Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) stars as the bumbling Bernie Christian alongside Alicia Silverstone (Perpetrator) as his beleaguered wife Eva. The cast also includes Jan Bijvoet, Gaite Jansen, Walt Klink and Kevin Connolly.
The ’90s sitcom setup quickly derails when a trio of Russian criminals arrive; shocking violence and chaos ensues.
The movie debuted in Sundance’s The Midnights section and then made its European premiere in Rotterdam’s Limelight section this weekend.

Remember that scene in Natural Born Killers in which the Juliette Lewis character enters a Married… with Children-style sitcom, with Rodney Dangerfield playing her dad? Imagine a whole movie based on that concept, add tons of violence and gore — not to mention gags about Christ and Catholicism, a tray-full of crystal meth and, in one late sequence, a dog that gets decapitated by a shotgun blast — and you’ll get an idea of what’s in store while watching the Sundance Midnight selection, Krazy House.
As over-the-top as that already sounds, the film is even more exhausting to sit through — like a hard-r Saturday Night Live sketch that’s been taken way too far, to the point you’re just hoping that it stops. Relentless and off-putting, the English-language debut of Dutch hitmakers Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is unlikely to land a wide audience in the U.

Modeled on a late-’80s/early-’90s American family sitcom — which soon transitions to a midnight splatterfest — the tongue-in-cheek Dutch production “Krazy House” has all the transgressive stylings of a 15 year-old’s Reddit post on an atheism forum in 2010. Directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil offer ideas of subversion that feel both long-outdated in concept and completely dull in execution, to the point that merely describing the film feels irresponsible, lest its premise accidentally lure curious viewers to the cinema.
Nick Frost plays Bernie Christian, the pointedly-named patriarch of a throwback family sitcom. With his zeal for Jesus sweaters and his living-room church organ, Bernie plays the bumbling househusband to his successful businesswoman wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), and father to his diligent scientist son Adam (Walt Klink) and moody shut-in daughter Sarah (Gaite Jansen). The fictitious show comes complete with an opening musical theme and studio audience laughter,...

The definition of satire is flexible, but not quite flexible enough to accommodate “Krazy House.” This bloody, anarchic hand grenade of a film is just straight-up blasphemous, opening with a brushed-aluminum shot of a cop plugging a nun full of bullets and escalating from there. Like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers, the latest feature from Dutch comedy duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil takes sneering pleasure in giving the middle finger to God in hyper-violent, absurdist fashion.
The Adult Swim bit is baked into the premise of the movie, which takes place entirely within the confines of a sound stage reminiscent of the set from “Married…With Children.” The sitcom-within-the-film is called, naturally, “Krazy House.” It revolves around the Christian family, which is composed of standard-issue archetypes: bucktoothed bumbler Bernie (Nick Frost); his wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), who’s naturally way out of his league...

The logline for writers/directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s Krazy House reads like the perfect gonzo midnighter for the horror crowd. The initial setup is meant to skewer the zaniness of ’90s sitcoms, complete with a live studio audience and aspect ratio to match. But that premise quickly goes off the rails, not in a good way, stretching a short film concept into a grueling slog of empty shock value.
Complete with an opening theme song and credits, Krazy House introduces the Christian family. Bernie (Nick Frost) serves as the oafish but well-meaning dad, the polar opposite of his neurotic workaholic wife, Eva (Alicia Silverstone). Then there’s his gum-swallowing daughter Sarah (Gaite Jansen) and science-obsessed son Adam (Walt Klink), both unamused by Bernie’s clumsiness and steadfast devotion to Jesus Christ. It’s only house pup Angel that seems not to mind Bernie’s sitcom hijinks.

The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most highly respected film festivals in the world, and while the horror genre generally doesn’t seem to receive as much respect as it deserves, horror has had a steady presence at Sundance over the years. In fact, just last year the Sundance horror line-up included the likes of Infinity Pool, Talk to Me, My Animal, and Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. The Sundance 2024 line-up was revealed earlier today (you can see the list Here) – and there again a good number of horror movies included in the program.
Below you can take a closer look at some of the horror movies that will be showing at Sundance 2024, with images to go along with each one of them.
Of course, most of the horror can be found in the Midnight program:

"Close your eyes. Do you hear it?" Listen attentively to the ways of the woods... An atmospheric horror short from the Netherlands is now available to watch online - it's worth a watch even if you're not that into horror. Darker is made by a Dutch filmmaker named Frank van den Bogaart, and it premiered at many film festivals last year. It won Best International Short at HorrorFest Intl. in Utah, and the young girl who stars also won Best Performance at the Brooklyn Horror Fest. Here's the intro: Rhena's father tells a story about Atlas, a forest entity that whispers stories of the dead to its trees. That same night he disappears into this forest. Rhena does everything she can to get her father back... This has the same kind of dark, creepy vibes as Pan's Labyrinth or The Green Knight. Starring Adriana Bakker as Rhena and the great...

