On this day
In 1497 Perkin Warbeck, who claimed to be Richard, Duke of York (Princes in the Tower), landed in Cornwall and gathered a 6,000-strong army. Captured and taken to the Tower of London, he was eventually executed on November 23, 1499; in 1812 French and Russian armies met at the Battle of Borodino, 75 miles west of Moscow. It was one of the bloodiest battles of the Napoleonic Wars, with more than 70,000 casualties; in 1986 Desmond Tutu became archbishop of Cape Town, two years after winning the Nobel peace prize for his opposition to South Africa’s apartheid regime; in 2009 the female journalist Lubna Hussein was sentenced to one month in jail for wearing trousers in public in violation of Sudan’s strict Islamic laws.
Nature notes
When the wind blew, it made the mugwort shimmer like silver. The tiny, reddish-brown flowers of this wonderfully scruffy perennial might be rather nondescript, but its showy leaves always catch the human eye. Green on the top and woolly-white beneath, they shine brightly, especially in a wind. Subtly aromatic, these leaves were once used to flavour beer, hence the plant’s name. Mugwort leaves had another use: to ward off the fairies. They’re still put to this purpose on the Isle of Man, a place rich in folklore. On Tynwald Day, the Manx people often wear a leaf of mugwort (also known as bollan bane) to ward off any harmful spirits.
