Hulu is aiming to shake up this year’s Best TV Movie Emmy race with the new Searchlight Pictures horror-comedy “Fresh.” Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Noa, who goes on a weekend getaway with her new boyfriend Steve, played by Sebastian Stan, only to be drugged and kidnapped by him. Steve, whose real name is Brendan, soon reveals himself to be a butcher who harvests “fresh” human meat and sells it for a profit. Edgar-Jones, Stan, director Mimi Cave and writer Lauryn Kahn recently discussed the film during an Emmys FYC panel moderated by Amy Nicholson. Watch the video Q&a above.
Kahn, who’s worked on various comedy shorts and Adam McKay films, thought it would be a “challenge” to write a horror movie since she’s always been a fan of the genre. She asked herself, “Can I make it the kind of horror movie that I would want to see,...

Rising star Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Sebastian Stan star in this stylish horror-thriller that sinks its teeth into dating culture, toxic male behaviour and a few other tasty morsels on the side. Now streaming on Disney Plus / Star, it marks the directorial debut of Mimi Cave, who clearly has talent to burn.
Edgar-Jones plays Noa, a single twenty-something who’s fed up of meeting red flag-waving weirdos on dating apps. When she meets handsome stranger Steve (Stan) in the supermarket – i.e. the old fashioned way – she can’t resist his charms and soon she’s allowing herself to be whisked away for a romantic weekend at his not-at-all-suspicious remote house in the woods.
Sure enough, Steve turns out to be harbouring a very dark secret, which you can probably guess from the film’s marketing campaign,...

Mimi Cave’s “Fresh,” now on Hulu, is genuinely disturbing.
It’s the story of a young woman named Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who thinks she has found the man of her dreams in Steve (Sebastian Stan), who she meets at a local grocery store. But as she prepares for a romantic weekend away, she discovers who Steve really is – and it’s utterly terrifying. To say anymore would be grounds for imprisonment. But we will say that the movie is a sharp, subversive, and oftentimes very funny look at modern courtship, male/female power dynamics and the wealth divide. It’s a doozy.
TheWrap sat down with “Fresh” screenwriter Lauryn Kahn to ask all the questions you were probably asking yourself after watching.
Spoilers for “Fresh” follow. Watch the film on Hulu and then come back for seconds.

This review of “Fresh” was originally posted Jan. 21, 2022 from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
It takes a long, long time before the so-called “opening credits” roll in Mimi Cave’s decadently horrifying directorial debut “Fresh.” That’s probably because, as wonderful as the film’s first act is, we ain’t seen nothing yet.
“Fresh” begins with the latest in what seems to be a long, long line of crappy online dates for Noa. She hates the modern courtship process — and with good cause — but, dang it, it’s the 21st century, and her options seem limited to swiping right and hoping for the best or a lifetime of lousy loneliness.
So it’s something of a shock when she actually meets a real live person, in a real-life grocery store, who shows an interest her and doesn’t seem like a total sack of crap. Steve has great taste in produce.

Meats for the Meat: Cave Goes for Broke in Gross Out Horror Debut
You are what you eat is an adage taken to literal extremes in Fresh, the provocative but blundering debut from Mimi Cave, an exercise on the horrors of hetero dating with significant subtexts extolling the necessities (or at least the environmentally and aesthetically favorable process) of veganism. There’s a lot to appreciate in Lauryn Kahn’s screenplay which showcases how quickly the essence of a rom-com can be twisted into nightmare fuel. The cannibalism question looms large in the new trailer for the upcoming dating thriller Fresh, set to arrive March 4 on Hulu.

A meet-cute with a definitive bite, “Fresh” proves that modern dating truly is a battlefield.
Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Noa, an unlucky in love would-be cynic if not for meeting handsome Texan surgeon Steve (Sebastian Stan) at the grocery store. Seems like the perfect love story, right?
“Fresh” premieres on Hulu on March 4. The film premiered at 2022 Sundance in the Midnight program. “Fresh” is directed by Mimi Cave and written by Lauryn Kahn. And while the plot is best kept under wraps, there is a mysteriousness to Steve’s (cannibalistic) courtship. The film aims to capture the horrors of modern dating seen through one young woman’s defiant battle to survive her new boyfriend’s unusual appetites.
Star Edgar-Jones explained during the IndieWire Studio at Sundance that “Fresh” exposes “the difficulties we face in the world of dating now and in dating apps, and exploring this general level of fear...

