Richard Osman may be turning his hit novel The Thursday Murder Club into a Netflix feature, but it has not stopped him from roasting the streamer’s chief executive.
During a jolly curtain closer at the Rts London Convention, Osman and his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast co-host Marina Hyde, cast a satirical eye over the day’s speakers.
Osman poked fun at comments made by Ted Sarandos during his opening keynote, in which the Netflix co-ceo shared the secrets of streaming success to an audience of British television luminaries.
Sarandos added that “there’s no reason we couldn’t take 25%” audience share in the UK, which would more than double Netflix’s current viewership of 10%.
Lacing his comments with sarcasm, Osman joked: “We’ve all been in the business a long time and, by and large, we don’t really know what we’re doing. He knows how to...

The Murder Mysterenaissance just keeps getting better and better! As production ramps up Rian Johnson's star-filled Knives Out threequel Wake Up Dead Man, Netflix's other big upcoming whodunit, Chris Columbus' adaptation of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club, is continuing to add to its own stacked ensemble. Per Deadline's reporting, Withnail & I star Richard E. Grant and Lucifer's Tom Ellis lead the latest round of additions to the buzzy Brit-led crime caper.
Hailing from writer-director Columbus and backed by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, there's some serious creative firepower behind Netflix's take on Osman's tale of crime-solving pensioners caught up in a real high-stakes murder mystery. As has already been confirmed, The Thursday Murder Club's central quartet consists of Helen Mirren's ex-spy Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan's former union man Ron, Ben Kingsley's retired psychiatrist Ibrahim, and Celia Imrie's kindly former nurse Joyce.

Murder mystery adaptation The Thursday Murder Club has added yet more names to its cast, including the great Richard E Grant.
Whether The Thursday Murder Club turns out to be good, bad or indifferent, there’s no doubting the strength of its cast. Among the stars already announced, we can now add Withnail himself, Richard E Grant, and veteran British actor Paul Freeman, whose signature roles include Belloq in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
The murder mystery adaptation’s other new additions, according to Deadline, are Tom Ellis, Geoff Bell, Sarah Niles and Ingrid Oliver – the latter perhaps best known as recurring character Petronella Osgood in Doctor Who. Oliver also happens to be the spouse of Richard Osman, the author of the original Murder Club novel.
Directed by Chris Columbus and produced by Amblin, The Thursday Murder Club sees a bunch of crime-solving retirement home residents investigate the suspicious death of a local property developer.

There has never been so much behind-the-scenes BBC coverage of Doctor Who. “The Star Beast” ran for a single hour, but already has an in-episode commentary from David Tennant and producers Phil Collinson and Vicki Delow, a half-hour instalment of companion show Doctor Who: Unleashed, plus a half-hour official accompanying podcast. And that’s on top of all the interviews, features and in-depth looks from Doctor Who Magazine. Seekers of nerdy insights – our cup runneth seriously over.
For each of the three anniversary specials, and then continuing through Christmas 2023 and series fourteen, we can watch the episode, watch it again with the commentary, listen to the podcast and catch up with Steffan Powell’s exclusive Unleashed coverage. Do all that and you’ll probably need some kind of energy drink and a biscuit, but the fun titbits below are a taste of what you can glean.

Is Richard Osman’s House of Games the perfect teatime quiz show? It’s certainly in contention. Silly, funny and warm, it makes very good company. The armchairs exude a sense of convivial relaxation. There are no flashing-lights podiums or tense burden of cash prizes, making it a wholly gentler experience than, say, The Chase. It keeps the same four contestants all week long, meaning that the kind of rapport other quiz shows try to manufacture in rapid-fire Q&As with the host can naturally develop. The personalities and relationships are almost as important as the rounds and questions, and it’s all done with a sense of humour – from the deliberately naff 1970s gameshow-style fondue sets and carriage clock prizes, to the enjoyable silliness behind almost every round.
To celebrate the new series airing now on weekdays at 6pm on BBC Two, here are a few fun titbits about the show.

