ESPN baseball writer Howard Bryant was arrested Saturday for assaulting his estranged wife in front of their 6-year-old son, police tell The Republican.

ESPN and Bryant have refused comment on the altercation, which reportedly took place outside a pizza restaurant in Massachusetts.

His lawyer, Buz Eisenberg, tells the Boston Herald it has to do with race.

“If Howard Bryant was Caucasian and was on the streets having exactly the same conversation with his wife — nobody would have even noticed,” he said.

“Race still plays a part in our society and we intend to contest these allegations completely,” Eisenberg added. “The 6-year-old had to witness his father being thrown on a hood of a car and being abused.”

Bryant was charged with domestic assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, according to the Republican. He paid $50,000 bail and was released.

State police spokesman David Procopio told the Boston Herald Monday that the attorney’s race claims were “wrong” and insulting to domestic violence victims.

“Howard Bryant was arrested, first and foremost, because evidence indicates he physically assaulted a woman,” Procopio said. “He had additional charges filed against him because he was combative with arresting officers.”

He pleaded not guilty in Greenfield Distract Court Monday. His wife was by his side, his attorney says.

This isn’t the first trouble for ESPN.

Anchors recently came under fire for their endorsement deals with Reebok and Nike. Announcer Ron Franklin was fired in January after making sexiest remarks to reported Jeannine Edwards (he sued the network two weeks later).