The Dutch comedy duo of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil have a new project heading our way -- and it stars some pretty recognizable faces. Nick Frost has been tapped to lead the pair's first English-language feature, which is already gaining some pretty intense buzz. In a statement to Variety, Haars and van der Kuil said, "It's a dream come true working with this amazing, talented cast on our most insane movie yet." That's one hell of a claim considering these are the folks who made the cocktail of absurdity and vulgarity known as "Ron Goossens, Low Budget Stuntman."
Frost also spoke with Variety and said, "'Krazy House' has been a completely bonkers project to be a part of and I've absolutely loved every minute of it." This is also certainly quite a claim, as Nick Frost is somewhat synonymous with wild, wacky, and wonderful comedy films.

In the opening scene of Chino Moya’s grimmer-than-Grimm dystopian fairy tale collection, “Undergods,” a pair of grungy near-future garbagemen scour the ruins of a ghostly former metropolis looking for bodies. Like the Black Plague cleanup crew in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” — the occasionally too-efficient “bring out your dead!” guys — it doesn’t matter whether the corpses they come across are even fully deceased: The collectors toss the bodies into the back of their cart either way. Should the poor souls turn out to still be alive, they can always sell them for precious cans of scarce food back at the depot.
Moya’s vision may be bleak — and “vision” is the right word to describe the Spanish-born director’s stunning capacity to create images and atmosphere — but there’s something unnervingly familiar about the world he creates in his feature debut. Between that twisted introductory vignette and...

I’ve mentioned it many times before but I really enjoy a good anthology movie. I’m not sure exactly why but from the classic eighties horror anthologies to the more modern takes on genres, they always grab my attention. Undergods manages to have a style and tone like no other anthology I have seen before.
The ‘wrap-around’ works much better than many other anthology movies, as we see two street scavengers, K & Z, who are loading dead bodies into their truck while chatting about their dreams. These chats lead to the other ‘segments’ of the movie. This wrap-around introduces us to the world that it is all set in. A bleak, industrial ‘future’ that is full of grey,...

"It hasn't finished yet..." Lightbulb Film Dist. has released a full UK trailer for the dystopian fantasy-thriller Undergods, which originally premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year (view a promo trailer from then). The film played at the Glasgow Film Festival in February and went on to receive two BIFA (British Independent Film Award) noms. In a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world, K and Z roam the streets on the lookout for corpses and something even more valuable - fresh meat. What follows is a series of narratives, overlapping and weaving through time & space with remarkable grace & ease. The threads come together elegantly as stories layer upon each other & crescendo towards a powerful, satisfying conclusion. The key cast includes Kate Dickie, Ned Dennehy, Geza Rohrig, Adrian Rawlins, and an especially crazed Jan Bijvoet. This looks delightfully unique & kooky, still not sure what to make of it but I'm certainly intrigued. Here's...

In a desolate and decrepit cityscape, presumably in the time after some unspecified apocalypse, K (Johann Myers) and Z (Géza Röhrig) drive a garbage truck, picking up the dead bodies that lie strewn along their route. This is just the framing device for writer/director Chino Moya’s first feature, which drifts and digresses into other stories, all centring on a man whose familial equilibrium is disrupted by the sudden arrival of an outsider. A neighbour (Ned Dennehy) shows up at Ron (Michael Gould) and Ruth’s (Hayley Carmichael) door; a foreign inventor (Jan Bijvoet) proposes a project to Hans (Eric Godon) and Dom’s (Adrian Rawlins) life is turned upside down when his wife Rachel’s (Kate Dickie) first husband (Sam Louwyck) mysteriously reappears after fifteen years.
In the stories involving married couples, Moya seems to be building an allegory about the lack of communication, drawing parallels between the...

We all like to think we have control—kings of our proverbial castles. It’s all a ruse, though. We’re actually slaves to a system that seems more and more likely to fail with each new day and each new declaration that its imminent demise is a call to arms to save it rather than move on and evolve. That false sense of control is thus a mechanism we use to combat the fear of knowing how little we truly possess. We dream of other men failing so as not to realize that unfortunate soul is probably a future version of ourselves. We play God opposite those we believe are beneath us because we feel the pressure of those above doing the same. And there’s absolutely no way out.
Filmmaker Chino Moya is optimistic, though. Rather than present his debut feature Undergods as an unavoidably prescient vision of where we’re headed,...