Forget the Countdown teapot or the Pointless Trophy. The most coveted prize on UK television has four wheels, an extendable handle and a quiff.
Since October 2019, Richard Osman’s House of Games has occasionally offered a wheelie suitcase among its selection of kitsch branded prizes. For context – whichever celebrity contestant wins that day’s episode has a choice of five rewards decorated with the face of host and creator Richard Osman. The prizes range from the glamorous (a decanter) to the practical (gardening gloves) to the playful (a dartboard) to the esoteric.
The greatest of these, and by far the most popular, is the wheelie suitcase. In the 430 or so episodes since its first appearance in October 2019, the luggage has been chosen by celebrity contestants 60 times out of a possible 86*. In other words, the baggage reclaim at Edinburgh airport around the time of the Fringe Festival is chock-a-block with them.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies has spoken in the past about how the previous Doctor Who spin-offs came too soon. Given the current expanded universe boom across various franchises led by Marvel’s dominance of cinema and subsequent ventures into TV, the launch of The Sarah-Jane Adventures, Torchwood, etc…. was ahead of its time.
Now, Davies argues, is the moment for Doctor Who‘s version of the MCU. And according to a recent article on mirror.co.uk, that’s exactly what’s about to happen. Rumour has it that fans can expect spin-off series featuring some of the Doctor’s most famous enemies.
The Mirror’s anonymous source suggested: “Fans can expect to see Sontarans, Weeping Angels and Sea Devils in separate series showing what they get up to when the Doctor isn’t there to stop them, along with Daleks and Cybermen.”

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Jac Schaeffer was in Atlanta filming her Disney Plus limited series “WandaVision.” She stayed down South for a little while but then, instead of trekking cross-country to her home base in Los Angeles, she went up the East Coast to Cape Cod, where her family keeps a cottage. “It’s a place I’ve come my whole life, and now it’s super important to my family because it was where we were safe during the really heavy Covid times,” she says. Even while surrounded by extended family there, she can carve out writing space for herself in an office above the kitchen. She admits there have been “many Zoom meetings where my kids run through” on their way to or from the stairs that lead to the kitchen, but there is also something calming about the environment too: “The best part for me — for...

Over the weekend, housebound Whovians lifted their spirits by holding a global rewatch of Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor.” Stars of the show – such as Osgood actress Ingrid Oliver – even got involved, live-tweeting their reactions. Best of all, though, was the arrival of a brand new introduction to the episode, starring (the voice of) Dan Starkey and written by ex-showrunner Steven Moffat.
The rewatch occurred at 7Pm U.K. time this past Saturday, so Starkey dropped the special intro on his Twitter account shortly before it was time to hit play. The hilarious skit sees the actor reprise his beloved character Strax with the help of a pint-sized stuffed toy. Moffat clearly had fun getting topical, too, with the script making references to the most recent season of the series.

BBC America today announced Anna Chancellor, James Fleet, Ingrid Oliver, Ruth Madeley, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, and Bianca Simone Mannie have joined the cast of the network’s disruptive original series, The Watch, premiering in 2020. Co-produced by BBC Studios and Narrativia, The Watch is inspired by Sir Terry Pratchett’s bestselling “Discworld” novels. Set in a fictional city where crime has been legalized, The Watch is a genre-busting series that follows a group of misfit cops as they rise up from decades of helplessness to save their corrupt city from catastrophe. Uniquely anarchic and thrillingly entertaining, the character-driven drama follows several of Sir Terry Pratchett’s best-loved creations on a riotous and emotional odyssey. Anna Chancellor (Pennyworth) is set to star as Lord Vetinari, The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, and architect of the city’s normalized wrongness and ramshackle system of governance. James Fleet (Outlander) will play The Archchancellor, a wizard, magical advisor,...

