“I looked forward to working with him every single night,” tweeted his Hello, Dolly! star Bette Midler. “He was fantastic. I can’t believe he’s gone. What a loss.”
Sutton Foster, who co-starred with Creel in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, wrote on Instagram, “My sweet friend. I will love you forever.”
Among the more poignant remembrances pouring onto social media comes from Casey Likes, the young star of Broadway’s Almost Famous and Back to the Future.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Likes writes, “absolutely crushed. Gavin came to almost famous and that is where we met.

the stage and screen icon won two Oscars, four Emmys, and a Tony in her legendary career.
Dame Maggie Smith has been a near-constant presence on stages and screens around the world since the 1950s. Sadly the acting icon passed away on Sept. 27, 2024 at the age of 89. Smith had an uncanny ability to thrive in both comedic and dramatic roles, in period pieces and fantasy epics. During her career, she won two Academy Awards, four Emmys, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony. In 2003 when she won her first Emmy for “My House in Umbria,” she became just the 15th person to ever secure the Triple Crown of Acting, winning an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony. To date, there have only been 24 to accomplish the feat.

FX’s Japanese historical drama eclipsed the 13 wins by “Game of Thrones” and is all but certain to take Best Drama Series and more while setting a new Emmy record at the Primetime ceremony September 15.
“Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance.

In 2018, “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul missed out on breaking the record for fastest Egot acquisition by coming up short on their first Emmy bid for “A Christmas Story Live!”. This season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” had its share of dramatic peaks, but one of the most memorable wasn’t the revelation of the killer — it was a cleverly crafted song that playfully accuses three infants of murder. With lyrics like “a diaper full of criminal intent” delivered with flair by Steve Martin, the patter song, “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” is both a humorous nod to the campy charm of musical theater and a poignant subplot for Martin’s character, the fading star Charles Haden Savage.
The question loomed: Would Savage reclaim the spotlight with lines like “Which little brat made mommy go splat?” or fade further into the eccentric world of life at the Arconia?
This tension, coupled with the show’s final performance, likely contributed to its impressive haul of 21 Emmy nominations, including nods for outstanding comedy series, outstanding original music...

Martin did it flawlessly, but the stakes aren’t over yet: The song, “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” has just been Emmy nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics — and a win finally would crown songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul with the Egot laurel.
You can watch Martin perform the song in the Season 3 episode below.
A second pair of songwriters credited on the song, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have plenty of Tonys and Grammys but not the necessary Oscar that would put them into Emmy’s Egot race.

The NBC musical drama Smash didn’t exactly live up to its title during its television run, dropping to 113rd place amongst network TV shows during its second and final season. But everyone loves a comeback story, so it should be no surprise that a stage production of Smash is on its way to Broadway. The new Smash musical will debut in spring 2025 season, but if you can’t wait until then, Peacock is tiding fans over as both seasons of the series just landed on the streamer. The stage show will be an adaptation of the Steven Spielberg-produced TV show itself, with Tony winner Susan Stroman directing and Smash’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman once again handling the music, Playbill reports. As you prepare for your rewatch, and as we wait for curtain time, let’s see which Smash songs have been hits with fans. According to...

It’s been much longer than a thousand and one nights, but “Smash,” the cult classic NBC musical drama executive produced by Steven Spielberg that aired for two seasons back in 2012, is finally on Peacock.
If you didn’t have on DVD (!), it has been a minute since the show — which starred Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee as competing actresses for the role of Marilyn Monroe on Broadway and also featured Anjelica Huston, Debra Messing, Christian Boyle, Uma Thurman, and many others — was available anywhere to stream.
That changes July 15, when all 32 episodes will finally be streamable on Peacock. Presumably, the network is making the critically maligned show available now because there is going to be a “Smash” musical debuting on Broadway in Spring 2025.
Per a press note, “Smash” won “a Critics Choice Television Award, a GLAAD Media Award, and received five Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, winning for Outstanding Choreography.

