The rapid spread of the Proto-Slavic language in the second half of the first millennium CE was long explained by the migration of its speakers out of their small primary habitat in all directions. Starting from the 1980s, alternative theories have been proposed that present language shift as the main scenario of the Slavic spread, emphasizing the presumed role of Slavic as the lingua franca of the Avar Khaganate. Both the migration and the language shift scenarios in their extreme forms suffer from factual and chronological inaccuracy. On the basis of some key facts about human population genetics (the relatively recent common ancestry of the East European populations), palaeoclimatology (the Late Antique Little Ice Age from 536 to around 660 CE), and historical epidemiology (the Justinianic Plague), we propose a scenario that includes a primary rapid demographic spread of the Slavs followed by population mixing and language shifts to and from Slavic in different regions of Europe. There was no single reason for the Slavic spread that would apply to the whole of the area that became Slavic-speaking. The northern West Slavic area, the East Slavic area, and the Avar sphere and South-Eastern Europe exhibit different kinds of spread: mainly migration to a sparsely populated area in the northwest, migration and language shift in the east, and a more complicated scenario in the southeast. The remarkable homogeneity of Slavic up to the jer shift is not attributable to a lingua-franca function over a great area, as is often surmised. It was a founder effect: Proto-Slavic was originally a small Baltic dialect with little internal variation, and it took time for the individual Slavic languages to develop in different directions.

Homza M. A few words about the identity of the Slavs, yesterday, today and tomorrow// Studia Slavica et Balcanica Petropolitana. № 1 (23). 2018. C. 3-41.
On the author`s page: https://www.academia.edu/37208919/A_FEW_WORDS_ABOUT_THE_IDENTITY_OF_THE_SLAVS_YESTERDAY_TODAY_AND_TOMORROW This paper brings together the considerations that for many years the author has gathered on the origin, identity and successful expansion of the Slavs throughout the world. The author notes that although the issue of post-Roman social self-identification has been discussed for several decades not only in Europe but also worldwide, a deeper understanding of the apparition and expansion of the Slavic identity has not yet been achieved. In the author’s opinion, the success of the Slavic identity was the result of the quality and attractiveness of the Slavic cultural memory, whose evolution shows three basic stages following the necessary starting point, i.e. the revolutionary decision taken by the military community at the Low and Middle Danube to adopt the name Slav. The first phase is the formation of their cultural memory, which just like that of other barbarian military communities (gentes) in the aftermath of the fall of the Roman Empire, was built on the literary (oral) transmission of the narrative that told the glorious deeds of the community and its elite (ruler, dynasty, retinue). The second and third stages of the development of the Slavic identity constitute the historically relatively short period of the Great Moravia, beginning and ending in the 9th century. On a political level, the increased attractiveness of the self-identification concept of the Slavic elites resulted in the vastest territorial expansion of the land of the Danubian Slavs during the reign of Svatopluk I and the formal constitution of the Slavic Kingdom, which was recognised by both, Rome and the Empire. On a cultural level, however, the success of the Moymirid dynasty was outperformed by the missionary work of St. Constantine the Philosopher and his brother St Methodius, who created the Slavic alphabet and the Slavonic liturgical language, translated the Sacred Scriptures, wrote some original literature works, etc. The author considers the Christian concept of self-identification, built on the identical wording of the word Logos, i.e. Slovo (Word) and Slovan (Slav)— which was developed by St. Constantine the Philosopher — to have become the nomen est omen of the past, the present and the future of the Slavs.

