Wild man director Ken Russell struck back against commercial indifference with this alternately elegant and outrageous horror offering, that excepting a few hard- ‘R’ moments, comes off as a real (snake) charmer. Few horror movies have a real sense of wit, and fewer still can laugh at themselves without crumbling into sad parody. Matt Le Tissier was on Countdown today (September 30), and he surprised a lot of people by winning with an impressive 105 points.
He was joined by fellow ex-footballer Graeme Le Saux, who was in Dictionary Corner.
Here's a selection of some of the online bafflement that accompanied the appearances:

With How to Train Your Dragon 2 Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Feature and his nutty Fxx comedy Man Seeking Woman in the midst of its first season, January has been a big month for Jay Baruchel. But if the actor has his way, this is only the start of a truly massive year; during an interview with Collider, Baruchel revealed that he’s hoping to make his feature directorial debut on Random Acts of Violence sometime in 2015.
An adaptation of the comic by Jonah Hex scribes Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, Random Acts of Violence will center on two comic-book writers who hit the road to promote their new character Slasherman. When real bodies start piling up in ways that mirror the murderous creation’s work on the page, though, the two realize that Slasherman may have taken on a life of his own.

The day is finally here. Some of us have been waiting decades to catch a glimpse of Clive Barker’s intended vision of his 1990 epic monster movie, Nightbreed. Some of us got close with the Cabal Cut, but that still wasn’t his intended vision. It was long-thought to be an impossibility, thanks to both studio interference, as well as mishandling of the original elements. Hell, when Scream Factory announced the title, most of us assumed we would be getting the Cabal Cut, including the awful-looking footage sourced from VHS. I feel like, when the announcement was made that all of the materials they needed were located in a vault somewhere, a big enough deal wasn’t made. I see people every day, disappointed that The Cabal Cut isn’t what we’re getting with this release. These people don’t understand that Barker’s Director’s Cut is superior...

On October 28th, Scream Factory will unleash the long-awaited Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut, allowing viewers to finally experience the monsters of Midian the way writer/director Clive Barker intended. To help hold horror hounds over until the release, Scream Factory has unveiled a high-definition clip that shows Craig Sheffer’s Aaron Boone getting a call from David Cronenberg’s Dr. Decker:
“We begin with an official statement from Clive Barker’s team on this extraordinary project: “The Nightbreed Director’s Cut is an entirely different film than the one which was released in theaters. Its 20 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, but it contains over 40 minutes of new and altered footage. Clive oversaw the reconstruction and edit himself, personally ensuring that, at long last, he was able to tell the story he always wanted to tell, but until now, had never been given the chance. Once the scenes were reordered,...

The werewolf film is a strange thing. You’d think, being such a well-known movie monster, that there would be millions of examples of the type. However, there is not. I’m not even saying that there aren’t a ton of examples of great werewolf films, I’m saying there are barely any werewolf films at all. A long time ago, we did an article on this site to coincide with the theatrical release of one of the Twilight sequels. It was a list of 30 films, 15 of which were werewolf films, and 15 of them were vampire films, to watch instead of seeing the new Twilight. The hardest part about finding 15 worthy vampire films, was narrowing it down to 15. The hardest part of putting together a list of 15 sold werewolf films was a different beast entirely. It was hard to put together even a list of 15 mediocre werewolf films. Sure,...

Despite not being nominated for Best Director, Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle managed to pull off what we thought was the impossible (our Leora Heilbronn has pegged the drama as the film that should win, but favored Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy as the best bet) winning Best Motion Picture at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (a.k.a Canadian Oscars). If the out of synch supposed “live” telecast wasn’t bad enough (all awards including the winning film were announced almost one hour prior to on twittersphere), the show’s producers gave Gabrielle winning producers Luc Déry and Kim McCraw the equivalent of end of toilette paper roll in terms of time.

Cloud to Ground marks former Zeppelin member's first album in collaboration with Norwegian ambient musician Helge Sten
Minibus Pimps, the musical coupling of Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and Norwegian ambient musician Helge Sten, are set to release their debut album, Cloud to Ground. Due out on 3 March via Norwegian label SusannaSonata, the seven-track record marks the duo's debut release since they first started playing live together in 2011.
Cloud to Ground incorporates sounds generated by Kyma, a computer-based sound-design system that mutates organic instrument recordings. It was the same system that sound designer Ben Burtt used to create lonely robot Wall-e's voice in the 2008 CGI Pixar film and informs the album's electronic explorations of noise and rhythm. The new release will also feature tracks that were recorded during Minibus Pimps' live performances that have taken place in venues from Denmark to Norway to London. Sten, a prolific producer...

Separate Tables
Directed by Lin Snider and Justin Bennett
Out of the Box Theatre Company
West End Theater , 263 West 86th Street, NYC
October 2-5, 2013 (Closed)
If you know of stage play more perfectly realized than Out of the Box Theatre's polished realization of Terence Rattigan's Separate Tables, let me know and I will rush to see it. However, that is unlikely, as co-directors Lin Snider and Justin Bennett have created a profound rarity indeed: a flawless production. Everything about this rendering of Rattigan's play, which opened in London in 1954 and on Broadway in 1956, is sheer perfection: every performance, the set, the costumes, the invisible effortless direction, the brief musical interludes -- all make for one of the most exhilarating evenings of theater I have ever experienced. It is unfortunate that such a fine production was limited to only six performances: a production of this outstanding caliber deserved a much longer run,...

