Horror fans, we're eatin' good (with our eyes). It's been a splendid 2024 already, and we're not even at the Halloween rush yet. Indie darlings like Shudder's "Exhuma" or "Infested" have stunned the platform's subscribers, Neon mesmerized theatergoers with "Immaculate" and "Longlegs," and studio releases like "The First Omen" or "Alien: Romulus" brought the thunder. Can we not bother with the obligatory "Horror's back, baby!" articles this October? Horror never left, horror's always en vogue, and horror's been having one heck of a year.
Like I said, Halloween still two months away. We're still staring at a whole dang slate of spooky season releases on the horizon. With titles like "Speak No Evil" or "Terrifier 3" patiently waiting, the best horror watches this year might still be on the way. Even better, we've seen some of those releases yet to come and can confirm that 2024 still has some tricks up its sleeve.

There’s actually been a few wrestling-themed horror movies but the quality has been somewhat lacking. From Wrestlers vs Zombies to Wrestlemaniac to Parts Unknown to Wrestlemassacre. At best, these have been somewhat average, so could Dark Match buck the trend and actually blend horror and wrestling and still be entertaining?!
In Dark Match, a small-time wrestling company in the eighties accept a well-paid booking in a backwoods town, only to realise too late that it is run by a cult leader with devious plans. On the face of things, that doesn’t sound like the story for a great movie but Dark Match might just surprise you.

"Will you catch them?" Republic Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for a crime thriller film titled The Silent Hour, the latest from filmmaker Brad Anderson. This action thriller will debut in theaters and on VOD starting in October if anyone's curious, without showing up at any festivals either. The film follows a hearing impaired police detective who works as an interpreter for the department and must confront a team of corrupt cops trying to eliminate a deaf murder witness who lives alone in an apartment building. "Cut off from the outside world, these two strangers must lean on each other to outsmart killers they can’t hear coming for their only hope of making it out alive." Starring Joel Kinnaman along with Sandra Mae Frank, Mekhi Phifer, Michael Eklund, and Mark Strong. This looks so cheap & derivative, it's sad they still keep making more of these. // Continue Reading ›...

Taking its name from an industry term for a non-televised fight that typically takes place before the main event to hype up a crowd, Canadian filmmaker Lowell Dean’s latest feature, Dark Match, almost exemplifies its title too well – presenting viewers with an infernal smackdown that feels more like a taster for a brutal satanic slobberknocker than a marquee-worthy event in its own right.

The trailer for the new Bruce Willis action vehicle titled Detective Knight: Rogue has been released by Lionsgate. This film looks to be yet another lower-budgeted direct-to-video release for the action star, except this one might be part of an already shot trilogy? In it, Willis plays a Los Angeles cop that sees an uptick in bank robberies in the city from an elite group of thieves.
The synopsis on the IMDb is what suggests the movie may be the first instalment of a trilogy:
Bruce Willis stars as veteran Detective James Knight, dedicated to navigating the demanding streets of Los Angeles, in this thrilling first of a trilogy of films. As the city prepares for Halloween, mask-wearing armed robbers critically wound Knight’s partner in a shootout following a heist. With Knight in hot pursuit, the bandits flee L.A. for New York, where the detective’s dark past...

"I was thinking… what if we try your way." Here we go again, another one of these. Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for Detective Knight: Rogue, yet another new Bruce Willis action thriller junk film to skip. Once again, these seem to be never-ending despite the announcement about Bruce Willis' cognitive disorder earlier this year. How many more are there?! Willis stars as veteran Detective James Knight. As Los Angeles prepares for Halloween, mask-wearing armed robbers hit Knight's partner in a shoot out following a heist. With Knight in hot pursuit, the bandits flee from Los Angeles to New York, where the detective's dark past collides with his present case and threatens to tear his world apart… unless redemption can claim Knight first. Also starring Lochlyn Munro, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Corey Large, Michael Eklund, and Johnny Messner. This looks instantly forgettable like always - nothing more than a cops & robbers story.

"They are asking for trouble with that behavior!" Brainstorm Media has released an official trailer for an indie thriller titled The Sinners, formerly known as The Color Rose, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Courtney Paige. This originally premiered at the Mammoth Film Festival last year, and arrives on VOD early next month. The Sinners is a thrilling murder mystery about seven girls from a religious town that start a cult where they embody the seven deadly sins. They realize there's more to their small religious town after they go missing one by one after a prank goes wrong. The indie horror-thriller stars Kaitlyn Bernard, Brenna Coates, Brenna Llewellyn, Aleks Paunovic, Lochlyn Munro, Michael Eklund, and Tahmoh Pinikett. It looks a tad cliche and cheesy, with the religious undertones, but still quite eerie. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Courtney Paige's The Sinners, direct from YouTube: You...

