter (played by Dunham). It’s a long way from playing Jeeves and General Melchett in Blackadder.
It is! Casting directors, for all kinds of obvious reasons, think of me if they need a pompous lawyer or headmaster [laughs]. But just occasionally,...

Yesterday, all their troubles seemed so far away.
In 2022, Peter Rosza and Conor Woulfe sued Universal Pictures after they rented the 2019 movie “Yesterday” on Amazon Prime Video and subsequently felt they had been bamboozled by the trailer. The film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, is a zany musical fantasy in which Himesh Patel, a struggling musician, is bonked on the head and wakes up in a world in which The Beatles Never Happened. As such, he starts playing their songs as if they are his own and the movie follows the expected Preston Sturges-like tropes you might expect.
The trailer for the movie featured quite a few glimpses of the alluring Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas, later Oscar-nominated for her leading turn in “Blonde,” who ended up not being in the movie at all. An early cut included her character, but that storyline was shaved down after the movie tested poorly.

Hugh Laurie has seen it all. The British star might have never hoped of pursuing acting as a profession in the long run. But a freak injury (and a fortuitous turn of events) saw him foray into acting. And what a journey has it been for real.
The Stuart Little star has scaled the heights of the Industry , with his shows in particular marking the peak of his career. For him, it has all been about going from strength to strength ever since. Receiving his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was all but obvious. But even he couldn’t wrap his head around the same.

Even though many who grew up watching the movies or reading books may now be full-fledged adults, they still haven’t forgotten their experiences with these pieces of popular culture.

He’s the consummate actor, writer, renaissance man. What on earth wouldn’t you like to learn Stephen Fry’s take on?
There’s so much you could ask Stephen Fry. Maybe something about his TV career, from A Bit of Fry and Laurie to Jeeves and Wooster to Blackadder to Qi. Perhaps his books – the novels, the memoirs, the classics, how to write poetry.
Maybe something about his illustrious film career, with Wilde the obvious highlight, but which also includes Chariots of Fire, Gosford Park, The Hobbit, Love and Friendship, and Spice World.

Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti) and Werner Pfennig (Louis Hoffman) share curiosity and empathy, which translates across their opposing countries and positions in the war. Werner’s skill for fixing and translating radios leads him to a high position in the Nazi effort to decode secret broadcasts that their targets might send. Marie-Laure herself becomes a broadcaster after her father moves her to her uncle’s home in a small, seaside French town.

Warning: This contains spoilers for Not Going Out
Back in 2015, during a BBC Breakfast interview about series seven of Not Going Out, presenter Bill Turnbull asked Lee Mack: “Did you ever imagine when you first got that pilot that you’d get seven series?”
“I didn’t think we’d even get a series,” Mack answers incredulously, explaining that even going from script to a pilot episode felt like “the biggest hurdle”.
And yet, eight years later (17 since the show began in 2006), Not Going Out has now almost doubled its series from seven to 13, still regularly pulling in audiences of over four million, with the newest series arriving on BBC One on Friday 23rd June at 9pm. As ever, the show will focus on Lee Mack as a fictionalised version of himself, alongside his landlady-turned-wife and sparring partner Lucy, and their eventful and often farcical life together.

Richard Curtis does not plan to write any more films. The 66-year-old screenwriter is famous for penning romantic comedies such as 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Love Actually' but has ruled out writing another movie as he finds his work repetitive.Richard told Jon Snow on the Snowcast: "I'm not sure I'll ever write another film because I like other people's films more than mine now."I remember the shock when I saw 'Notting Hill'. I thought, 'Oh my God it's exactly the same film as 'Four Weddings!'"Curtis – who also had TV hits with 'Blackadder' and 'The Vicar of Dibley' – admits that he was left exasperated by the way his films were marketed. He said: "When I see trailers for my movies, everything's in the wrong order, they give away the plots, they use shots that aren't in the film.

David Walliams was among those vying for Britain’s spot at the next Eurovision Song Contest in a comedy sketch for the BBC’s Comic Relief broadcast.
After performing “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor in a tight leather suit, judges Graham Norton, Lulu and Sam Ryder declared that Walliams had failed to secure the gig.
Upon hearing their verdict, the comedy actor approached the judge’s table and placed a gold, Britain’s Got Talent buzzer on it.
“Well, you might not have liked it but I loved it,” Walliams said, hitting the buzzer, prompting a stream of confetti to fall around him. “Yes! I’m through to the live Eurovision final!” he declared.
“He’s not even on that show anymore,” a bemused Norton said.

