If you have been captivated and mystified by the JonBenét Ramsey murder case for the past three decades, then a new Netflix documentary series will definitely have a place on your watch list in November 2024. The series will dive deep into one of the most infamous American cold cases.
According to Deadline, Netflix will release Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey on Monday, Nov. 25. The all-new documentary series contains three episodes and comes from director Joe Berlinger, who's known for his true crime documentaries and docuseries.
On Dec. 25, 1996, JonBenét's parents discovered that their daughter was missing. A ransom note was left in their home and the six year old's body was later found in the basement. The tragedy was ruled a homicide, but despite various leads throughout the years, the mystery has not been solved.

In 2006, director Richard Linklater made his first foray into science fiction with a film adaptation of "A Scanner Darkly," the 1977 novel by Philip K. Dick. Dick's original story delved deeply -- and with first-hand knowledge -- into the bleak world of drug addicts. Dick has spoken frankly about his drug use, and one can see his paranoia caused by psychedelic drug experiences influencing his work, specifically in novels like "Valis" and "The Transmigration of Timothy Archer," but they are most explicit in "A Scanner Darkly." In the future of the novel, the protagonist is addicted to a hallucinogen called Substance D, and there seems to be no workable social system in place that is capable of solving widespread drug use in America.
Linklater's film version of "A Scanner Darkly" was made 29 years after Dick's story was published, but the themes remained depressingly relevant. The film takes place in the future...

It’s generally understood that science fiction stories say more about the moment in which they were written than the future that they dare to imagine. That’s why it doesn’t matter that we’re long past the original setting of futuristic classics like Blade Runner or even Back to the Future Part II, as these stories remain fascinating precisely because of their dated perspectives on the future.
Of course, that’s not to say that there aren’t a handful of technological prophets out there who can tap into universal fears and anxieties that continue to be relevant no matter how far our species marches into the future. A great example of this is Philip K. Dick’s 1977 novel A Scanner Darkly, a timeless autobiographical parable about paranoia and America’s war on drugs disguised as a sci-fi novel.

We mustn’t dwell… no, not today, not on Rex Manning Day. Today marks the 30th anniversary of Rex Manning Day, the fictional day celebrated in the Allan Moyle disaffected teen comedy Empire Records. Rex Manning Day is celebrated to honor the memory and legacy of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who on April 8th was found dead in his Seattle mansion on Lake Washington Boulevard from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after dying on April 5, 1994.
Directed by Allan Moyle, Empire Records takes place over twenty-four hours in the lives of the young employees at Empire Records when they all grow up and become young adults, thanks to each other and the manager. Dripping with attitude, pining, and real-life drama, Empire Records taps into the struggles of a generation by exploring social pressure, the importance of found family, and the power of music as a healing tool. Written by Carol Heikkinen, Empire Records stars Anthony Lapaglia,...

This post contains spoilers for episode one of "Reacher" season 2.
After a long wait, Alan Ritchson's Reacher is finally back for more punching-bad-guys-really-hard in the face action. This time, there's one particular bad guy who is surely heading for one of the most epic "Reacher" beatings yet.
Prior to the second season's debut, it was announced that Robert Patrick had replaced Rory Cochrane in the role of Shane Langston, a former NYPD detective who now heads up security for a private defense contractor. While Langston doesn't appear in "Bad Luck and Trouble," the book on which "Reacher" season 2 is based, he seems to be a version of the character Allen Lamaison, an ex-LAPD officer who, in the novel, became the director of the defense contractor New Age. Either way, it's obvious from the inaugural episode of season 2 that Langston has something to do with the insidious plot to...

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Oculus and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Of all the horror creators currently working in the business, few have the ability to tear at our heartstrings like Mike Flanagan. Beginning with the 2018 hit miniseries The Haunting of Hill House, the director’s horrific Netflix shows are just as likely to elicit cathartic sobs as hysterical screams. However, with a cast of unlikeable characters and a cavalcade of grisly deaths, Flanagan’s newest series The Fall of the House of Usher may signal a return to the grim horror of his early career. Films like Absentia, Hush, and Ouija: Original of Evil all center harsh and unforgiving stories – a gut punch rather than a bittersweet embrace. Perhaps the cruelest of these is Oculus, the 2013 story of a haunted mirror. Ten years after its premiere, this nihilistic movie still feels like a lean...

“One more time: animation is a medium, not a genre. Animation is film,” Guillermo del Toro said last year. IndieWire couldn’t agree more, and yet animation — an art form that requires the most precise control of the cinematic medium — is continually disrespected.
Infamously, 2022’s Best Animated Oscars presentation featured several jokes about the nominees that, in the words of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, framed “the five Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature as a corporate product for kids that parents must begrudgingly endure.” The directing duo called upon the Academy to do better by animation. And this year’s ceremony largely delivered, with less jokes that belittled animation as kiddy stuff and a sterling speech from del Toro himself for his acclaimed stop-motion feature adaptation of “Pinocchio.”
Pixar and Studio Ghibli tend to spring to mind first when discussing great animation, but there’s a world beyond those two giants.

