Spitball: The Literary Baseball Magazine is proud to announce that, beginning with the program for 2009 baseball books, the CASEY Award will be an authentic Louisville Slugger baseball bat; imprinted with a new CASEY Award logo specially designed by Donnie Pollard, Spitball's second Art Director and longtime cover artist. The winner of the CASEY Award will also have his name imprinted into the barrel of the CASEY Award bat. According to Editor Mike Shannon: "Our previous CASEY Award, the bronze plaques, served us well, but the mold for them wore out and we were beginning to lose the details on the plaques. We needed an alternative, and Louisville Slugger stepped up to the plate. Louisville Slugger is one of the most famous and respected names in baseball, and we could not be more pleased or more proud to be associated with them. The winner of the CASEY Award will now receive a specially designed and imprinted Louisville Slugger as his prize, and I am certain that any author lucky enough to win one will be absolutely thrilled with it." History of the CASEY AwardThe CASEY Award was inaugurated in 1983 by Mike Shannon and W.J. Harrison, the editors and co-founders of Spitball: The Literary Baseball Magazine, because up to that time there had never been any award specifically designated to honor the authors and publishers of outstanding baseball books.  Seven books were named as finalists for the first CASEY Award (Baseball’s Greatest Experiment, The Celebrant, Hoopla, Invisible Men, Insider’s Baseball, Take Me Out to the Ballpark, and Who’s on Third? The Chicago White Sox Story), and The Celebrant, a historical novel by Eric Rolfe Greenberg about Christy Mathewson and his biggest fan, was chosen as the winner. Another novel would not win the CASEY until 1997, when Thomas Dyja’s Play for a Kingdom (about baseball and the Civil War) beat out nine other finalists. In addition to these two novels, nine books of history, eight biographies, three first-hand seasonal accounts, two books of analysis, one book of photographs, one art book, and one children's art book have won the other 25 awarded CASEYs.The first CASEY Awards Banquet was held at Mick Noll’s Restaurant in Covington, Kentucky. Two years later the Banquet was moved down the street in Covington to the Carnegie Arts Center, which hosted the Banquet (under the generous auspices of director Arlene Gibeau) for the next 12 years. From 1997 onwards the CASEY Award Banquet has been held in various locations in the Cincinnati area. The original CASEY Award (given to the first two winners) was a three-dimensional statue that never went into production. It was replaced by a bronze plaque mounted on a wooden base that served as the Award through 2008. These CASEY Award plaques were manufactured by the Newman Brothers Company of Cincinnati and featured the original Spitball Napoleon Lajoie-holding-a-quill-pen logo, which was designed by the Magazine’s first art director, Blair Gibeau. In 2009 these bronze plaques were replaced as the CASEY Award by authentic Louisville Slugger baseball bats imprinted with a new CASEY Award logo specially designed by Spitball's second art director and longtime cover artist Donnie Pollard. Including the nominees for 2010, 270 books have been named as finalists for the CASEY Award. Some of the greatest names in baseball literature have won the CASEY Award, and CASEY Award Banquet attendees have been treated to many wonderful acceptance speeches over the years.
