Honestly, it's amazing that the original "Star Trek" cast managed to do six movies together. The Enterprise crew were already middle-aged when they first reassembled in 1979 for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." Then the 1982 sequel "The Wrath of Khan" made it text that Captain Kirk didn't feel as young as he used to. Yet they all kept returning for nine more years.
They didn't quite make it to "Star Trek Xii: So Very Tired," but they got halfway there. "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" was definitely not the ending of all "Trek," but it was for the original cast. It was conceived that way, hence the ending where the Enterprise is set for decommission and Jim Kirk, in his final captain's log, says it's time for the next generation to have its moment in the sun.
Since making this film capped off a journey that began in 1966, the cast did a special commemoration.

Fresh off his West End turn leading William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Tom Holland is ready to hit the ground running, debuting a brand-new non-alcoholic beer alongside his girlfriend and co-star Zendaya and providing a small update on development of the much-anticipated fourth entry in the MCU’s “Spider-Man” franchise. Speaking in a recent interview on the “Rich Roll Podcast,” Holland explained how he’s making “Spider-Man 4” a priority, especially in regards to his creative involvement.
“We have a creative and we have a pitch, and a draft which is excellent,” said Holland. “It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect,...

“I couldn’t possibly comment,” laughs Dame Pippa Harris when Deadline asks the British producer if she recognizes any colleagues among the hideous and hilarious characters in her latest series, The Franchise. Armando Iannucci’s HBO satire, going behind the scenes of a stodgy superhero franchise known as Tecto, has something for everyone who feels even slightly disenfranchised working inside the film and TV content machine.
There’s Richard E Grant’s Peter, an anti-woke thesp who is equal parts pompous and tempestuous as he embodies Tecto’s nemesis. Or what about Eric? Daniel Brühl’s deep-thinking director, who says things like, “The day hath come when the suits flutter down from the trees,” when executives visit set. Talking of whom, Pat Shannon (Darren Goldstein) is a sharply observed monster of a studio boss, who has no shame in intimidating toiling underlings at the alter of a washroom urinal.

Dame Maggie Smith was many things. Hilarious and tragic. Elegant and aloof. Enchanting and deadly serious. Most will attribute their appreciation of her multiple-generation spanning career to roles in the “Harry Potter” or “Sister Act” franchises or perhaps “Downton Abbey,” which elevated her fame to a level she often spoke disdainfully of. For Smith was not an actress who was in it for the red carpets or accolades — though she received many, including two Oscars, five Baftas, four Emmys, and a Tony — but rather treated acting as a sturdy profession, one that required of her the utmost presence while on set or stage.
Beginning her career in the early 1950s, she played Viola in William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at The Oxford Playhouse, followed later by roles in “As You Like It” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at London’s famed Old Vic theater. She rose to prominence on...

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has teamed with Tony and Olivier Award-winning directors Steven Hoggett and Christine Jones to create a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet scored by Radiohead’s 2003 album Hail to the Thief.
Titled Hamlet Hail To The Thief, the project will run at Aviva Studios in Manchester from 27 April – 18 May 2025 before transferring to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, where it will run from June 4 – 28, 2025.
Described as a “fast-paced distillation” of the play, producers have said Shakespeare’s words and Radiohead’s album “illuminate one another” as Radiohead’s music becomes a central part of the play’s narrative. The play is said to have been “personally reworked by Yorke.” The music will be performed live onstage by a cast of 20 musicians and actors.

Katy Perry‘s 143 is her attempt to reclaim her position as one of the Queens of Pop. It’s not surprising that the “Teenage Dream” singer is drawing inspiration from her back catalog. What’s shocking, however, is that she ripped off one of her lesser-known tracks. The song sounded better the first time around.
The complicated background of a Katy Perry single from ‘143’
Perry’s defining album is Teenage Dream. The album has some serious moments, but for the most part, it is pop culture candy. It even had cotton candy clouds on the cover! Tracks like “California Gurls,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” and “Firework” are perfect music for the dancefloor, the gym, or the mall.
The follow-up, Prism, was a little more grown-up. In it, Perry referenced William Shakespeare, dabbled in Eastern spirituality, and sang a power ballad about unconditional love. One of the highlights...

How do you make a King Lear? Put the queen in a bikini!
This incredibly crafted joke was not, in fact, written by William Shakespeare himself — it’s a quip that Krusty the Klown cracked in The Simpsons Season 11 episode, “Guess Who’s Coming to Criticize Dinner?” shortly before the tough crowd roundly booed The Bard.
While the brainiac, bookish, Harvard-educated nerds of The Simpsons’ writing staff have made numerous references to and jokes about the works of Shakespeare over the course of the show’s 35 seasons and counting, it’s fair to say that the citizens of Springfield aren’t the world’s biggest admirers of the most famous dramatist in history — nor are some Simpsons fans, apparently.
Right now, various Twitter fandoms are clashing over the definition of the phrase “locked in,” with stans of every singer, sports star, religious movement, actor, military power or TV show...