We all may know someone who’s more than a little “Noel-nutty”. They’re the folks in a frenzy as retailors pack up the pumpkins and bring out the wreaths. And they probably overload on nogg as they “zone out” on all those winter holiday flicks that clog a couple of the basic cable TV channels. Ah, but what’s this at the multiplex, barely a week into November? Did one of those offerings slither out of its cage over at Hallmark? Perhaps, except this has a rather interesting list of talents. It’s got a story and script co-written by Oscar-winner Emma Thompson, and it’s directed by one of the current kings of raunchy comedies (this time minus his muse Melissa McCarthy), Paul Feig. What kind of tinsel and fluff stocking stuffer have these two diverse talents created? Well, it’s one that takes its title (and much...

"I'm busy, you're weird - goodbye!" Universal has unveiled an official trailer for Last Christmas, the next film from Paul Feig. This time he has made a more straight-forward romantic comedy about a young woman who wants her life to start turning for the better. Her latest job is working as an elf at Santa's workshop, but it's there she meets a man named Tom. Emilia Clarke stars, with Henry Golding, and a cast including Emma Thompson (who co-wrote the screenplay), Michelle Yeoh, Patti LuPone, Ingrid Oliver, and Lydia Leonard. Last Christmas also features the music of George Michael, including the bittersweet holiday classic of the film's title. The film will also premiere brand new unreleased material by the legendary Grammy-winning artist. This looks extra schmaltzy like pretty much every other romantic comedy, but there also seems to be tiny hints of a big twist. Here's the first official trailer...

Stars: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver, Emma Davies, Dean Norris, Casper Christensen | Written by Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning, Dale Launer, Jac Schaeffer | Directed by Chris Addison
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as a pair of rival con artists in The Hustle, a remake of 1988′s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (with Michael Caine and Steve Martin), which was itself a remake of 1964′s Bedtime Story, with David Niven and Marlon Brando. That might sound like a tantalising proposition on paper, but the actual film is a profound disappointment with an almost criminal lack of laughs.
Wilson plays low-rent Aussie grifter Penny Rust, whose regular scam involves fleecing gullible men she meets on a dating app. On a train to the South of France, she meets high class con artist Josephine Chesterfield (Hathaway), who immediately schemes to divert Penny from her home turf of Riviera town Beaumont-sur-Mer, on the...

The Jodie Whittaker era of Doctor Who has very much had an “out with the old, in with the new” kind of attitude so far, with no returning characters – except a sole Dalek – in the Thirteenth Doctor’s first 11 on-screen adventures. A bunch of stars of Who past have made it clear that they’d be up for a return in future seasons, though, and now another has added their name to the ever-growing list.
Ingrid Oliver first turned up as uber-fangirl Osgood in 2013’s 50th anniversary bash “The Day of the Doctor” opposite Matt Smith’s Doctor. She later showed up for four further episodes starring Peter Capaldi. The scientist with a fondness for cosplay has always been popular with fans, but she hasn’t appeared on the show since 2015. Despite now starring in Hollywood movies like The Hustle, Oliver told EW that she’d still jump at a Who return.

You don’t need immersive technologies like Dolby Cinema, Screen X or 4Dx to feel the effects of The Hustle. After 94 minutes without a single laugh, you’ll definitely feel the pain knowing that you’ve wasted time and money on this dreadful farce. Allegedly a remake of the far superior Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which itself was a remake of Bedtime Story), the Chris Addison-directed picture credits four screenwriters and yet adds nothing to the original formula nor does it do anything exciting with a well-established genre built on double and triple crosses.
Of the four credited writers, two have passed on years ago, previously credited with Bedtime Story. Dale Launer received credit for this mess as the writer of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This leaves Jac Schaeffer, the only new writer with a credit to bear the brunt of the shame for a picture that no doubt was conceived...

