The sua in the
tautoga as practised and demonstrated nowadays is only a mild indication of what our forefathers developed as traditional chants, composed out of the forceful emotions and power of expressive war music.

The tautog (
Tautoga onitis) is a species of fish from the family Labridae that ranges from Nova Scotia (Scott and Scott, 1988) to South Carolina (Grimes et al., 1982).
maenas; starfish (Rivara (3)); northern puffers, Sphoeroides maculates (Rivara (3)); tautog,
Tautoga onitis; eider ducks, Somateria mollissima (Whittaker (4)); and scup, Stenotomus chrysops (Whittaker (4)) and, along shallow shores, gulls (Family Laridae) (Fig.
Previous work has demonstrated that abundances of fishes and decapod crustaceans are depressed under large municipal piers (Able et al., 1998), and that growth rates of young-of-the-year (YOY) winter flounder (Pseudo-pleuronectes americanus) and tautog (
Tautoga onitis) are negative (i.e., the fish lose weight) when caged under piers for extended periods (Duffy-Anderson and Able, 1999; Able et al., 1999).
These were the two gadids (Atlantic cod and haddock), the toadfish (Opsanus tau, family Batrachoididae), and the tautog (
Tautoga onitis, family Labridae).
Two species common on the middle shelf sites, the scup (Stenotomus chrysops) and the tautog (
Tautoga onitis), were not observed on the deeper sites.
Early life history of the tautog
Tautoga onitis in the mid-Atlantic bight.
The expansion of this habitat type in the Bight by man's addition of solid material has probably had an effect on LMR distributions and fisheries (such as American lobster, Homarus americanus; cod, Gadus morhua; red hake, Urophycis chuss; ocean pout, Macrozoarces americanus; scup, Stenotomus chrysops; black sea bass, Centropristis striata; and tautog,
Tautoga onitis) and possible effect on other resources, but these effects are not well known nor well understood.
Similarly, we examined [Q.sub.10] values for larvae of Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, (2.4 at temperatures 19-24[degrees]C), Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus, (3.0 at temperatures 13-18[degrees]C), and tautog,
Tautoga onitis (1.9 at temperatures 16 - 22[degrees]C) (Rombough, 1988), and concluded that while our estimate for weakfish larvae was derived for studies conducted with juveniles, it fell within the expected range of [Q.sub.10] values for estuarine larvae and therefore provided a reasonable estimate of variations in growth rate with changes in temperature.

Concentrations of Rb, Mg, Ca, Mn, Sr, Na, K, Sr, Pb, and Ba were determined by using solution-based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in otoliths of young-of-the year tautog (
Tautoga onitis) captured in nursery areas along the Rhode Island coast during two consecutive years.
Several fish species were sampled throughout each season in the SAG, which included the seaboard goby (Gobiosoma ginsburgi), grubby (Myoxocephalus aenaeus), tautog (
Tautoga onitis), and cunner (Tautogalabrus adspersus).
Estuarine and habitat-related differences in growth rates of young-of-the-year winter flounder (Peudopleuronectes americanus) and tautog (
Tautoga onitis) in three northeastern US estuaries.
Increased activity in reaction to chilling was also seen in tautog (
Tautoga onitis) and sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) (Olla et al., 1980; Sogard and Olla, 1998).