It`s the May Two-Four weekend here in Canada; named so because it is a long weekend and a two-four is a case of beer; which we Canadians consume many of on a long weekend - not that we need an excuse. So excuse while we`re a couple days behind on this. Anchor Bay UK and Canada, along with our friends at Raven Banner Entertainment, acquired the Canadian and UK rights for veteran effects creator Paul Jones` directorial debut Buzzkill. "We are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with Anchor Bay, from Canadian distribution of acquired titles to our own in-house productions", said Raven Banner managing partner James Fler.Anchor Bay Canada general manager Rob Herholz added: "Buzzkill represents a great collaboration between Raven Banner, Anchor Bay Canada and...

Manborg was released to DVD this week by Dark Sky Films. Directed by Steven Kostanski, the movie has characters and a style straight out of a 90′s video game, and was inspired by his love of 80′s and 90′s genre films. I had a chance to interview Steven Kostanski, who told me about the challenges of getting this project finished, the movies that served as his inspiration, and his surprise that Manborg already has a cult following:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. Can you tell our readers about your work in special makeup effects? Specifically, what have you done on Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, and Resident Evil: Retribution?
Steven Kostanski: I started working in prosthetic make-up effects right after graduating high school. I worked on lots of low budget horror movies and a few tv shows before moving out to Toronto where I...

We’re excited to feature none other than Lori Cardille, the inimitable Sarah from George A. Romero’s 1985 horror masterpiece Day Of The Dead. Cardille’s strong, single minded and yet still vulnerable lead in Romero’s beloved third “Dead” film is inarguably one of the most important female characters in horror and the woman who played her is a delight. Lori is looking forward to hanging out in the romantic and garish Niagara Falls setting and meeting some of her devoted fanbase.
Also joining the roster is David Prowse, the man known best as Darth Vader who is beloved by horror fans for his double-shot turns as the Frankenstein Monster in Hammer’s Evil Of Frankenstein and Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell as well as Vampire Circus.
Also on the still-expanding bill is author Kier-La Janisse (House Of Psychotic Women), Fango editor Chris Alexander and the cast of...

Organized by Fango contributor John Nicol and myself, Fangoria’S Black Sunday at Club 3030 was a splendid affair, packed with pundits poured into costumes of all kinds and featuring FX man Paul Jones, who brought his Red Pyramid suit from Silent Hill: Revelation and made up one of the bartenders as a Sh nurse. Paul and I even hosted a wild, barely controlled costume contest.
The substances flowed freely, the vintage pinball machines dinged and the music blasted until the wee hours. A good time was had by all, with Canadian Fango freaks and new converts sharing space and braving Sandy’s wrath (yes, up here we also took a smaller smack from the storm).
Thanks to Fango fotographer and contributor David Goodfellow, we even have the pics to prove that the party was legit. Have a look…

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D opened in theaters today and we’ve been running a number of special features to let you know more about the movie. Last night we published our interview session with Adelaide Clemens and we now have our talk with director Michael J. Bassett. Continue reading to learn about his experience working with 3D, familiar characters that return for the sequel, and what direction he’d take a third movie:
Can you tell us about shooting this film in 3D? Was it always your intention to make it a 3D movie?
Michael J. Bassett: This was always going to be a 3D movie, but I came into the project a little bit leery about it, to be honest. Bright animation and 3D work beautifully, but this is a horror movie and it was a challenge to figure out how to make dark and 3D work together.

It’s been many years since our last visit to Silent Hill on the big screen, but I find myself returning to the original film often in the comfort of my own home when I’m looking for a moody, atmospheric creepfest… and I know I’m not alone.
With legions of fans of the first film and millions more fans of the video games, there was more than enough reason to unleash Pyramid Head and those odd sexy, stabby nurses once more. Dread Central sat down with Michael J. Bassett, director of Silent Hill: Revelation (review), to find out what’s on tap... in 3D!!

A hotel guest who fled without paying his bill has been tracked down using DNA found on the toothbrush he left behind. Trainee plasterer Stephen Evans, 29, checked into a £32-a-night guesthouse in his hometown of Llandudno, Wales under a false name and address in June, claiming to be "Paul Jones of Chester". He told the receptionist that he would be staying for three nights, but left the hotel after two days without paying for his stay, the Daily Mail reports. Police noticed the toothbrush in his room when they were called to investigate. They had it forensically tested and discovered a DNA match on the police database. "He was arrested and said he was homeless at the time because (more)...

Peter Berg isn't afraid of infusing political commentary into his films.. Both "The Kingdom" and "Battleship" focus on the U.S. military, and his upcoming film, "Lone Survivor," deals heavily with the Navy SEALs.
Berg, whose father was a Naval historian, says his work provides him with a unique connection to American Armed Forces personnel -- and an insight into their political views.
"I have a lot of friends who are in the military, particularly who are in the Navy Seal community, who are generally Republicans," Berg told THR. "And I’ve had many conversations where a lot of my Republican friends admit reluctantly that the military has given them freedoms that they’ve never experienced before. And Obama really is a warrior in chief. He’s not afraid to get the job done. And I think that’s an important story. I believe in that."