David Mitchell leads new BBC crime drama Ludwig, and the trailer for the show has landed. Anna Maxwell Martin co-stars.
David Mitchell has become a familiar face in UK comedy, whether trying to discern who’s telling the truth in Would I Lie To You? or as the uptight Mark Corrigan alongside long time comedy partner Robert Webb in Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s Peep Show.
He also took on the role of William Shakespeare in Ben Elton’s sitcom Upstart Crow, and reprised the role for a stage adaptation that opened in 2020 and then again when the play was restaged in 2022
Just as Alan Davies took a left turn from stand-up comedy to drama in David Renwick’s superb Jonathan Creek, Mitchell is now moving into the realm of crime drama to play the title role in six part BBC series Ludwig.

We’re guessing Judd Apatow isn’t a Dr. Pepper fan. The “Knocked Up” filmmaker is attached to direct “Cola Wars,” a film about the battle for market share between Coca Cola and Pepsi to become America’s favorite soda, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Tag-teaming with him on the project is none other than Steven Spielberg, who will produce the film through his Amblin Entertainment production banner.
The individual adds that at this point, “Cola Wars” is in very early development stages, with Apatow and Spielberg joining based on a pitch that Sony acquired back in April.
The writers for the film are Ben Queen and Jason Shuman, who co-created and writes the Apple TV+ series “Acapulco” and was also a producer on the canceled HBO series “Winning Time.”

Sir Ian McKellen says he’s been approached to play Gandalf once again in the upcoming “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” movies from Andy Serkis. But he warns that they “better be quick” if they want him to appear.
McKellen is 85 and recently suffered an accident on stage that led to him abandoning a U.K. stage tour. Meanwhile, the first of the two “Gollum” movies is set to premiere in 2026.
“I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him,” he told Big Issue in an interview out Monday. “When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So they better be quick!”

“I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him,” he told Big Issue in an interview out Monday. “When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So they better be quick!”

Stanley Kubrick's 1964 classic "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" remained depressingly relevant. We live on a planet wherein humans have invented single explosive devices powerful enough to eliminate all life on Earth, and yet they are being handled by whiny, insecure, clownish politicians and violence-obsessed military wonks with impotence and delusions of grandeur. It's telling that one of the biggest hits of 2023, Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," was also about how petty egos tend to take precedence over the profound immoral invention of the nuclear bomb.
1964 was a time when phrases like "balance of power" were bandied about in the news, all while politicians and pundits argued about the moral righteousness of every major global superpower possessing the ability to destroy the world with equal skill. If everyone on Earth can blow up the planet, surely, then, everything is in perfect balance.

A cromulent command of Simpsons phrases embiggens the smallest lexicon.
Modern linguistic scholars believe that as many as 1,700 English words marked their first recorded use in the works of William Shakespeare. By that count, no single human being has contributed more to the pages of the English dictionary than The Bard, but we should still give some special consideration to The Bald. Homer Simpson, his family and his neighbors have given a great deal to the vocabulary and vernacular of the common, modern English-speaker whether they know it or not, even though the average reading level in Springfield probably isn’t much higher than what’s required to read the back of a box of Krusty-o’s.

Ian McKellen recently told Saga Magazine (via The Standard) that he experienced “agonizing” pain in the aftermath of his fall in June during a performance of “Player Kings” at the Noel Coward Theatre in London. The actor was playing John Falstaff when he fell offstage during a battle scene. McKellen tripped on a newspaper and fell into the front row of the audience, chipping his vertebrae and fracturing his wrist during the incident. These injuries “are not yet healed.”
“I avoid going out because I’m nervous someone might bump into me, and I’ve been dealing with agonizing pain in my shoulders due to the jolt my body took,” McKellen said. “But the fat suit I wore for Falstaff saved my ribs and other joints, so I consider myself lucky.”
“I’ve relived that fall countless times. It was horrible,” he continued. “I thought it was the end of something.

Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao will next tackle an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel “Hamnet” for Focus Features, and the project has a robust team in place. Oscar nominees Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal will star in the adaptation alongside Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn, while Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes will produce alongside Liza Marshall and Pippa Harris.
The book is a fictional take on the grief over the death of William Shakespeare’s son Hamnet at the age of 11. Zhao co-wrote the screenplay with O’Farrell.
This marks Zhao’s next film after her one-two punch of 2020’s “Nomadland,” for which she won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, and 2021’s Marvel movie “Eternals.”
Mescal has “Gladiator II” coming this fall for director Ridley Scott while Buckley, who received an Oscar nomination for her turn in 2021’s “The Lost Daughter,” next stars in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “Frankenstein” twist “The Bride.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" climaxes with the Marvelous heroes fighting the titular tin man and his army of duplicates in fictional European nation Sokovia. Ultron has built a giant engine beneath a Sokovian city to lift it off the ground, intending to slam it back onto the Earth and cause a mass extinction event. "When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world will be metal."
This scheme is not inspired by a Marvel comic, but rather another film about a robot army and floating city: Hayao Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky," the first film made by Studio Ghibli. (Though "Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind" brought Ghibli's soon-to-be founders together.) "Castle In The Sky," set in a Wales-like fantasy world, follows orphans Pazu and Sheeta as they search for Laputa, a long-lost advanced civilization.
Laputa is like Atlantis if it soared above the clouds instead of collapsing beneath the waves.