"What is this place?" Fantasia has released a promo trailer for the wickedly strange film Undergods, an "otherworldly journey through a Europe in decline" film premiering at the genre festival this summer. Chino Moya's debut feature Undergods "places viewers in a foreign futuristic world, though sadly one that feels more familiar every day. The film's narrators maneuver through a deserted, crumbling, grayish-blue city, gathering bodies as they go and sharing nightmarish stories of a long-ago abandoned past. What follows is a series of narratives, overlapping and weaving through time and space with remarkable grace and ease. The threads come together elegantly as stories layer upon each other & crescendo towards a powerful, satisfying conclusion." The key cast includes Kate Dickie, Ned Dennehy, Geza Rohrig, Adrian Rawlins, and an especially crazed Jan Bijvoet. Not quite sure what to make of this, but I'm certainly intrigued! Have a look. The trailer for Chino Moya's Undergods is brilliant. It doesn't give anything away but builds enough intrigue and mystery to capture attention.
Billed as "An otherworldly journey through a Europe in decline," the film is a collection of darkly humorous tales connected by a visit from a stranger. The stories are set in varying eras, featuring a mix of reality and fantasy along with a cast from across Europe including Kate Dickie (The Witch), Ned Dennehy (Mandy), Geza Rohrig (Son of Saul), Adrian Rawlins (Chernobyl), and Jan Bijvoet (Borgman).
It's a weird and creepy trailer which reveals little of the convoluted story, aside from the suggestion that this may be bookended as a story being told to a child, Princess Bride...

Make your own exit plan for Exit Plan, a Danish downer from director Jonas Alexander Arnby, who clearly thinks the indisputable charisma of star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will be enough to sustain our interest. He’s wrong. This solid actor who won an Emmy nomination for playing Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones hides his movie-star looks behind nerdy glasses and a moustache to play Max, an insurance claims adjuster. There’s nothing special about Max’s life at home with wife, Laerke (Tuva Novotny), and their cat Simba, except his desire to end it.

“Exit Plan” has been retitled from “Suicide Tourist” for its U.S. release, and while the original monicker was certainly punchier, the new one perhaps better captures the gist of a movie that’s ultimately a little too polite and vague to make much of its intriguing premise.
A second feature collaboration between director Jonas Alexander Arnby and writer Rasmus Birch, it is another enigmatic, aesthetically precise toying with genre material — this time more kinda-sorta sci-fi than the quasi-horror of 2014’s “When Animals Dream.” But again, the Danish duo seem more interested in chilly atmospherics and idiosyncratic details than narrative cogency or psychological depth. Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a terminally ill man who commits himself to a mysterious, isolated resort for assisted suicide, . Screen Media is launching it on VOD and in available theaters June 12.

"Stay forever." Gravitas Ventures has revealedthe new Us trailer for an indie horror survival thriller titled Motel Acacia, the latest from Malaysian-Filipino filmmaker Bradley Liew (Singing in Graveyards). In the cold west, Motel Acacia is tasked with exterminating immigrants by the government through a bed, haunted with the spirit of a Filipino tree demon, that eats men and impregnates women. A young Filipino man, Jc, is groomed by his tyrannical father to take over the business. But he risks losing his own humanity to try and stop what's happening. The horror film stars Jc Santos, Jan Bijvoet, Nicholas Saputra, Agot Isidro, Vithaya Pansringarm, Bront Palarae, and Talia Zucker. This looks totally gnarly! Wtf! "He wanted to destroy the kingdom I've been building my whole life." Film Movement has released the Us trailer for a Polish historical epic titled Sword of God, which originally premiered at a Polish film festival in 2018. It also played at Cinepocalypse, and the Fantastic Film Festival Australia last year. Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Bartosz Konopka, this genre-bending historical epic has been hailed as a "stunning showcase of experiential horror." Two men in the early Middle Ages come to a pagan land: one to bring Christianity, the other to find his way of living. They choose two different ways of reaching the pagans. In the fight between dialogue and force, one of them will die. This stars Krzysztof Pieczynski, Karol Bernacki, Wiktoria Gorodecka, Jacek Koman, Jan Bijvoet, and Jeroen Perceval. It looks crazy violent and intense as all hell, perhaps a taste of what things were really like back in the middle ages.

“Motel Acacia” takes place in America, but not any version of America that Americans will recognize. “Re-elect Roberts!” announces a garish campaign billboard bearing the face of a generic white politician. “We are great again!” Well, it’s easy to guess who that’s referring to and to extrapolate what alternate reality “Motel Acacia” has in mind. This is America as seen from abroad, America as a scary place where ugly white racists don’t just build walls to keep undocumented aliens out; they sacrifice oblivious immigrants to a menacing tree demon.
A what? Tree demons aren’t really a thing in the United States, but they’re a fertile part of Filipino folklore, and given that “Motel Acacia” is actually an Asian co-production from Philippines-based director Bradley Liew (“Singing in Graveyards”), that explains how such a monster would find its way into a movie set in the Northern U.
