I wish I had seen this movie a long time ago. This is a great movie by James Mangold that I will definitely keep in my DVD collection. Heavy is a very slow, but good drama. Victor (Pruitt Taylor Vince) is a very overweight middle aged man who also has a lot of mental health issues and is also extremely lonely. He is a cook at a roadside restaurant that him and his mom run. One day a very gorgeous girl named Callie (Liv Tyler) comes in for a job and Victor immediately falls in love with her. (Who wouldn't?!) Victor wants to be a really good cook/chef, but knows he can't afford to go and pursue it, so, he goes back to his old daily routine he has done his whole life. Victor is a super sweet guy even with all his problems. One day tragedy strikes, but he doesn't tell anybody what happened. He is extremely crushed, but the only person he will tell is Callie. Callie is also extremely crushed by what has happened and decides that she wants to quit the diner and go back to school. Victor and Callie decide to leave things on good terms as Callie leaves. Victor has a hard time coming to grasp with everything that's happened, but one day he accepts everything and moves on like we all do. I would recommend this movie to anybody who loves a good drama. The acting is absolutely superb by everybody and this movie deserves nothing less than 5 stars!

Something new under the sun: there's no formula to this picture. Each action and emotion logically follows the one before, instead of being contrived to fit into some form. This isn't hero-wants-girl, hero-loses-weight, hero-gets-girl, or the opposite, where the hero displays the fatal flaw which will hold him back all his life.
If you are used to the Hollywood formula, you won't know what's going to happen next, though by intuition, you will figure it out eventually, because these are real people; you know people like these-- unless you've lived in Levittown all your life, in which case you should see this film because you need the education.
Brilliant performances all around. I bought this video because I'm a Deborah Harry fan, and here she proves her natural acting skills once again. She is so good, it's difficult to remember that in her career, she has not been primarily an actress. Shelley Winters is great. Everyone is wonderful. The lead actor has very few lines, because he is a loner, but he is so good, he communicates without having to speak.
The film is slow-paced, but not plodding. I didn't notice time pass as I watched it. The beat is steady, and I was caught up in its rhythm. I couldn't stop watching, not to eat or let the dog out. This is a beautiful film.

This is a great movie about a "heavy" guy named Victor, and the pain and agony he goes thru just in day to day living. Whether it's a weight problem, a balding problem, whatever makes you feel insecure about yourself, I think almost everyone can relate to his pain of being stuck inside himself. He wants to reach out desperately but the fear of rejection holds him back. The actor conveys so much emotion without words, you can almost feel it thru the screen.
Victor enjoys some companionship for a short while with a guy he meets in the hospital cafeteria. The guy kinda tells him (my paraphrase :-) ), "I have baggage too, we all have baggage. We're all a lot a like."
This is a down-to-earth kind of movie with people we can relate to. Like someone else said, this is not the 'Typical Hollywood formula movie." Amen.

I loved this movie so much. Debbie Harry had been long forgotten (despite her resurgence) when this movie came out, it was a shock to recognize her and a thrill to see her throw herself into this dumpy role as though she lived it, hell all the actors (minus Evan Dando, who is generally terrible) give phenomenal performances. A beautifully slow movie. An underground classic.

I like Liv Tyler but to me, the movie was slow. I don't think the movie revolved around one being over-weight. I think it had many insecure characters in it.

This movie was a huge disappointment. It just knind of drags on and on. The main character, Victor, is overweight and obsessed with Debbie, the Liv Tyler character. At first a felt sorry for Victor, but because he hardly speaks, ignores questions, or mumbles monosyllabic responses, he soon got on my nerves. Okay, he's a very shy man, worried about being too fat, he's all ga ga over Debbie (Liv Tyler), and his eyes mist up on demand, but his character is hardly given any dialog, which makes the film drag on and on.

I found myself getting more and more irritated at Victor's silence. I wanted to scream: "Say something, fer chrissake!" At that point I just wanted the movie to be over, but I kept watching, hoping he would have some kind of catharsis and open up. It never happened and he never opened up. BORING. Pass this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small town life centered round a sleezy diner.

I bought this dvd as I had just re-watched ' one night at McCool's' and thoroughly enjoyed Live Tyler's performance. I already knew her as does everybody else as a mature woman in the amazing part she plays in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy so thought I would like to watch a very early film and chose this one Yes she is very young but she really does show a natural instinct for acting. The main setting is a rather sleezy diner in a not very interesting town. The sort of town it would be nice to get away from. Debbie Harry plays the established waitress Dolores and Liv Tyler's character Callie joins her. In fact the first scene is her being interviewed for the job. The wardrobe bill must have been very little, there is absolutely no glamour but a very simple story very well told. And both these special actresses did get away and made very successful careers for themselves. Low key but rather charming.

A slow burn. But a good slow burn. A lonely middle aged man working in a diner befriends a new young waitress whose friendship makes him feel young and alive and eventually able to talk to women.