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 7

Van Helsing hits its fourth season midpoint in full stride with the addition of horror fiction’s most renowned vampire and an intriguing plot twist that opens the door for any number of characters to step into the line of fire. Penned by former showrunner Neil Labute, “Metamorphosis” introduces Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica; Lucifer) as the seductive Count Dracula now freed from the prison realm in which Abraham Van Helsing trapped her a century ago and brings the Dark One to the forefront of the story. Liam Neeson stars as a grizzled snow plough driver on a bloody revenge spree in Hans Petter Moland’s English-language remake of his 2014 Norwegian thriller, In Order of Disappearance. As such, Moland sticks closely to the template of his original film (even the running times are identical), but some of the jet-black humour appears to have been lost in translation.
Neeson plays Nels Coxman, a humble snow plough driver in Kehoe, who’s recently been voted Citizen of the Year. When his adult son Kyle is killed by a vicious drug gang, Nels embarks on a violent revenge quest, murdering his way up the Kehoe crime hierarchy until he has druglord Trevor “Viking” Calcote (Tom Bateman) in his sights. "Oh no... I think I cut myself!" Netflix has released another official trailer for their comedy The Package, which is now available, the latest film from Funny or Die filmmaker Jake Szymanski (Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates). The wacky, stupid comedy is about a group of teenage friends who go on a spring break camping trip, but an accident causes them to change their plans in hopes of saving their friend. Yeah, it's dumb and made for teenagers to get drunk and laugh at. The full cast for this includes Daniel Doheny, Geraldine Viswanathan, Sadie Calvano, Luke Spencer Roberts, Eduardo Franco, Michael Eklund, Gary Jones, Alexander Calvert, Sugar Lyn Beard, and Blake Anderson. As for the cast, it stars Daniel Doheny, Geraldine Viswanathan, Sadie Calvano, Luke Spencer Roberts, Eduardo Franco, Michael Eklund, Gary Jones, Alexander Calvert, Sugar Lyn Beard, and Blake Anderson.

The first season of BBC America's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency earned pretty low ratings, but that's generally true of shows on this little cable channel. The thing is, these series often originate in UK, or are international co-productions of some sort. In the case of this show, Netflix distributes it outside the Us, so their continue interest comes into play where cancellations or renewals are concerned. So, will Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *full disclosure: an online screener of The Sound was provided by the film's publicity arm. **there are spoilers here. Director/writer: Jenna Mattison. Cast: Rose McGowan, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Eklund. Sometimes, reviews serve as a warning. That is the case with Jenna Mattison's The Sound. Her sophomore feature is a cliche-ridden, very flawed feature. The plot barely progresses from paranormal skeptic, investigating an underground subway tunnel. Instead, it stalls out through much of Act I and II, even into the final act. Barely anything happens as Kelly, played by Rose McGowan, struggles with her own mental instability and disbelief. Meanwhile, the protagonist is nearly one dimensional. And, this viewer wonders, with the lack of scares and gore: who is this horror film was really meant for? Maybe, there is a growing child horror fan base, out there. For everyone else, you need to skip the subway train station that says: "The Sound.

The Sound trailer shows the unusual team-up of Rose McGowan and Christopher Lloyd as paranormal investigators.
While The Conjuring films may have rejuvenated the box office viability of the paranormal horror genre, a smaller scale movie, called The Sound, comes to the table with something unique: Rose McGowan and Christopher Llloyd teaming up to battle a malevolent spirit.
Video of The Sound Official Trailer
The Sound trailer centres on McGowan’s Kelly Johansen, a passionate skeptic of the paranormal who, armed with an expertise in acoustics, utilises soundwaves as the primary tool of reports that she posts online. However, the debunking activities lead her to a case in an abandoned subway – built on a graveyard – in which a purportedly hoaxed suicide occurred 40 years earlier.
Ironically, the case not only uncovers paranormal proof, but makes Kelly the target of a malevolent spirit, forcing her to see disturbing imagery and memories.

The first trailer for The Sound was released earlier this year. Now, the film has a theatrical release, through Samuel Goldwyn Films. The Sound will show in select theatres, in late September. The film stars: Rose McGowan, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Eklund. In the film, a researcher and skeptic investigates an old underground tunnel, which is believed to be haunted. She finds something worse than she could have ever imagined deep below the city streets. As well, a new, updated trailer is available for the film. Several productions stills are also hosted here. The latest material shows Kelly (McGowan) alone in the big city. Once in an abandoned station, she runs into a custodian (Lloyd). She uses acoustics to localize strange sounds. Then, a supernatural entity finds her, while Kelly unearths the tunnel's dark history. The stills show more of the film's characters. Actor Michael Eklund is shown as Detective Richards.