The trailer for “Reacher” Season 2 has dropped, and this time it’s personal. The Amazon Prime series will return on December 15.
Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is pulled from his nomad lifestyle when he learns that a member of the 110th, the name of his elite group of Army Special Investigators, has been murdered. Together with some of former military allies, Reacher has to investigate who killed his friend and stop their reign of terror before it’s too late.
But the more Reacher learns about this case, the bigger the stakes become.
“They were tortured. They dumped them from a helicopter. And they’re coming after us,” an unseen character says in the Season 2 trailer.
“Good,” Reacher responds.

Gear up for a new season of Amazon’s breakout action hit Reacher, which is based on the popular novels by Lee Child that served as the basis for Tom Cruise’s attempted franchise, Jack Reacher. Although Cruise’s film adaptation was able to capitalize with the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Prime Video’s Reacher series aimed to stick closer to the novels and presents a new case for each season. For example, major characters from season one, like Roscoe and Oscar Finlay, will not play prominent roles in this season. Prime Video has just released the teaser for tomorrow’s premiere for the trailer to season 2 of the Alan Ritchson-starring drama.

Piper Laurie, the three-time Oscar-nominated actress known for her performances in The Hustler and Carrie and for her outlandish two-character, two-gender turn on the original Twin Peaks, died Saturday morning in Los Angeles. She was 91.
Laurie had not been well for some time, her rep, Marion Rosenberg, told The Hollywood Reporter.
An Emmy winner who was nominated nine times during her career, Laurie spent three years as a child in a sanatorium, broke free from her original contract at Universal Pictures, once went 15 years without making a movie and starred in the original production — for live television — of Days of Wine and Roses.
In Learning to Live Out Loud, her frank 2011 memoir, she revealed that she lost her virginity to Ronald Reagan and that she had slept with Mel Gibson when she was twice his age. Laurie wrote the book because “my life had many secrets, and it was wearing,...

Rereleased for its 30th anniversary, this is a seemingly aimless but actually brilliantly controlled movie about Texan kids in 1976
Richard Linklater’s graduating class for his breakout 1993 hit – now rereleased for its 30th anniversary – featured baby-faced high-schoolers Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, Milla Jovovich, Rory Cochrane, Cole Hauser and Adam Goldberg. Then there is Matthew McConaughey, who does not look all that much different from the way he does now, playing the older guy with a dodgy pudding bowl hairstyle and a pack of cigarettes stuffed into one of his T-shirt sleeves, creepily hanging out with kids from the school he is supposed to have left some years ago.
This is a film which drew on Altman’s Nashville – like that movie, this is set during the bicentennial of 1976, and is now nearer in time to that year than to 2023 – and Lucas’s American Graffiti. It features kids in Austin, Texas...

Daybreakers
Daybreakers is one of the most overlooked vampire movies of the modern era, but its sci-fi elements really do shine and its clinical vibes are not what you’d expect from your average bloodsucker tale. It’s inventive, entertaining, and definitely worth a look.

Reacher is returning for a second season on Prime Video, and there's been a change in casting. Robert Patrick (Peacemaker) has replaced Rory Cochrane in the action series. The switch is happening before Cochrane filmed any episodes. He had to depart the role due to a scheduling conflict.
Alan Ritchson, Maria Sten, Shaun Sipos, Serinda Swan, and Ferdinand Kingsley star in the Reacher series that revolves around a former US Army military policeman. The action drama debuted in February 2022 and was written by Nick Santora, the series' showrunner.

"Reacher" was a huge hit for Prime Video, breaking streaming records and finally giving Jack Reacher the on-screen treatment fans demanded. Naturally, "Reacher" season 2 is highly anticipated, and now there's even more reason to look forward to the show's return. As Deadline reports, veteran actor Robert Patrick joined the cast of the show before production wrapped in February, taking over a "major role" from Rory Cochrane.
Season 2 of the wildly popular series is based on Lee Child's 11th Jack Reacher book, "Bad Luck and Trouble," and it seems Patrick was brought in to play the role of Shane Langston, an ex-NYPD cop who now runs security for a private defense contractor. Cochrane reportedly left the production at the end of last year due to a "scheduling conflict" after the "Reacher" shooting schedule changed, clearing the way for Patrick — best known for his portrayal of the T-1000 in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day...