Dawn French was unrecognisable (sort of) as Claudia Winkleman in BBC One’s parody of The Traitors for Comic Relief.
The Vicar of Dibley star donned Winkleman’s trademark black fringe for the sketch as well as one of the star’s giant roll-neck jumpers that gradually enveloped her whole face.
“I’m actually Claudia Winkleman: half woman, half fringe,” French tells the contestants.
“It feels like it’s time to have a discussion,” she continues. “And during that discussion I will be walking round this table incessantly saying creepy stuff and looking absolutely gorgeous.”
In one scene, French parts her fringe using a curtain pulley.
The “contestants” included Alison Hammond, who was just confirmed as Matt Lucas’s replacement on The Great British Bake Off, Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mary Berry, Stephen Merchant, Danny Dyer, Jennifer Saunders and two actual Traitors contestants from season one.

Sir Tony Robinson reprised his Blackadder role of Baldrick for a Red Nose Day 2023 sketch in aid of Comic Relief on Friday (17 March).
The special appearance marked the first time Blackadder has returned to our screens in 20 years. Sadly, Rowan Atkinson – who plays the titular Edmund Blackadder – was not involved in the sketch.
During the BBC’s broadcast, Robinson told a special “Grown-up Bedtime Story”, produced by the CBeebies Bedtime Stories team.
“This is a lovely story called Balder-ella,” Robinson’s dimwitted Baldrick told viewers in the sketch written by Blackadder co-creator Richard Curtis.
“Once upon a time, there was a nice little fella and his name was Baldrick. And he lived in a house with a very nasty man called Edmund Blackadder. And often Blackadder would say ‘Baldrick, you are as stupid as Stuart McStupid who won the stupidest man in Britain award 17 years in a row, which...

Loose Women viewers were left angered by a tense debate about the Nicola Bulley investigation.
On Thursday’s edition of the ITV show (16 February), the panellists discussed the police’s search for the missing mother, and whether they were right to share details about “significant issues” Ms Bulley had in her personal life.
Kéllé Bryan supported people’s questioning of the police’s handling of the case, stating: “I guess my personal issue is the trust for the police. I think people have every right to ask them questions.”
She said that she doesn’t encourage “keyboard warriors” to wade in, but “those who have an informed place, who have done their reading and done their research from what is available”.
However, Jane Moore had an issue with her co-star’s point, and, interrupting her, replied: “But from what’s available, that is not necessarily that is all that is available.

Hollywood stars are sending their love to Bruce Willis and his family after revealing more details about his condition.
On Thursday (16 February), the Die Hard star’s family provided an update, almost a year after revealing he had been diagnosed with aphasia.
They said that Willis’s condition has progressed, and he has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, which is known as Ftd.
“Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce, 67, faces,” his family shared in a joint statement, adding: “While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”
Calling it a “cruel disease”, they went on to say that “Ftd is the most common form of dementia, and because getting the diagnosis can take years, Ftd is likely much more prevalent than we know”.

Liam Neeson worried seeing Tom Hanks would take him out of Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated movie Elvis.
The director’s musical biopic follows the rock icon’s (Austin Butler) rise to superstardom and his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks).
“I thought it was fantastic,” Neeson told IndieWire in a new interview. “Extraordinary. Baz Luhrmann.”
“It was superb, really superb,” he continued. “I got a little bit worried when I saw Tom Hanks. I thought, ‘Oh no, oh please, this is taking me out of the film.’
“But for a very short time, a very short time. But he was wonderful. It was a wonderful performance. It really grew on me, that one.”
The film was warmly received by critics after its 24 June release last year. The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey praised it for making “the King cool again”.

Jeremy Clarkson is in hot water again, following a terse exchange on his show Clarkson’s Farm, in which he told a dyslexic barrister to “learn to spell”.
Charles Streeten said that the former Top Gear host’s mocking comments about his spelling during an episode of the Amazon Prime show had forced him to relive his difficult childhood.
Streeten was representing the local council against Clarkson over planning permission to extend his farm in Oxfordshire in the second series of the programme.
During the episode, while walking out of the planning meeting, Clarkson told Streeten he should “learn to spell”.
Streeten subsequently published an open letter to Clarkson, revealing his learning difficulties and explaining they had not affected his career as a barrister, later adding that he had not expected the remark to be televised.

The comedian, who had his own BBC One chat show in the 1990s, which moved to ITV from 1999 to 2005, said he thinks “radio and podcasts is the place for me” during a new interview.
Skinner was responding to a question that asked him whetherhe was happiest “on stage, radio or telly”.
“I’m 66 now,” he told Metro.co.uk. “I think the human face gets quite hard to look at when you get to about 60 onwards. So I think probably radio and podcasts is the place for me.”
He continued: “Plus, I like not having to shave.”
Skinner has been a fixture on TV screens for three decades now, with appearances on comedy shows, Room 101, Have I Got News For You and Taskmaster.

