This may be an unpopular opinion, but Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is one of the less interesting characters to emerge from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On paper, he's interesting -- in that he is a superpowered Norse deity, yet he is beholden to the rules of honor and propriety practiced by the Asgardian aristocracy. He was built for battle, but he also must possess honor in order to wield his best-known weapon: a massive, lightning-powered hammer. The problem with Thor is that his powers, and indeed his character, are ill-defined. Although he is a literal Norse deity, several MCU films redefine him as a space alien (!) who merely imitates a god. He must "be worthy" to use his hammer, but it's never been defined what worthiness entails.
Also, for a god, his powers seem incredibly limited. One would think that if...

This essay by Betty Gabriel on her scariest movie of all-time is one of several contributed as part of Variety’s 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time package.
What “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein” lacks in jump scares and other familiar horror tropes, it makes up for in its homage to the source material. The author’s name is in the title, and considering how influential this novel has been — and how, in the original film, she’s credited as Mrs. Percy Shelley — it is a significant gesture.
Kenneth Branagh, the Shakespearean wiz of my dreams, brings that passionate theatricality to this piece, and steers the ship with dramatic heft and kinetic electricity. The rest of the cast, most of whom have Oscar nominations by the way, is dynamic, particularly Helena Bonham Carter and especially towards the end.
It’s primarily a drama with loads of romance, but not without a...

Director Barry Sonnenfeld has been chatting about 1999’s Wild Wild West, and how the hugely expensive movie failed to click.
Barry Sonnenfeld has just released a new memoir, titled Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time, and the filmmaker has been promoting it by dropping a few brilliant stories here and there.
While one tale about the noxious toxicity of Will Smith’s farts on the set of Men In Black has already picked up plenty of traction online, it’s his take on the conflict at the heart of 1999’s Wild Wild West that is particularly interesting.
Despire earning $220m at the global box office, Wild Wild West has always been viewed as something of a miss for all involved.
In his memoir (via SlashFilm), Sonnenfeld gives his take on the action comedy that featured Will Smith and Kevin Kline as the two leads, with Kenneth Branagh in the villain role.

Gene Wilder’s giddy brilliance is backed by a tremendous supporting cast and only a few gags lumber as the film is re-released for its 50th anniversary
Mel Brooks’s outrageously broad and deliriously silly black-and-white comedy, co-written with its neurotically bequiffed star Gene Wilder, is re-released for its 50th anniversary. Their lovingly observed 1974 movie is closer in time to the 1931 James Whale/Boris Karloff classic – whose lab equipment props Brooks actually re-used – than we are now to this film. In some ways it can now be considered not as satire or spoof, but a continuation of the Frankenstein genre, a connoisseur development or theme-variation not so far removed from the Hammer or Warhol riffs, and a whole lot more successful and intuitive than Kenneth Branagh’s deadly serious, deadly dull treatment from 1994 with Robert De Niro as the creature. Interestingly, though Wilder said that Young Frankenstein is based on...

Will Smith became an A-lister in the ‘90s when he continuously gave hits such as Bad Boys, Independence Day, and Men in Black. The latter was a huge commercial success, and Smith was established as a bankable Hollywood superstar, despite all three films having a co-lead actor.
Smith then made the Wester-sci-fi comedy Wild Wild West with his Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld. Though it has a cult following now, the film was a box-office disaster upon release. It was one of the most expensive films ever made. Sonnenfeld reflected in his book why it did not work, and the reason was reportedly Kevin Kline.

The 4:30 Movie writer-director Kevin Smith is well aware that filmmakers are in a self-reflective phase, especially after the wake-up call that was the recent global pandemic. In the past few years alone, Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and James Gray (Armageddon Time) have made period dramas based on their childhoods, but most notably, Steven Spielberg put out The Fabelmans in 2022, detailing how his parents’ divorce intersected with his budding filmmaking prowess. Smith’s 16th feature about his four first loves — his neighborhood movie theater, his adolescent crush and his two best friends — is already being compared to Spielberg’s most recent Oscar-nominated film.
“A lot of nice people online have been saying that [The 4:30 Movie] is kind of like The Fabelmans, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s sweet.’ And then The New York Times was like, ‘Yeah, it’s kind of like The Fabelmans if the kid grows up to make terrible movies,...

Uzumaki is turning heads with its bone-chilling animation. The anime excels in capturing Junji Ito’s art style, especially when it comes to its greyscale tones. By doing so, the series stays true to the core text. Moreover, it encapsulates the elements of body horror perfectly. Conversely, the process behind bringing the series to life was nothing short of eerie.