One of the more divisive films coming out of Sundance Film Festival last month was Mimi Cave’s Fresh, which provides a dark twist on the rom-com. Now set for a March 4 debut on Hulu from Searchlight Pictures, the film follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who meets the alluring Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and––given her frustration with dating apps––takes a chance and gives him her number. After their first date, Noa is smitten and accepts Steve’s invitation to a romantic weekend getaway. Only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

With Sundance going virtual for the second year in a row, audiences could once again explore the lineup from around the world, including accredited critics and journalists. This year, 135 of them participated in IndieWire’s annual Sundance critics survey of the best films at the festival, and the results speak to the range of movies that stood out in this year’s lineup.
While several films from the festival have yet to secure distribution, the ones with the most support in our survey found it over the past two weeks, suggesting that buyers and critics saw eye to eye this year. “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” the sophomore effort from 24-year-old filmmaker Cooper Raiff, dominated the survey in the categories of Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. The movie marks Raiff’s second in two years, following his 2020 debut “Shithouse,” which won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW.

Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a single woman trying to make it out there in a world where dating apps lead to uncomfortable dinners with gross, openly sexist man-children. Imagine her surprise when she has a grocery store meet-cute with the ‘just awkward enough to be charming but not so awkward he’s off-putting’ Steve (Sebastian Stan). As you might guess, the two quickly hit it off, and soon enough Steve’s whisking Noa away on a weekend vacation — but first they have to spend the night at Steve’s place, which it turns out is deep, deep, deep in the woods, isolated from civilization and without any cell service. Looks like Noa’s in some trouble. Cue the opening credits.

Noa hates dating, and who can blame her? All the guys she goes out with are creeps. First she has to sit through some awkward dinner, answering the same old questions, while feigning interest in whatever the douchebag du jour wants to talk about. And then comes the part where he inevitably makes a pass, leaning in for a kiss or a feel, using whatever strategy typically works for him — sweet words, empty promises, perhaps Rohypnol — to get in her pants.
#MeToo notwithstanding, modern dating is still a meat market, a concept that Mimi Cave’s sick but satisfying “Fresh” critiques by taking to its most literal extreme. In this Sundance-launched, Hulu-bound midnight movie, anonymous creeps the world over are salivating for a piece of the sexy single girls they order up online, and Noa can’t help feeling like she’s on the menu. Because she is. A...

We should have seen this coming. After “Promising Young Woman” made a splash at Sundance two years ago, the festival was bound to feature more films (cl)aiming to undermine expectations and play with film tropes to craft a fiercely feminist take-down of the patriarchy. At this year’s festival, that film is “Fresh,” directed by Mimi Cave and written by Lauryn Kahn. This time, however, we are unlikely to experience the months and months of online discourse that Emerald Fennell’s film unleashed, as “Fresh” unthinkingly falls into all kinds of regressive and reactionary traps without leaving much space for discussion or disagreement.

In F-rated Netflix comedy “Ibiza,” best friends Harper (Gillian Jacobs), Nikki (Vanessa Bayer) and Leah (Phoebe Robinson) have ditched Manhattan for a wild weekend in Spain where they’ll be welcomed with the 10 words every girl wants to hear: “Please serve yourself with food, drinks, and eye-opening sexual experiences.” That greeting is courtesy of wealthy mansion-owner Hernando (Jordi Mollà), one of a soccer-team’s worth of suitors vying to take the Americans to bed. Men come and go with a breezy freedom, not the manifest destiny of ordinary romantic comedies. Except for Harper’s laser-focus on a Scottish DJ named Leo who inspires her to re-route their vacation from Barcelona to eponymous party island, where she hopes to make stoned eyes at him across a nightclub as the Edm beat pumps like her heart.

Fifteen minutes into Alex Richenbach’s “Ibiza,” Vanessa Bayer breaks out into the first instance of its well-executed physical comedy. The “SNL” stars jumps onto a plush hotel bed to let out the first of many “woooooo!”s that punctuate the film’s script, before giving way to an unexpected result, which Bayer and company milk for every single laugh. The set-up is the kind we’ve seen many times before, but while the hilarity of the moment initially seems indicative of just what Bayer is about to bring to the table, it eventually reveals itself to be emblematic of the film itself: familiar trappings, gussied up with a fresh script from screenwriter Lauryn Kahn.
That script, first sold way back in 2014, recalls similar films — the comparisons to “Girls Trip” are inevitable, but it also shares DNA with films like “Bridesmaids” and “The Sweetest Thing.” The logline of the film...

Scoring her second great role of the new year, Rebel Wilson will play the sharp-tongued roommate of Amanda Seyfried’s character in the Jake Szymanski-directed He’s F-ing Perfect, based on the script by Lauryn Kahn that will be produced by Gary Sanchez. Seyfried will play a social media-savvy girl who is pessimistic about love and vets her friends’ dates to find flaws. When that process leads her to uncover the perfect guy, she decides to use her Internet research skills to turn herself into his perfect match. Wilson landed a part that a lot of actresses chased, and it comes after Wilson landed a showy role as the night guard at a London museum that is the setting for the Shawl Levy-directed Night At The Museum 3. It is nice to see Wilson flourish by being herself after winning turns in the films Bachelorette and especially the sleeper hit Pitch Perfect.