Rebel Wilson has claimed that her contract for the Pitch Perfect film franchise stipulated that she did not lose weight.
The actor, 42, talked about her weight loss efforts, which began in 2020 after the franchise had ended, on the latest episode of the American podcast Call Her Daddy.

“I couldn’t lose a massive amount of weight because it was in the contracts for that movie. You can’t lose – I think it’s not more than 10 pounds or gain more than 10 pounds. You have to kind of stay at the weight. It’s in your contract.”
In the musical-comedy film series, Wilson played a student called “Fat Amy”, with the role making her a household name.

In space, no one can hear you grumble about your s****y job. The title sequence for "Red Dwarf" opens with a guy in a grubby spacesuit, miserably daubing paint on the exterior of the eponymous mining vessel. When the camera pulls back we can see why he's unhappy; he is working on the "F" of the ship's name which must be about 80 feet high.
It could be a scene from "Dark Star" or "Alien," two movies that showed us that space travel will be pretty boring and arduous for the regular Joes who keep the lights on during long hauls between the stars. Those films provided inspiration for "Red Dwarf" writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who set their cult British show on a spaceship three million years in the future. Those films provided inspiration for "Red Dwarf" writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who set their cult British show on a spaceship three million years in the future. Only one of its characters is a living human, but that doesn't stop them from following the classic...

Have you something to ask the outspoken doyen of stage and screen? Then send it our way and we’ll put it to her
With a career that has spanned nearly 50 years, it might be hard to pinpoint your favourite Miriam Margolyes moment. Maybe you remember her Bafta-winning performance as Mrs Mingott in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence? As the rude-shaped-turnip-appreciating Lady Whiteadder in Blackadder? Or as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter franchise?
The Jewish, Labour-supporting actor has been outspoken about her politics since her days growing up in Oxford and studying at Cambridge university, so when it comes to interviews, she’s gold dust. She explained to Graham Norton how, erm, “sexually aroused” she was at first meting Sir Laurence Olivier and told Daniel Radcliffe how much he had “matured” since they first worked together. In October she told Radio 4 exactly what she thinks of Jeremy Hunt.

It’s 22Bc and we’re somewhere in Germany, on the northern border of the Roman empire near Frisia. Soldiers are going about their business, cleaning shields and helmets, chatting and laughing, and further along the sandy dune, under the high sun, combat training is taking place.
Enter Marcus Gallo, Grumio, and Jason Brindisi – accidental soldiers about to fight a Roman war. And for what? Because they thought joining the army in peacetime would bring them fame, food, wealth and perhaps most importantly – for Jason at least – women.
But, as with all things these boys try, it doesn’t quite work out that way. Peace is short, and now – as they are about to find out from the formidable commander – they’re on the frontline of the “Roman f***ing army” as the so-called barbarians invade.
Except it’s not Frisia, but Wales and the year is 2022. The sun was real though,...

A 100th anniversary is a milestone in the history of any institution. In the case of the BBC, the centenary of its founding on 18 October 1922 triggers a rush of memories, a landslide of couch-bound nostalgia. But whether it’s Doctor Who’s Dalek battles, David Attenborough striking up a bromance with a family of gorillas, or Line of Duty’s Ted Hastings invoking “Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey”, the sweep of the corporation’s output across the past century is impossible to condense into a few paragraphs. Still, we’ve tried to pull together some of the most iconic shows of those 10 decades, from drama and documentary to comedy via arts, music and science fiction. All are iconic in their own right. Together they are a portrait of a time, a country, and a belief in broadcasting as a force for good in the world.

Robbie Coltrane, the veteran comic and actor known for his star turns in the British crime series Cracker and the Harry Potter movie franchise, died Friday, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. He was 72.
Coltrane’s agent Belinda Wright called him a “unique talent,” whom she’ll remember as “an abidingly loyal client.”
“As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent and brilliantly witty, and after 40 years of being proud to be to called his agent, I shall miss him,” Wright added of Coltrane in a statement.
The boisterous and decidedly eccentric Scotsman, who began his career in comedy and theater, also commanded the screen in two James Bond films during an illustrious career on both sides of the Atlantic.

Photo: ‘Man Vs. Bee’ From Bean to Bee Rowan Atkinson is someone who needs no introduction. From gaining mainstream attention in classic British television comedies like ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Mr. Bean’ to starring in films like ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Johnny English’, he’s made quite a name for himself in the world of entertainment. Going into this show, I remained cautiously optimistic. The logline didn’t exactly win me over, and the idea of it being a series rather than a movie came across as questionable, but Atkinson’s presence as star and co-creator did pique my interest. While I can admittedly be picky about comedy now and again, I do enjoy some well-timed slapstick, and out of anyone to...