On June 30 1999, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s infamous creation, South Park, made its leap from Comedy Central to the silver screen with South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Possibly the fastest example of a TV series making the jump to film, South Park was greenlit right at the end of the first season, and production started during the second and third seasons. Bigger, Longer and Uncut would go on to fully highlight the sheer magnitude of Parker and Stone’s comedic and satirical strengths, working as a metatextual commentary on censorship and scapegoating while dealing with its own veritable censors at the MPAA.
But more notably, the South Park movie showed how much of a musical theater-loving nut Parker was by fully embedding singing-and-dancing flair in his and Stone’s first animated feature venture. (Remember that Parker’s directorial debut was the Troma-released horror comedy Cannibal! The Musical.)

Tony Talk: Our extremely early 2025 Tony Awards predictions for ‘Gypsy,’ ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and more
Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. Even though the 2024 Tony Awards are barely in the rearview mirror, we cannot help but offer our extremely early takes on the state of the 2025 race with over two dozen musicals, plays and revivals already announced.
Sam Eckmann: David, I know we just finished covering the 2024 Tony Awards… but I’m already thinking about next season! Would you care to join me on a far-too-early look at what productions might tickle Tony voters’ fancies for the 2025 ceremony? A whopping 15 new musicals debuted during the 2023-2024 Broadway season, but the 2024-2025 season is already threatening to rival those numbers. So far we have confirmed bows for “A Wonderful World,” “Death Becomes Her,” “Maybe Happy Ending,” “Redwood,” “Smash,” “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends,” “Swept Away,” and “Tammy Faye.” That’s already 8 new tuners,...

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on the verge of Egot status… that is, if Emmy voters nominate their song from “Only Murders in the Building” and it winds up winning three months from now.
Pasek and Paul — already Oscar winners for “La La Land” and Tony and Grammy winners for “Dear Evan Hansen” — could finally manage that feat with the witty comic patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” sung by Steve Martin and co-written with fellow Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the third season of the Hulu comedy-drama.
They are among the many prominent songwriters who have entered songs in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began Thursday, with approximately 550 members of the Television Academy music peer group eligible to vote in seven music categories. Voting ends June 24 and the nominations will be announced July 17.

Actors’ Equity will hand out leaflets outside a workshop of the Broadway-bound Smash musical this week, “warning of the possibility of a strike” in light of ongoing negotiations with the Broadway League regarding compensation for work on shows in development.
Equity President Kate Shindle is expected to be in attendance when the union leaflets the Smash developmental workshop Thursday morning and Friday afternoon outside the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
The union’s Development Agreement with Broadway League producers covers the development of new works, usually prior to an intended Broadway engagement. Equity and the Broadway League have been in negotiations since January 22, 2024. The current agreement expired on Sunday, February 11.

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

It was back to business as usual at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, as this year’s strike-postponed Governors Awards finally unfolded January 9. With preparations for the March 10 Oscars under way with a new set of producers (and an hour earlier start time), the Governors Awards honored Mel Brooks, Angela Bassett, editor Carol Littleton, and Sundance veteran Michelle Satter while giving Oscar contenders a chance to work a room packed with AMPAS voters.
These awards used to be presented at the Oscars ceremony, but they demanded 45 minutes of screen time. Now it makes do with a montage of the Governors Awards presentation.
The Governors Awards usually take place in November and function as a black-tie starting gun to Oscar season. It also provides the Academy with a revenue-generating event as studios buy tables and pack them with that year’s Oscar-bound talent. The delay didn’t impact that energy.

The Governors Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is always one of the annual Hollywood nights I look forward to, one that delivers Honorary Oscars in a non-televised but always warm, fun, and inspiring evening. I have attended every single one of them, and even wrote the 2nd Governors Awards, but I have to say Tuesday night’s 14th annual ceremony had an extra personal and devastatingly heartfelt kick to it, quite unforeseen when the Academy’s Board Of Governors announced their honorees – 97-year-old Mel Brooks, Film Editor Carol Littleton, Angela Bassett, and Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter – way back on June 26.
The ceremony as it usually is, was set for a mid-November date, the 18th but due to the unpredictability of the writers and actors strikes was moved to January 9. Sadly life intervened in the meantime. Littleton’s husband and former AMPAS President, cinematographer John Bailey...

