MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS
January 16, 2015
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers declined 0.4 percent
in December after falling 0.3 percent in November. The index for all items less food and energy was
unchanged in December after rising 0.1 percent in November.

Compensation costs up 0.6 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from
September to December 2014. Over the year, compensation rose 2.2 percent, wages and
salaries up 2.1 percent, and benefits rose 2.6 percent.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 257,000 in January, and
the unemployment rate was little changed at 5.7 percent. Job gains
occurred in retail trade, construction, health care, financial
activities, and manufacturing.

The Producer Price Index for final demand fell 0.3 percent in December. Final demand prices
decreased 0.2 percent in November and advanced 0.2 percent in October. In December, the index
for final demand goods dropped 1.2 percent and prices for final demand services moved up 0.2
percent.

Productivity decreased 1.8 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the
fourth quarter of 2014; unit labor costs increased 2.7 percent (seasonally
adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 1.3 percent
and unit labor costs increased 0.2 percent.

Real average hourly earnings rose by 0.1 percent in December, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings decreased by 0.2 percent and the CPI-U decreased by 0.4 percent. Real average weekly earnings increased by 0.2 percent over the month.

The price index for U.S. imports fell 2.5 percent in December following a 1.8-percent
drop in November and a 1.4-percent decline in October. Each of the monthly decreases
was driven by lower fuel prices. U.S. export prices declined 1.2 percent in December.
