Christina Aguilera leads a charge of debuts in the top five slots of The Billboard 200 with the double-disc RCA set “Back to Basics.” The set sold 346,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving Aguilera her first No. 1 album since her 1999 self-titled debut.
The first-week sales for “Back to Basics” are the most for a solo female artist since Mary J. Blige moved 727,000 in December with “The Breakthrough.” Aguilera’s current single, “Ain’t No Other Man,” has peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100 thus far.
Lyfe Jennings opens at No. 2 with his sophomore Columbia effort “The Phoenix,” which sold 136,000 copies. The set also bows at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Trace Adkins’ “Dangerous Man” lands at No. 3 with 115,000, his best position on the Billboard 200 and most robust debut sales week to date. The set also provides the artist his third No. 1 on the Hot Country Albums chart.
Sister act Cherish opens at No. 4 with the Sho’Nuff set “Underappreciated,” which sold 91,000 copies. The group’s snappy single, “Do It To It,” has peaked at No. 14 on the Hot 100. Following in the footsteps of Disney’s mega-selling “High School Musical,” the company’s “The Cheetah Girls 2” soundtrack bows at No. 5 with 87,000 copies.
The BMG/Zomba/EMI/UME compilation “NOW 22” falls 3-6 in its sixth week on the chart, moving 83,000 (a 20% sales decline). After debuting on top last week, Rick Ross’ “Port of Miami” (Slip-N-Slide/Def Jam) slides to No. 7 with 79,000, a 58% sales decline.
Rapper Obie Trice’s “Second Round’s on Me” (Shady) debuts at No. 8 with 74,000, while the Jive/Zomba soundtrack to “Step Up” falls 6-9 with 64,000 copies, a sales increase of 9%. Nickelback’s Roadrunner album “All the Right Reasons” sits tight at No. 10 for a third week with 54,000 (+13%).
Other big debuts this week include “Snakes on a Plane: The Album” at No. 43 (19,000), released in conjunction with last weekend’s top film at the U.S. box office. Jamaican superstar Cham’s Atlantic debut, “Ghetto Story” enters at No. 53 with 15,000.
At 9.57 million units, overall CD sales are up 2% from last week’s count and down 7% compared to the same week a year ago. Sales for 2006 are down 7% compared to 2005 at 335.02 million units.