In the new trailer for The Hustle, Anne Hathaway adopts a posh British accent to play an experienced scam artist who takes Rebel Wilson under her very glamorous wing so they can scam a billionaire together - so, yeah, we're definitely seeing this.
The hilarious buddy comedy - which was originally titled Nasty Women and is a gender-swapped version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - was directed by Chris Addison and focuses on seeing Wilson and Hathaway's characters taking down the men who have wronged them. Previously, the roles were played by Steve Martin and Michael Caine in the 1988 crime comedy. Fortunately, the latest iteration of the caper promises stunning views of mansions, diamonds, Hathaway's extensive collection of gowns, and plenty of physical comedy from Wilson.
Tim Blake Nelson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver, and Emma Davies also star in the film, which will hit theaters on May 10.

MGM released a new trailer for The Hustle, a comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as scam artists teaming up to take revenge on the men who’ve wronged them. The film is a gender-bent remake of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Caine, itself a remake of the 1964 Marlon Brando/David Niven comedy Bedtime Story.
As seen in the Avengers-parodying teaser, Hathaway plays a posh Englishwoman alongside Wilson’s raunchier, low-class character. In classic buddy-comedy fashion, plenty of hijinks ensue around the characters’ differences, and...

"We're not nice women. We're con artists!" The Revenge is on! MGM has debuted the second official trailer for summer comedy The Hustle, playing off of The Avengers and the hype for that big blockbuster movie opening this week. The Hustle is a gender-swapped remake of comedy classic Dirty Rotten Scoundrels from 1988. In this one, Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway star as two "down-and-out" con artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them. The original movie involves the two of them participating in a secret "loser leaves town" contest to see who can out scam the other. This one also stars Tim Blake Nelson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver, Emma Davies, and Douggie McMeekin. An amusing trailer, not the funniest, but it's good. Hopefully the movie is better. Here's the second official trailer for Chris Addison's The Hustle,...

Anne Hathway helps Rebel Wilson master the art of the perfect con in the new trailer for The Hustle, set to arrive May 10th.
In the film, Hathaway plays a high-class scammer who takes Wilson, a small-time crook, under her wing and teaches her how to properly fleece wealthy men. In the clip, Hathaway’s character shows Wilson everything from the deadly art of knife throwing to the practiced craft of fake crying, especially how to get a lone tear to roll perfectly down her cheek.

Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway will give “dirty rotten men” a run for their money this spring – that’s the tagline in this new trailer for MGM’s The Hustle, a female-centric remake of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. That comedy starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine.
Directed by Chris Addison, with a screenplay by Stanley Shapiro & Paul Henning and Dale Launer and Jac Schaeffer, The Hustle stars Hathaway and Wilson as two con artists – “one low rent and the other high class,” says MGM – who team up to “take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them.”
In the trailer, Wilson poses as a grieving sister seeking her missing sibling. “I’m here to find my sister. She’s been taken by men who sell hot white virgins to kajillionaires on yachts,” she tells a stranger on a train, racial specificity and all.
The Hustle is produced by Roger Birnbaum and Rebel Wilson.

"Who's the mark?" United Artists & MGM have revealed the first trailer for summer comedy The Hustle, a gender-swapped remake of comedy classic Dirty Rotten Scoundrels from 1988. This one seems to twist that concept a bit, and move it to a different high roller town. Also starring Tim Blake Nelson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver, Emma Davies, and Douggie McMeekin. The original is a classic, and the way the two play off of each is brilliant. I'm not sure this one will live up to that, but it looks absurd enough. Here's...

Anne Hathaway is moving on from box office dud “Serenity” with what should be a summer comedy hit thanks to “The Hustle.” MGM has debuted the first trailer for the comedy, which pairs the Oscar winner with “Pitch Perfect” favorite Rebel Wilson for a female-powered “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” remake.
“The Hustle” stars Hathaway and Wilson as “female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them,” reads the official synopsis. The supporting cast includes Alex Sharp, Tim Black Nelson, Ingrid Oliver, and Emma Davies. The script was written by Jac Schaeffer and it was her launching pad to getting an even bigger gig, as she’s now writing Scarlett Johansson’s standalone Black Widow movie for Marvel and Disney.

