A court has issued a
gag order on Stavros Stavrou, the former head of the government doctors union, preventing him from publishing any disparaging comments about the University of Cyprus (UCy) medical school.
'Given the pending cases in the courts, this press statement of the PCC is in violation of the
gag order issued by the Court of Appeals.
The defendants' first court session was on 30 April, when the court banned press coverage by issuing the
gag order.
The
gag order virtually means that only the panel of spokespersons is now entitled to speak to the news media, while other office bearers have to restrict themselves to, at best, speaking about the work assigned to them.
Portland lawyer Erin Olson, who represents several of the victims, attempted unsuccessfully to have the
gag order lifted.
The STAR reported that the high court, in an en banc session, issued a
gag order for the two parties in the case.
'Nevertheless, the parties are hereby reminded of the
Gag Order dated April 19, 2016, principally directing them to refrain from discussing the merit of these cases and to issue any press releases regarding the same,' it added.
Despite denying Vitangcol's manifestation with motion, the Sandiganbayan reminded both the prosecution and defense of its
gag order "for strict compliance."

gag order banning publishing of news about the case of a tobacco factory that illegally manufactures and smuggles cigarettes "to protect the secrecy of ongoing investigations." The Attorney General told Petra that investigations found that no incumbent or former officials, public figures or businesspeople in Jordan are involved in the circumstances of the case.