Institutional Research On " Values of Thai Undergraduate and Graduate Students: A Case Study of Assumption University ", 2005
A critical issue facing the modern day educators is the changing values and understanding of the values of the students under their tutorage. Based on the requirements of the national educational agenda, and that the basic tenet of education to be “learner-focused or student-centered”, the researchers posit that in order to develop the “learner-focused or student centered” teaching-learning mechanism, the teacher is well-advised to understand the values of the students. A better understanding of the underlying core values of the undergraduate students could possibly lead to a more fruitful and beneficial educational approach that is both student-centered and focused on the full development of the student. This paper is aimed at identifying the core values of the student using the Rokeach‟s (1967) two broad categories of terminal value and instrumental value. Komin‟s (1978) research based on Rokeach‟s 1967 and 1968 studies identified 20 terminal and 23 instrumental values for Thai people and 9 Thai national value clusters for Thai students in 2 separate studies of 1978 and 1991. Using Komin‟s (1978) framework, the study was replicated on the 2005 cohorts of undergraduate and graduate students of Assumption University. The objective was to identify the key Thai National Values, the terminal and instrumental values of the students, and to determine whether there are any differences in the 2 groups under study. These values were examined in 3 separate studies on undergraduate students in 9 faculties, graduate students of the business program, and the comparison of the undergraduate and graduate students in terms of the 20 terminal and 23 instrumental values for Thai people and 9 Thai national values. In Study 1, with the undergraduate students, the overall outcome differed from Komin‟s (1978) study. The descending ranking order of the 9 national values in this study was: interdependence orientation, fun – pleasure orientation, grateful relationship orientation, smooth interpersonal relationship orientation, achievement – task orientation, flexibility and adjustment orientation, education and competence orientation, ego orientation and religio – psychical orientation. On the comparison of the importance and the degree of practice of both the terminal and instrumental values, it was astounding to find that undergraduate students reported that the values were important but the degree of the actual practice of these values did not match the perceived importance. This could be construed that the undergraduate students have strong beliefs in the values but might not be practicing what they believed as important. Study 2 continued to explore graduate students‟ values by identifying their core values based on Rokeach‟s (1967 and 1968) two broad categories of terminal value and instrumental value. Komin‟s (1978) research identified 20 terminal and 23 instrumental values for Thai people and 9 clusters of Thai national values. These values were examined on 148 business graduate students. The overall outcome differed from Komin‟s 1978 and Teay and Tanchaisak‟s 2005 study. The descending ranking order of the 9 national values in this study was: religio – psychical orientation, ego orientation, fun – pleasure orientation, achievement – task orientation, education and competence orientation, smooth interpersonal relationship orientation, flexibility and adjustment orientation, grateful relationship orientation, and interdependence orientation. On the comparison of the perceived importance and the degree of practice of both values, it was astounding to find that graduate students reported that the values were important but the degree of the actual practice of these values did not match the perceived importance. This could be construed that the graduate students have strong beliefs in the values but might not be practicing what they believed as important.

RTO builds upon earlier cooperation in defence research and technology as set-up under the Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) and the Defence Research Group (DRG). AGARD and the DRG share common roots in that they were both established at the initiative of Dr Theodore von Kármán, a leading aerospace scientist, who early on recognised the importance of scientific support for the Allied Armed Forces. RTO is capitalising on these common roots in order to provide the Alliance and the NATO nations with a strong scientific and technological basis that will guarantee a solid base for the future.

Preamble T he 'Advancing Learning Outcomes for Transformational Change' (ALOT-Change) project seeks to increase efforts towards securing the future of 12-to 19-year-old boys and girls living in urban informal settlements by improving their learning outcomes, their rates of transition to secondary school, their leadership skills and their social behavior. To achieve these, the project is undertaking an after-school support and life skills mentorship program. The program will run until 2019 and will provide subsidies to pupils, expose parents to guidance and counseling, and provide boys and girls with opportunities that can enhance their leadership skills. Anticipated project outcomes include improved numeracy and literacy scores, improved knowledge in social behavior and leadership skills, improved retention in primary school, increased transition rates to secondary school and improved parental support and participation in child education.

A quality assurance (QA) process is proposed to prevent the possibility of legal issues for a multi-bridge retrofit project conducted by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to increase the horizontal shear resistance of decks. Providing a solution requires determining an appropriate number of samples with the corresponding sampling scheme to ensure 95% compliance with the specification requirements. The determination of the appropriate sample size must recognize the practical considerations of cost, time, statistical simulation results, and the binomial distribution theory. It is not uncommon for many agencies to base quality assurance on just three samples. Using a binomial distribution, a discussion is also presented why it is not appropriate to take this limited number of samples for quality assurance. With the selection of sample size for each bridge, a representative sampling scheme that is random and unbiased was developed using the concept of uniform design...

M.Tech. (Quality and Operations Management)Abstract: Construction is a huge, vibrant, and complex industry that portrays a significant role in the state’s economy. The roads, houses, workplaces, repairs and maintenances of our nation's physical infrastructure are made by construction workers and employees. Construction work includes working of new structures, which may contain exercises included with separating land available to be purchased as planning of destinations for new development. Development work likewise incorporates redesigns involving augmentations, modifications and fix of structures. However, today the construction industry is facing the environmental issues. These environmental challenges include a rising global scientific affirmation in human-influenced weather transformation, heavier rainfall which leads to overflowing in several places across the world, along with droughts and overheating in the summer that concerns building materials. Therefore, the construct...

The aim of this dissertation is, on the one hand, to show a path for enriching technological resources for less-resourced languages aligning already existing independent translations in the form of "quasi-parallel corpora". On the other, the exercise of building such a corpus points out hints for best practices when building corpora. This work covers all the steps, from digitizing the printed text to aligning Finnish and Basque translations to Standardizing the original Basque text, and finally, to automatically annotating it with Universal Dependencies. The work grows as the seminal forerunner of a possible larger project for aligning European non-Indo-European languages to both share resources and encourage contrastive crosslinguistic studies between these rarely compared languages.
