The bids were dizzyingly high, but the problem was that Fennell and Robbie were determined to see this one go the theatrical route with P&a spend. It was Martin Scorsese’s iconic The Wolf of Wall Street that gave Margot Robbie the recognition she deserved, and since then, the Australian actress has only been attracting major roles. Little did she know that starting a life in Hollywood would lead her to settle down and start a family as well.
In 2013, while the Birds of Prey actress basked in success following her big break, it was also the same year she met her eventual husband, Tom Ackerley, on the set of Suite Française, a World War II drama. Their lives would change forever a year later.

Emma Corrin, hot from playing villainous Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine, will join Cate Blanchett in the eagerly awaited new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull at London’s Barbican Theatre in 2025.
Another addition to an already sizzling company is Kodi Smit-McPhee, who shot to fame in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog. He also appears with an incandescent Angelina Jolie in Netflix’s awards-season hopeful Maria.
It’s a family reunion, of sorts, for Blanchett and McPhee. They play mother and son in Alfonso Cuarón’s brilliant seven-part Apple TV+ drama Disclaimer, which premieres on the streamer October 11. The two Australian-born actors also play related characters in The Seagull: Blanchett takes on the part of theatrical grand dame Irina Arkadina and McPhee plays her son Konstantin.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we tackle Best Actress, which has two favorites and lots of viable contenders for the other three spots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’re back together to type about what is annually our favorite category: the Best Actress race. In terms of quantity, this year feels no different than previous years, with several performers seemingly vying for one of the five Oscar slots. But as you’ve said when we’ve spoken about this Irl, while there are many contenders, the race maybe doesn’t feel broadly competitive as years past — and once critics groups and precursor awards start being doled out, maybe Best Actress locks into a set five or six contenders very quickly. Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn was one of the most talked about films in the award season in 2024. The film was perhaps the most divisive of all, particularly due to the disturbing nature of the film. Barry Keoghan’s lead character Oliver “Ollie” Quick does some weird and salacious things in the film, which made the film viral when it hit streaming in December 2023.

After her success with Promising Young Woman, Fennell wanted to pursue the subject of obsessive love in her next film. An ensemble cast joined the film including Euphoria star Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and Fennell’s previous film’s star Carey Mulligan.

After making men confront their past behavior with Promising Young Woman and giving Barry Keoghan a chance to hang out with his wang out in Saltburn, Emerald Fennell is tapping Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi to lead her upcoming adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel Wuthering Heights. In addition to starring in the romance film, Robbie’s LuckyChap is producing alongside MRC. LuckyChap has a history of collaborating with Emerald Fennell. They teamed up for Fennell’s unsettling empowerment thriller Promising Young Woman and her high society orgy of manipulation and murder, Saltburn.
Margot Robbie will play Catherine Earnshaw, and Jacob Elordi will play Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. Production is ramping up for a 2025 UK shoot. Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell’s anticipated “Wuthering Heights” adaptation just got buzzier with Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie and BAFTA nominee Jacob Elordi attached to star as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.
MRC has tapped LuckyChap to produce the upcoming feature film — written, directed and produced by Fennell, based on the classic romance novel by Emily Brontë. This marks LuckyChap and Fennell’s third collaboration following 2020’s “Promising Young Woman” (which won Fennell the Oscar for best original screenplay) and 2023’s “Saltburn.” Fennell also had a featured role in LuckyChap’s $1.4 billion-grossing and Academy Award-winning “Barbie” movie, which Robbie produced and starred in last year.
“Wuthering Heights” is in pre-production, gearing up for a 2025 shoot in the U.K.
Fennell announced her plans to adapt “Wuthering Heights” as her third feature in July, posting a surprise announcement to social media with a graphic that reads, “Be with me always – Take any form – Drive me mad,...

Mary J. Blige remembers the first time she got positive feedback for her acting. “When I was 7, I did a Christmas play in school, and the word from the other students and teachers was that me and this guy who was also in the play did very, very, very well,” she says. “It put something in me like, ‘Okay maybe I can really do this,’ and I always wanted to act [after] getting that feedback. At some point, I kind of left it alone and got into the music business.”
Choosing the music business early in her career has more than worked out for Blige. To date, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, won nine Grammys and is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in October. And she’s not stopping. She just released “Breathing” with rapper Fabolous, the lead...

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

It appears Beef has gotten its Season 2 leads so find out who stars in the second season of the Netflix hit!
Netflix viewers are used to how some shows can come and go from the streamer far too quickly. It’s sad the company has a history of canceling great shows too early. However, Beef ranks as a Netflix show that became not just a hit but a full-on sensation.
Season 1 of Beef tells the strange story of two people (played by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong) whose roadside encounter turns into a bizarre battle between them. The show won huge critical raves for its writing and performances.
It also cleaned up at awards season, winning eight Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series and Yeun and Wong. The actors also earned Golden Globes and SAG awards for their work.
With such success, a second season was inevitable although it won’t continue with Wong and Yeun.

Charles Melton is spilling the beans on “Beef” Season 2.
While the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning Netflix and A24 limited series has not officially been renewed for a second season, Melton confirmed that he is indeed cast in the next installment. “Beef” starred Ali Wong and Steven Yeun as two L.A. residents whose road rage incident spurs mutual destruction in their respective personal lives.
Deadline reported that Season 2 will instead focus on two warring couples, with “May December” breakout Melton and “Priscilla” star Cailee Spaeny playing one duo. While both Melton and Spaeny have separately confirmed their respective castings, the other actors Deadline reported have not.
Those stars are rumored to be Oscar winners Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan as the other couple; Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway were rumored to have also been asked to join the series. And this wouldn’t be the first time Gyllenhaal and Isaac...

With the current re-release of Henry Selick’s Coraline netting a rather staggering $11.3 million at the U.S. box office, Laika is back in the conversation. The Oregon-based animation studio isn’t just hanging on its laurels, however, as they are in production on their next feature Wildwood, which is set for a release in 2025, marking the longest break they’ve had between features as it’s been six years since 2019’s Missing Link.
Directed by the company’s CEO Travis Knight (who also directed Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee) and written by Chris Butler, it’s based on the 2011 novel from The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy, which featured illustrations by Carson Ellis.