Exclusive: Robert Patrick is playing a major role opposite lead Alan Ritchson in the upcoming second season of Prime Video’s Reacher. He took over the series regular role of Shane Langston from Rory Cochrane, who was originally cast in September before exiting at the end of last year due to scheduling conflict as the production schedule changed, Deadline has learned. He had not filmed any scenes, so the recasting did not require reshoots, I hear. Production on Season 2 of Reacher wrapped in late February.
Langston is a streetwise former NYPD detective with a questionable track record who is now head of security for a private defense contractor.
From writer and showrunner Nick Santora, based on the novels by Lee Child, the series follows Jack Reacher (Ritchson), a veteran military police investigator who has just recently entered civilian life.

Boston Strangler is a thriller movie starring Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon. It is written and directed by Matt Ruskin.
Good photography, good performances… in a film that wants to be more of a vindication than a thriller and more All the President’s Men than Silence of the Lambs.
That said, Hulu and 20th Century Studios surprise with this very good, excellently set, period production.

A film that would be better called Loretta McLaughlin. Based on this journalist, who worked at the Boston Globe, the film uses the figure of the sadly infamous Boston Strangler in order to compose a whole defence statement of sexist injustices of that period that will leave thriller lovers feeling a little bit “this movie was not meant to be about that”, and those who want to see a good courtroom drama with a face of “I have not come to see...

Do you recall what kind of viewing was all the rage when most of us were stuck indoors during the big pandemic a couple of years ago? Well, aside from a fictional fable of a chess whiz, it was true crime streaming TV. Of course, many folks still love to binge these often multipart documentaries. And one has become a docudrama, about that Tiger King. A good number of them concern that thriller staple of the last three or four decades, the serial killer. So when did this “boogeyman” enter the zeitgeist? You could go all the way back to Jack the Ripper. Well, this new film is about his American cousin who was a terror of the early 1960s.

“Where were you in ’76?” The newest entrant in Criterion’s 4K disc club is Richard Linklater’s rowdy but affectionate ode to high school nostalgia, Texas-style. It’s a Bicentennial summer update of American Graffiti and in just 14 years the entire face of America has changed. Youth idealism is dead and the main rule is to avoid plans made by parents. Linklater’s graduation night sticks with kids free to roam on their own and have a wild time. He has a terrific way with performances that include a string of memorable faces that became much better-known, plus a couple of future stars.

"Empire Records" is a movie that not a ton of people saw, but many of us who came up in the late '90s/early aughts remember the 1995 film quite fondly. The movie was directed by Allan Moyle (who will always be my hero for giving us "Pump Up the Volume") from a screenplay by Carol Heikkinen. It centers on a day -- Rex Manning Day! -- in the life of a ragtag group of record store employees as they try to stop their shop, Empire Records, from becoming just another Music Town.
I worked at an independent music store in the early 2000s, one that was doomed to eventually be sold to a large chain. I have clear memories of all of us saying, "Damn the man. Save the Empire!" on more than one occasion. Sadly, there was no saving CD World and we were all soon out of...

Creative people can find inspiration from a wide variety of places. Stepping out of your comfort zone, nature, personal or physical obstacles, and the arts are just a few areas that could lead to your next great creation. But more often than not, you need not look further than the people and places around you to find your next story or characters. And that's exactly what screenwriter Carol Heikkinen did when she wrote the script for "Empire Records."
The cult classic teen movie about a group of young people that work at a record store was based on her days as an employee at the Tower Records in Phoenix, Arizona's Christown Mall. The first draft was written on spec over the course of a few weeks and was sold about a week after completion in a bidding war. But that version of the story was pretty different from the one that ended up onscreen.

Anyone who has ever taken a single fiction writing class knows that successful stories typically include a person or people with a problem and a bumpy ride through that problem that hints at a universal truth or life lesson. It sounds a bit stale and cliche on paper, but it's a winning formula that was coined "The Hero's Journey" by Joseph Campbell back in 1949. The method can be traced back to ancient times and continues to pop up in literature and film. As an audience, we love to watch protagonists struggle, even suffer, as long as it leads to an interesting journey and a positive change. We give the film bonus points if you find a way to make the character and their journey relatable.
It's fun to watch larger-than-life characters like Tony Stark begin as a cocky arms dealer and evolve into a world savior, but a protagonist's journey...

Mike Flanagan has a gift for creating emotionally-resonant horror dramas that reveal something essential about the human condition. The creator of "The Haunting of Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" shot to fame with the aid of several horror entries throughout the years. Be it his hauntingly surreal "Gerald's Game" or his dark, intriguing "Doctor Sleep," Flanagan's body of work has exemplified that horror does not have to be overly reliant on jump scares to be effective. The horror director is currently on a steady path toward releasing two highly-anticipated Netflix series, namely "The Midnight Club" and "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Back in 2005, Flanagan directed a horror short named "Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan," in which a young man named Tim is driven insane after he interacts with a cursed mirror. While this premise was interesting enough, it was too one-dimensional to be stretched into a full-length feature.