Angela Bassett, collecting an honorary Oscar, gave an impassioned speech about the history of Black actresses in Hollywood and Michelle Satter, becoming the 45th recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, paid tribute to her son Michael Latt, who was murdered just weeks ago, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 14th Governors Awards on Tuesday night.
Donning tuxes and dresses, many of Hollywood’s biggest names filled the Hollywood and Highland Center, a ballroom just steps from the Dolby Theatre at which the 96th Academy Awards will take place March 10, to honor Bassett and Satter, as well as legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton, who were also presented with honorary Oscars.
The event was originally scheduled for Nov. 18 but was pushed into 2024 back because the WGA and SAG-AFTRA were still on strike. Despite not being televised, there had been concerns that it might be...

According to the current combined predictions of Gold Derby users, reigning Tony champ “Kimberly Akimbo” is the frontrunner to win this year’s Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album with 10/3 odds. So far within this century 10 shows that won Tonys for both Best Musical and Best Score also came out on top at the Grammys. Among them are “The Producers,” “Hairspray,” “Spring Awakening,” “In the Heights,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Kinky Boots,” “Hamilton,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “The Band’s Visit” and “Hadestown.” Will that trend continue this year?
SEEGrammys flashback: Revisiting The Weeknd’s notorious, confounding 2021 snub
“Kimberly Akimbo” features a score by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire. Tesori has been nominated five times before but still has yet to win. Those previous bids were for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in 2003 (lost to “Hairspray”), “Shrek the Musical” in 2010 (lost to “West Side Story”), “Fun Home” in 2016 (lost to “Hamilton”), “Soft Power” in...

For the second consecutive year, Broadway cast albums made a clean sweep of the Grammy nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, shutting out both the West End and Off Broadway.
Competing for the 2023 Grammy will be Kimberly Akimbo, Parade, Shucked, Some Like It Hot and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Three of the five nominees are new shows, while two – Parade and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – are revivals.
With today’s announcement, the Grammys reprise last summer’s Tony Awards, when all five of the productions made strong showing in both nominations and wins. At the Tonys, Kimberly Akimbo won top honors for Best Musical and Best Original Score, while Parade was named Best Musical Revival – three wins that might be most relevant as a Grammy predictor.
Still, the Tonys also awarded performances from Some Like It Hot and Shucked – Kimberly Akimbo‘s Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan took the Actress nominations in those categories – while Parade‘s Michael Arden was honored for his direction. David Lindsay-Abaire won Best Book for Kimberly Akimbo.
Like last year, all five of the nominees are Broadway cast albums, bucking a previous nomination trend that saw strong showings from both London, Off Broadway and even a concept album from a TikTok musical (the 2022 winner The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical).

Even in years when the nominations are more representative of theater both Broadway and non-Broadway, the Grammy winner almost always is a Broadway cast album, Bridgerton being the notable exception. The 2023 winner was the revival of Into The Woods, which began life Off Broadway as an Encores! presentation but took the Grammy for the recording of its subsequent Broadway staging.
Also worth noting: Of the five 2024 nominees, one has already closed (the limited engagement of Parade starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond), two will definitely be closed by the time the winners are announced on Feb. 4; and one – Sweeney Todd – will have lost its original leads (the final performances of Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford are January 14; Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster step in beginning February 9 for 12 weeks only).
The 2024 Best Musical Theater Album nominees, as listed by the Grammys, are:
Kimberly Akimbo – John Clancy, David Stone & Jeanine Tesori, producers; Jeanine Tesori, composer; David Lindsay-Abaire, lyricist (Original Broadway Cast)
Parade – Micaela Diamond, Alex Joseph Grayson, Jake Pedersen & Ben Platt, principal vocalists; Jason Robert Brown & Jeffrey Lesser, producers; Jason Robert Brown, composer & lyricist (2023 Broadway Cast)
Shucked – Brandy Clark, Jason Howland, Shane McAnally & Billy Jay Stein, producers; Brandy Clark & Shane McAnally, composers/lyricists (Original Broadway Cast)
Some Like It Hot – Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Adrianna Hicks & NaTasha Yvette Williams, principal vocalists; Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Bryan Carter, Scott M. Riesett, Charlie Rosen & Marc Shaiman, producers; Scott Wittman, lyricist; Marc Shaiman, composer & lyricist (Original Broadway Cast)