For these two men, Warner Bros. put them at a crossroads. Director Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan) had been wanting to make the live-action remake of Akira, despite legions of anime fans crying out for his blood. At the same time across the studio, actor Bradley Cooper, coming off of his two blockbuster Hangover films, wanted to try something more serious and wanted to play the Devil himself, Lucifer, in Paradise Lost, not knowing there are a lot of people who truly believe he is the Devil. Both projects were canceled by Warner Bros. (and the fans were pleased). Still, that doesn't mean Warner Bros. didn't have a consolation prize (aka Robert Zemeckis and Brad Bird's sloppy seconds) - Here There Be Monsters.

The studio that brought us classic monster movies during the 1930s to the late 1940s has been resurrecting their fearless creatures for remakes like 2010's "The Wolfman" starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. Now, Variety brings news that the studio wants to reboot their "Mummy" franchise (again!), and they've hired "Prometheus" writer Jon Spaihts to pen the feature.
You probably remember the 1990's take on "The Mummy" starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. "The Scorpion King" was the 2002 spin-off starring then action newb Dwayne Johnson, which saw equal success. Fraser made his way back to the story in 2008's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," which raked in $401 million worldwide. Judging by the numbers, the studio feels there is still life left in the ancient corpse. So where does scribe Spaihts want to take things? Back in February, in the wake of the amazing success of Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol, it was thrilling to hear that director Brad Bird might be preparing another live-action film, taking over the sea monster project Here There Be Monsters that had originally been developed by Robert Zemeckis. The word back in February was merely that Bird was contemplating taking on the film, so I guess we can't be too surprise or disappointed that Bird seems just as quickly to have moved on. Now the word at Vulture is that Jaume Collet-Serra, who made the thrillers Orphan and Unknown, is in negotiations to take over the project, with plans to offer the leading role to Bradley Cooper. Though the drama of the story revolves around a giant squid in the North Atlantic, Cooper would be playing real-life Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones. He gets stripped of his British...

Jaume Collet-Serra, director of Orphan and Unknown, is the current director in talks to take over Here There Be Monsters at Warner Bros. Also in line is Bradley Cooper who would star as Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones. But the fact that a star is already lined up gives a little more green to this light. The screenplay was written by Brian Helgeland (Man...

Revolutionary Squid Fighter: This sounds crazy, but bear with us, because this could be good. Bradley Cooper will (eventually) be offered the lead role of Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones in Here There Be Monsters, based on a script by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Green Zone) in which Jones investigates the disappearnce of merchant ships in the North Atlantic; a giant squid is the chief suspect (?!). Jaume Collett-Serra (Unknown, Orphan) is now in negotiations to direct; past possible helmsmen included Robert Zemeckis and Brad Bird. [Vulture] Laugh at the Wolf Boy: Oh boy! As if you needed more reasons (not) to see Grown Ups 2, the forthcoming sequel to Adam Sandler’s highly popular (alleged) comedy, Taylor Lautner (Twilight) has now been added to the cast. He...

Jaume Collet-Serra is the latest name to enter talks to direct the period adventure movie Here There Be Monsters. The movie once had Robert Zemeckis and Brad Bird attached to direct, but since both passed on the project, Collet-Serra was next inline to direct the movie for Legendary Pictures. Though he isn’t as well known as the two aforementioned directors, Collet-Serra was tapped to direct the lieve action-adaptation of Akira and he is prepping a new vision of the Dracula story, Harker, with Russell Crowe.
According to Vulture, Collet-Serra is in negotiations to direct the long-gestating project that seems to have trouble getting into production. This would also include a couple of rewrites on the Brian Helgeland script. Ironically Collet-Serra was to have helmed the live-action Akira movie, which would have been distributed by Warner Bros., the very studio that will distribute Here There Be Monsters. "Unknown" and "Orphan" helmer Jaume Collet-Serra is in negotiations to direct the long-gestating history-meets-Lovecraftian beasties mashup "Here There Be Monsters" at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures says Vulture.
The story follows Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones, but throws in tentacled monsters of the deep to the mix. An offer is out to Bradley Cooper to play Jones.
Brian Helgeland penned the script in which Jones is wrongly stripped of his British naval commission and is hired by a shipping magnate to investigate the disappearance of merchant ships in the North Atlantic. Jones and his crew suspect that it's the handiwork of a sea monster and have to fight to survive it.

Giant sea creature adventure Here There Be Monsters has been slinking around the development oceans for a year or so now, and the latest director to turn his periscope towards the project is Jaume Collet-Serra. The man who brought the world Orphan and Unknown has been part of Warner Bros. long-running attempt to bring Akira into the live-action world. But with that one stalled to sort out its spiralling budget, the director is looking around for other projects. Last July, it was Robert Zemeckis. Then, back in February,...