Has one word ever decided an election?
It’s possible we’re about to find out. The word in question is “weird” — a term even a 5-year-old could understand, and one that’s proving extraordinarily effective in Kamala Harris’ bid to defeat Donald Trump in November.
It’s a word that since 1980 has skyrocketed in popularity, according to a graph on Google’s Ngram Viewer, which only accounts for usage until 2022. That line is going to jump even higher once it reaches 2024.
It all began with a casual insult tossed out by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and has since caught on like a viral wildfire. The “weird” label has proven so sticky and effective, it may have even played a significant role in Harris’ decision to choose Walz as her running mate. At their first joint appearance at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday, there it was again: “These guys are creepy and yes,...

Hamnet, director Chloe Zhao’s retelling of the death of Shakespeare’s son stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, and cameras finally ready to roll.

Now we’re almost in August but it looks like production on Hamnet is finally underway, with Wales chosen as the location for the shoot.

From the vast world of television shows, we, as in those of us who get way too invested in stories about the people we see on our screens, have watched and re-watched and binged on numerous shows over the years. In trying to escape our realities and to get ourselves involved in the fantasy of these shows and the characters, television has always been a medium people are drawn to.

This article contains spoilers for "Twisters."
As the title suggests, the main attraction in "Twisters" are the multiple tornadoes, forces of nature that range from EF1s to terrifyingly disastrous EF5s. Given that the film's story involves several groups of storm chasers tooling around Oklahoma, attempting to devise a way of mitigating a tornado once it's formed, it would seem likely that director Lee Isaac Chung's biggest influences on the film would include other natural disaster movies, adventure films, and so on.
Yet, just like the original "Twister," "Twisters" has more going on beneath the surface. Just as storm chasers Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Tyler (Glen Powell), and Javi (Anthony Ramos) are struggling with various ethical issues surrounding the study of tornadoes and how to best help with the after effects of their arrival, they're also caught in a love triangle, with Kate fielding longtime colleague and friend Javi's...

The Sandman is Morpheus, also known as Dream of the Endless. And the Endless never end, right? I mean, it’s right there in the name.
Yet, with the show’s latest casting announcement, it’s clear that producers of the Netflix series The Sandman have the end in mind. The latest characters to appear in the series include some major players in Neil Gaiman‘s climactic tale World’s End, including Morpheus’s son Orpheus, Puck from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Norse gods Loki, Thor, and Odin.
Orpheus will be played by Ruairi O’Connor, best known for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Morning Show. Comic book readers know Orpheus as the son of Morpheus and Calliope, the muse kidnapped by insecure writers in the episode bearing her name. Newcomers to the Sandman story were struck at how cruelly Morpheus treated Calliope, and...

Orson Welles first rose to fame with revisionist takes on William Shakespeare’s work, among them a 1937 theatrical production of Julius Caesar set in a fascist state and, a year earlier, Voodoo Macbeth, which relocated the plot of Macbeth to Haiti and featured an entirely black cast. His 1948 film adaptation of the play is similarly faithful in its use of the original text, with the actors going as far as to adopt thick highland brogues. The film likewise transposes Welles’s theatrical experimentations into cinematic terms, existing largely as a showcase for the auteur’s arcane, fussy expressionism, as well as the many cultural quirks borne of a peripatetic life. For example, in the opening scene in which Macbeth (Welles) meets the three witches, they make a facsimile of the lord out of clay, a voodoo-like touch that could be a subtle nod to Welles’s vaunted all-black stage production.

To be or not to be? That is the question that frustrates Jeopardy! fans who think the show puts too much emphasis on William Shakespeare categories. Jeopardy! has its various staple categories, including the Bible, European rivers, opera, and, perhaps most commonly, Shakespeare, the world-renowned English playwright and poet. In fact, Shakespeare comes up so much that budding contestants specifically train for questions on the immortal bard. The website Brainscape, which helps potential players study, has an entire page dedicated to Jeopardy! Shakespeare Flashcards — it also has flashcards on the Bible, Opera and Classical, and U.S. Presidents. Meanwhile, the Jeopardy! Reddit forum has seen several threads from applicants seeking advice on Shakespeare, knowing that the Romeo & Juliet writer has a high probability of appearing on the show. “I’m so excited to be taping at the end of next month, but I am So Nervous. I know next...

Channing Tatum may have seemed like a borderline soccer pro in She’s the Man, but the actor admitted his skills weren’t as impressive in the sport as they seemed onscreen.
Tatum appeared on Entertainment Tonight‘s newest edition of “Spilling the E-Tea” alongside his Fly Me to the Moon co-star Scarlett Johansson. During the segment, the Avengers actor asked the Magic Mike star if he ever faked a skill to get a job, and he noted he did for “a movie about soccer.”
“It definitely wasn’t about soccer, but I played soccer in [She’s the Man], and I definitely led on a little bit more that I could play soccer [better] than I actually could. But I pulled it off,” he said. “I was like, ‘Just cut away when I fuck up.'”