Besides taking eons to come to fruition, the series is ridden with superstitions. Especially when it comes to the ever-looming imagery of spirals. The after-effects of production were potent and lethal. Eventually, the producer had to take his team to rid themselves of supernatural entities. He revealed the whole incident in an interview.

Barry Sonnenfeld had one heck of a career as a director in Hollywood. In the '90s, he was hard to touch, from his work on "The Addams Family" movies to "Men in Black," it was hit after hit. Unfortunately, even the best careers hit speed bumps from time to time. Sonnenfeld hit a massive one in 1999 when he directed the infamous, expensive flop that was "Wild Wild West." While the director must always shoulder responsibility, there were many factors at play here. Perhaps none bigger in spelling the film's doom than producer Jon Peters.
/Film's Ethan Anderton recently spoke with Sonnenfeld in anticipation of his upcoming memoir "Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time: True Stories from a Career in Hollywood," which is available for pre-order now on Amazon. During the conversation, Sonnenfeld discussed the mess that was "Wild Wild West.

It's hard to overstate just how popular Will Smith was in 1999. He's still one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but in 1999, he was everywhere. Fresh off his hit sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and the wildly successful film "Men in Black," Smith was one of the hottest stars around. Oh, and his debut solo album, "Big Willie Style," was a multiplatinum hit. So imagine everyone's excitement when he reteamed with "Men in Black" director Barry Sonnenfeld for a movie reboot of the 1960's TV western "The Wild Wild West," co-starring Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, and Salma Hayek.
The hype was real, but unfortunately, "Wild Wild West" was a critical and box office disaster. It was a major hiccup in Smith's career, and he later admitted that he believes it's the worst movie in his entire filmography.

An adaptation of the classic Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein has long been a dream project for director Guillermo del Toro, the filmmaker with such credits as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Blade II. He’s been talking about it for at least 17 years – and now he’s actually making it! After previous attempts to get the project going fell through, Netflix stepped up to let del Toro make the Frankenstein movie he’s been dreaming of. They haven’t announced a release date for the film yet, but while we wait for that news to come along, here’s Everything We Know About Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein:
Long Road To Production
Del Toro has named Frankenstein as his favorite novel, and in 2007, he told us that the project he “would kill to make” is a faithful “Miltonian tragedy” version of Frankenstein. He said that he...

Charlton Heston became a household name with leading roles in action adventures and biblical epics, but his credits extended past those two well-worn genres. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After serving in the United States Army Air Force during WWII, Heston made his professional movie acting debut with the film noir “Dark City” (1950). His big breakthrough came just two years later with Cecil B. DeMille‘s big top soap opera “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1952), in which he played the circus manager. Though an audience favorite in its time, the film often ranks among the all-time worst Oscar winners for Best Picture.
Heston later reunited with DeMille to play the Old Testament prophet Moses in “The Ten Commandments” (1956), which brought him a Golden Globe nomination. A holy hit at the box office, the role undoubtedly inspired William Wyler to cast...

American Zoetrope's filmography is kind of mind-boggling. Co-founded by "Movie Brats" Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in 1969, the distributor and production company has stayed pretty true to its mission statement of backing not just projects by Coppola and his family, but also experimental and international cinema. The list of directors that've had American Zoetrope in their corner at some point or another is just as extraordinary. There's Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, Godfrey Reggio, Carroll Ballard, and, of course, Tim Burton. Wait, what?
It's true: At the peak of his powers in the 1990s, the ringmaster of the "macabre funhouse" (as /Film's Bj Colangelo has aptly put it) teamed up with Coppola's American Zoetrope for 1999's "Sleepy Hollow."
When you think about it, it's not so surprising that Coppola got in on Burton's creep-tastical revamp of Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

John Cena has zoomed into his latest action franchise and is slated to star in Apple Original Film “Matchbox,” the latest feature adaptation of an iconic Mattel toy brand.
Sam Hargrave is set to direct the live-action feature film with Skydance co-producing alongside Mattel.
David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Read the studio’s official synopsis, below:
“Matchbox” will be inspired by Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line of the same name. The legendary Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. When his daughter’s school friends too began clamouring for a “matchbox car,” an iconic brand was born. The high standards of authenticity for Matchbox die-cast cars have driven the brand for over 70 years and generations of fans.

