Hospital description

The Dunedin Hospital is a teaching hospital associated with the University of Otago, and is the largest hospital south of Christchurch, serving the population of Dunedin. There is a good opportunity to take posts as locums and the opportunity to get involved in theatre if doing a surgical elective. One attraction of Dunedin Hospital is the close working relationship which it shares with the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic for the provision of education and research; the Otago University has an international reputation in Health Sciences.

The hospital includes Intensive Care, Neo-Natal Intensive Care and Coronary Care Units, eight main operating and two day surgery theatres. Dunedin Hospital also operates a regional helicopter retrieval service and houses modern radiology services, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine and interventional radiology. Patients are transferred or sent to this tertiary level care hospital from smaller secondary care hospitals across Otago and Southland (such as Clyde, Queenstown, Oamaru, Gore and Invercargill). The hospital is operated by the Southern District Health Board (an entity formed by the amalgamation of the Otago District Health Board and Southland District Health Board).

The Ward Block building at Dunedin Hospital has a helipad on the roof of the northeast corner; the building was specifically designed with consideration for a helipad, and after substantial fundraising one was built on the roof. The helipad helps to improve patient care by reducing the need for ambulance transfers between a remote helipad and the hospital.

Previous students have described it as a relaxed atmosphere with well organised attachments. Dunedin is a big student town and is also the home of Southern Hemisphere’s Cadbury World, which has an actual chocolate waterfall.
