The slate of offerings from Taiwan at this year’s European Film Market is a solid one, without a doubt. Among the 92 titles of films and projects, there are recent Golden Horse award-winning titles as well as new regional and international co-productions, both completed or works in-progress, in a diverse range of genres that come with promising premises, and a delegation of at least 10 sales companies that will present at the event in Berlin.
Such a strong line-up of films available for international sales can be understood as a snapshot of current state of Taiwan cinema. There’s an emergence of a generation of new talent who dare to challenge the status quo of filmmaking and storytelling, and the ambition to reach an audience beyond the self-governed island is loud and clear. This is especially true following the international attention that “A Sun” and “The Falls” had previously garnered, the...

Even indie romantic comedies seem to be getting into the more-is-bigger-is-hopefully-better ethos of action movies. Add six weddings to the titular number in that 1994 Hugh Grant-Andie MacDowell classic of the genre (then subtract that funeral) and you’ve got ten nuptials across which the modest, frisky charmer “Plus One” brings its teasingly antagonistic protagonists (played by Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid) from the friend zone to the meant-to-be realm.
The reality, of course, is that getting invited to multiple weddings in a single year is hardly the stuff of screenwriters’ imagination, especially when one is ten years out of college, rich in coupled-up friends, and from a family with either eligible siblings or a dating parent. Such is the age-specific romance epidemic writers-directors Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer place their irritably single but searching characters into, and it makes for a serviceably fertile, love-surrounded setting in which to...

People often ponder during every stage of their life if and when they’re supposed to be doing the same as everyone around them. One major consideration young adults often face is whether they should follow in their friends and peers’ footsteps, and get married. That contemplation is a powerful motivator for the two main protagonists […]

"I'll set you up so you can do your thang, you know!" Rlje Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Plus One, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival just last month. This fresh take on the still-single-at-friends-wedding comedy is about two longtime single friends who agree to be each other's plus one at every wedding they've been invited to. Set over a summer of weddings – Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid star as Alice and Ben, respectively. And the cast also includes Beck Bennett, Rosalind Chao, Perrey Reeves, and Ed Begley, Jr. This looks and sounds and seems like pretty much every other singles romantic comedy where they realize that yes, as they literally say in this trailer, waiting for someone perfect doesn't lead you anywhere. And the right person is right in front of you. These are always the same. Here's the first official...

“We wrote this during a time when all of our friends seemingly got engaged at the same time,” Chan explained at the film’s Sunday evening world premiere as part of the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. “There ...