Brad Pitt was instrumental in Helena Bonham Carter being cast in Fight Club. And although the film was a success, at first it didn’t seem history would be too kind to the David Fincher picture.

Fight Club became one of Carter’s most memorable films. It was a movie she credited both Pitt and her Oscar nomination for getting. She was nominated for her role in the 1997 feature The Wings of the Dove. And although she didn’t win, the nomination and her performance were enough to get Carter a lot of movie offers. Carter realized she had to snatch a film up quickly before the Oscar ceremony in case she lost.
“It was Brad’s idea for me to be in it,” Carter once told The Guardian.

Oscar Isaac’s upcoming animated film will explore the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. However, the plot of The King of Kings isn’t that simple. Fans found it shocking that the film has a multi-dimensional theme, where author Charles Dickens and his son Walter travel back to different points in Christ’s life. The King of Kings is set to rise next Easter.
Blue Harbor Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the faith-based animated movie and intends to release it in theaters over Easter holiday. It did not reveal an exact date, though the holiday falls on the April 18-20 weekend next year.
The film is loosely based on “The Life of Our Lord,” a posthumously published Charles Dickens short story that focuses on the life and times of Jesus Christ. Kenneth Branagh voice stars as Dickens, while Oscar Isaac voices Jesus. Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan and Roman Griffin Davis also voice star.
It centers on a multidimensional adventure Dickens goes on with his son, Walter. Along the way, “the master storyteller engages his youngest son’s vivid imagination with the fascinating life of Jesus, his well-known trials and tribulations, and his notable colleagues and foes,...

Johnny Depp once collaborated alongside Helena Bonham Carter in the Tim Burton feature Sweeney Todd. But one sequence required Carter to get a bit too close with her co-star. And it seemed to bother Carter more than it bothered Burton.

Carter played Depp’s accomplice in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Although Carter and Burton were married at the time, Burton was skeptical about casting his significant other in the film. Sweeney Todd was a dark musical, and Burton wasn’t convinced Carter had the voice to pull off her character’s melodies. Still, she gave his wife an opportunity like he would any other actor, refusing special treatment.

With a career spanning decades, Cummings even came across an opportunity to star in the billion-dollar Harry Potter franchise as Gilderoy Lockhart. While X-Men '97 was a hot favourite to win the Emmy for "Outstanding Animated Program" yesterday evening, the Marvel Animation series was beaten by Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai.
That relatively obscure adult animation series also soundly defeated The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, and Scavengers Reign.
While some of Blue Eye Samurai's fanbase might take issue with it being described as "obscure," it certainly didn't receive the same level of mainstream attention as Marvel Studios' X-Men: The Animated Series revival. Still, that never matters when it comes to awards and the show was clearly deemed superior.
Heading into the first night of the 76th Emmys, it had already picked up wins for "Character Design," "Storyboard," and "Production Design," so this probably shouldn't come as a huge surprise.

Patricia Arquette is set to star in a new as yet untitled Hulu limited series about the Murdaugh Murders from co-creator and showrunner Michael D. Fuller and co-creator Erin Lee Carr.
The series tells the story of Maggie and Alex Murdaugh’s “stranger-than-fiction family drama, a riveting account drawing from countless hours of reporting by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular Murdaugh Murders Podcast – as well as exclusive, insider knowledge from years spent following the case,” details a release from the streamer.
Arquette will star as Maggie Murdaugh, a wife and mother whose husband Alex Murdaugh was convicted of her murder and that of their son Paul. The patriarch is currently serving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. His attempt to get a new trial was denied in January.
Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund for Eat the Cat will executive produce alongside with Mandy Matney. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
The project reunites Arquette with Eat the Cat, Hulu and UCP following their collaboration on the limited series The Act. Arquette received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work on the project.
Arquette’s upcoming projects include The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde, opposite Jodie Comer and directed by Kenneth Branagh, and They Will Kill You, opposite Zazie Beetz. Her recent TV credits include Severance, High Desert and Escape at Dannemora, for which she won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG Awards.
She is repped by Gersh, 3 Arts Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
Michael D. Fuller is repped by UTA, Grandview and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Mandy Matney is repped by UTA.
Erin Lee Carr is repped by UTA and Sloss Eckhouse Dasti Haynes. She has a first-look deal with UCP. Nick Antosca is repped by WME and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis. He has an overall deal with UCP.