If you’re a Doctor Who fan, you probably know of the work of Big Finish Productions, the audio company with the license to create brand new stories starring the ever-changing cast of the TV show. Virtually every living Doctor and a whole host of companions, allies and supporting characters appear in Big Finish’s audio dramas, which will have been going for an impressive 20 years in 2019.
To celebrate this milestone, the company’s releasing its biggest boxset yet. Titled The Legacy of Time, the six-part collection unites at least five Doctors and a galaxy of stars from the show, both contemporary and classic. The cast, which is full of Doctor Who royalty, includes Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Alex Kingston, Sophie Aldred, Katy Manning, Jemma Redgrave and Ingrid Oliver. And there’s still plenty more where that came from.

With John Simm having made his return to Doctor Who for the first time since 2010 in last week’s episode “World Enough and Time,” it seems like an opportune moment to remind ourselves of the long history of the Doctor’s nemesis the Master, doesn’t it?
The short video you’ll see above runs through the Master’s many regenerations at a rather quick pace. If you need some reminding, the uber-villain has gone through seven different incarnations over the decades. First, there was Roger Delgado (1971-73), followed by a horribly disfigured version (Peter Pratt, 1976; Geoffrey Beevers, 1981) and then there was Anthony Ainley (1981-89). The one-off Doctor Who: The Movie featured Eric Roberts as the Master in 1997 before the revived series cast Derek Jacobi in 2007. John Simm then took over, followed by Michelle Gomez in 2014.

Not so for TV characters, whose outfits aren't just for insulation, but help to tell the story. Costume designers and showrunners often deck their characters out in key bits of kit chosen specifically to nod to the past or future, or to pay homage to an inspiration. Steven Moffat has spilled a few beans about Doctor Who series 10, quashing the rumours that the episode count will be slashed…
You may have heard the rumours that Doctor Who series 10 was possibly going to have a trimmed-down episode count. Well, now Steven Moffat has come out and called poppycock on those claims.
“We’re making a full series. I can confirm that,” The Moff told the Radio Times. “I’m making a full series of 12 episodes, plus a Christmas special.”
He continued: “I don’t know when it goes out. That’s up to someone else. And even if I did know – which I genuinely don’t – I wouldn’t be allowed to say so as I have absolutely no say in it whatsoever. [But] it’s not being reduced in size. We’re not making fewer episodes. That’s all complete bunk. I can confirm that absolutely.

Doctor Who annoys me, it is a show I love but it manages to disappoint me so much at times. Doctor Who: 9×08 – The Zygon Inversion at first raises many questions and feels like it is struggling to find its footing. Then with around twenty minutes to the end, becomes something very special for all fans of the show.
Carrying on from the The Zygon Invasion this episode becomes the typical “how will The Doctor get out of this?” type episode. Can he save the day or will the world descend into open warfare? Oh and how did The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) survive Clara’s (Jenna Coleman) attack anyway?
For most of the episode I found myself questioning why Clara had become Miss Roboto while all other Zygons managed to show some emotions. The answer to that one is never actually given. Getting past that, Inversion...

Doctor Who, Series 9, Episodes 7 and 8, “The Zygon Invasion” and “The Zygon Inversion”
Written by Peter Harness and Steven Moffat (“The Zygon Inversion”)
Directed by Daniel Nettheim
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
Doctor Who’s season of two-parters carries on with the return of the Zgyons, fan-favorite baddies from the classic series who have reared their suction-cupped heads a few times in NuWho. Most memorably, they were at the center of the fantastic 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor”, and it’s fitting that writers Peter Harness and Steven Moffat intrinsically tie this story to that special. While many were undoubtedly excited to see the shape-shifting villains return, more exciting for this Whovian is the return of Osgood, after her irritatingly-handled murder in “Death in Heaven”. Though in “The Day of the Doctor” she is little more than a stand-in for the fandom, Ingrid Oliver made...
