There are also different types of lupus - from the milder
discoid lupus erythematosus, or DLE - to the more serious systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE.
Some lupus conditions, such as widespread cutaneous lupus and
discoid lupus erythematosus, affect the skin but not internal organs.
Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may or may not coexist, with DLE occurring in 20% of SLE patients [1] and 17% progressing to SLE [2].
As a cutaneous variant of lupus erythematosus,
discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is thought to have a good prognosis; however, the involvement of internal organs with a transition to systemic disease may occur.
Lupus erythematosus can be subdivided into 3 major clinical variants: chronic