Helena Bonham Carter is a name synonymous with eccentricity, bold outfits, and a penchant for quirky roles. But her personal life, too, has been no less dramatic, filled with its own twists and turns. One particularly colorful chapter began in 1994 when she became romantically involved with Kenneth Branagh on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

But wait…this was a classic love triangle. Well, Branagh was still married to Emma Thompson at the time. The affair concluded not only in significant emotional upheaval for the Harry Potter actress but ultimately led to the end of her marriage in 1995.
Thompson, however, being the high road-taker extraordinaire, later stated in a 2013 interview that she’s no longer interested in revisiting old conflicts as she made peace with Bonham Carter long ago.

Junji Ito has become a household name when people talk about horror manga. He began his career with his first publication, Tomie, on the then-respected Shojo Horror Magazine Monthly Halloween in 1987.
35 years later, Ito-sensei has now attained the status of a legendary mangaka, with works like Uzumaki, Frankenstein, and his numerous anthologies of short stories under his belt.

I'm willing to go on the record and admit that I went into "Deadpool & Wolverine" highly skeptical about the whole enterprise. The typical Deadpool-style of humor felt completely played out, sure, but it was only natural that Marvel would triple down on the obnoxious comic book character. But to drag along a beloved figure like Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and, in the process, completely undo his poignant ending in director James Mangold's "Logan"? That's another matter entirely. In all honesty, I'm still convinced there will never be a better sendoff for the most popular X-Men than that 2017 film, but at least Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds had the presence of mind to directly address this adamantium-laced elephant in the room right away.
Not a single fan could've expected "Deadpool & Wolverine" to open by literally digging up Logan's grave and exhuming his skeleton to use as weapons in a knock-down,...

Ridley Scott will direct You Should Be Dancing, the biopic of the Bee Gees. But there’s Gladiator II to sort out first.

Ridley Scott has now apparently locked his final cut of his new movie, and the project he’s jumping onto straight afterwards is You Should Be Dancing. This is, as you’ve probably gleaned from the cunning headline, the planned biopic of the Bee Gees, which Scott had taken on after it went through the hands of the likes of John Carney and Kenneth Branagh.
The film is set to start shooting early in 2025, but the unknown here is whether Gladiator II will be at the level to warrant an Oscar run. The original film won the Best Picture Academy Award of course,...

It’s a packed fall for NYC theater fans, with highly anticipated musical adaptations of beloved movies “Death Becomes Her” and “Teeth,” among others, set to premiere.

When looking at the reception they’ve received for “Blue Eye Samurai,” show creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi see one recurring bit of flattery that really delights them. “One of the best compliments we’ve gotten is people keep asking us, where did you get the rights to the books and we have to remind them there were no books. We just thought of it. It was an idea Amber and I had been thinking of for a really long time,” Green reveals to Gold Derby during our recent web chat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The idea actually stemmed from when the couple had their daughter who they nicknamed Blue Eye Samurai after the features she had due to her being of mixed race. “We sat on the idea a long time, not sure quite what to do with it until, finally, the idea of doing it...

In Kenneth Branagh's 2011 fantasy clunker "Thor," it was explained that the title demigod (Chris Hemsworth) could only lift his magical hammer weapon -- called Mjölnir -- if he was "worthy." It's never quite explained what qualities one must possess in order to be worthy, but it has something to do with honorable behavior, a willingness to make sacrifices, and generally being a decent person. Only once one has proven themselves will they be permitted to pick up the weapon and smash people's heads into a bloody pulp.
In Joss Whedon's 2015 superhero mashup "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Thor dared his superhero co-workers to try lifting the hammer, but because they weren't worthy, it remained infinitely heavy. Later in the film, the android Vision (Paul Bettany) lifted the hammer, no problem, possibly because he's an artificial being. Then, in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," Captain America (Chris Evans) was able to fling...

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published September 2023, and has since been updated.]
There was a time not too long ago when whodunnits seemed to be a dusty relic of cinema’s past. Mysteries about a cast of colorful characters at the center of a murder case, and the intrepid detective investigating them, were far and few between in movie theaters for what felt like decades, and the rare films to feature those plots seldom attracted much attention. But nowadays, the genre is back, baby.
In 2017, Kenneth Branagh directed and starred as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot in “Murder on the Orient Express,” based on one of mystery writer Agatha Christie’s most famous novels. It was the first high-profile Christie adaptation to hit theaters in ages, after 1988’s “Appointment with Death.” The movie was highly successful, and Branagh has returned to that Poirot mustache with “Death on the Nile” and “A Haunting in Venice,” the latter of which opened in theaters this month.
